Nationalism (not expansionism) is a cultural survival strategy not hating. While sharp global economic disparity exists, the need for robust national barriers is more vital than ever. If there was less global economic disparity, national barriers would be as thin as gossamer, as there would be less need for them. Yet we are in a time when they are doing away with national barriers, when global disparity is almost at maximum. Sheer suicide. We should work towards less global disparity.
the worst thing about scotland (or maybe just glasgow) is that there is seemingly an above average amount of depressed looking people per capita. after that, its the people that walk around looking for people to be a dick towards. then the weather.
im comparing glasgow to dundee, crewe and london. those are the only other 3 cities ive been in.
very clear, well said. yea it is possible to appreciate things about the place you popped out into the world.. i enjoy following england in the footie tournaments, i like that we have an NHS and such.. but yea, when you start disliking the people of another place just cos they smell a bit different or whatever, you're into marmiteman territory lol
Don't see how it can be misinterpreted but on the other hand I have been on youtube long enough to know that every thing can. Regards and have a skilful time. Pinge
I had a bit of a discussion with you on the last nationalism video that you did, and I think the Fry quote on patriotism vs. nationalism expresses very succinctly what I was trying to get across, and that I kind of expected you to agree with but thought you weren't sure where I was coming from. I'm glad you've put this forward. Your videos are very well thought-out, intellectual and interesting.
Well...people from other countries are different to some extent, because of their cultural background. I'd rather say, that it's stupid to see people from other countries as inferior by default...that's the mindset I cannot stand.
@wonderpope Inferior's a better way of putting it than anything I said in the video I think, yeh. What I'm trying to get at is the idea that it's us and them when it would be much better if we all fell under the "us" category.
I feel that I have less in common with a Mancunian or a person from Slough than I do with a Scotsman, but I like the idea of friendly and jocular rivalry with people from other parts of the country, it's a bit of fun at the end of the day, something I like about our culture as a whole. I also probably feel that way because Scotland has nice hills and all that, whereas Slough and Manchester are vile and miserable craters upon this island.
@Orygyn Just a question, is there much regional division in accents in Scotland? I've never really noticed it, but I guess most people not from England wouldn't be able to notice the difference between a Bristol accent, for instance, and an Essex accent, is there much variation in the Scottish dialect?
@EviscerationK Not nearly as much as in England from what I've heard. As an example I can quite easily tell between a lot of English accents and certainly between Bristol and Essex.
@Orygyn I expect Scottish accents vary less than English ones over the same distances, but England is far more densely populated than Scotland. As a comparison, Yorkshire is about the same population as Scotland; Greater Manchester and Merseyside each are only a bit less, and the Home Counties together (with no great variation in accent) are almost 3 times the population of Scotland.
How many countries in Europe have those laws? I know Poland does because of some Metal Band getting in trouble for burning a Bible on stage or something.

From what I read they don't seem to be very well enforced though.
