I was only introduced to a handful of classics as a child so I am voraciously consuming them as an adult. Dickens' work makes me uncomfortable at times, but I recognize their relevance, even today. If you haven't read them yet, I recommend the audiobooks at librivox(dot)com.
@rolyemoly I can´t find the ones that are featured except for Little Dorrit - watch out for L D part 1. Otherwise I found Great Expectations and David Copperfield which I can both very much recommend!
A few weeks ago in my Western Civ class at the college I go to, the teacher brought up Charles Dickens, and I was the only person who knew who he was. Weep for humanity.
@WoundedWolfgirl that is....despicable. I will most definitely weep for humanity. I will weep for their grades as well. Everyone, a moment of silence for the people-who-don't-know-Charles-Dickens' grades...
@WoundedWolfgirl WHAAAAAAAAT? If you don't mind, what country is this? I know that most people in my classes wouldn't have read Dickens, but I thought that university-educated people would at least know who he was by name...? I'm sure that some students in my science classes, who grew up in non-Western high schools, wouldn't know him, but no one except you and in a humanities course? My parents were raised in Iran and they knew who Charles Dickens was. My father even read some of his novels.
@BENebuchadnezzar That's pretty awesome. Is it weird that I'm jealous of your great great great grandfather? Yeah, I think it is.
Don't you guys ever wish that you could go back in time for a short while, like a time-tourist, and have a look around? But I would want some kind of disease/accident immunity, cause there's no way I'd rely on 19th century medical care.
Help.me Interwebs! it seems very hard to find these videos on the PBS channel on you tube or pbs itself. I can only find Wee snippets, and only find whole episodes by perusing the "more from " and "related" links. Is there a listing of all the full episodes out there somewhere?
i know. i watched masterpiece for the first time, and thought it was great. i thought all the actors were superb. claire foy is just great. she just sucks you in when watching her act. i hope she really goes places. cant wait for season of the witch to come out next year.
Great piece of work! This eloquently shows why the Teutonic world is fragmented today! Because of the deprivation towards the masses in education & more, where all they knew & were taught was how to run a machine! Completely cocooned from the rest of the Teutonic World (their kin) these people never got the chance to know brotherhood with other Teutons & their place in the world in reference to everyone else! Half of them in the US 2day dont know about their identity!
You are wise to be excited. This is one of the best period dramas the BBC has done in a long time. And I am not normally a fan of costume dramas. Enjoy.
Oh, I am! and no one does it better than Masterpiece Theater! Bleak House, Tom Brown's School Days that whole series they did on Jane Austen are just a few of my favorites.
i got bleak house on dvd and i watched the entire thing in three days. it was amazing! and the jane austen season last year was completely amazing as well!
I just finshed watching the first part of Oliver Twist and It was what I hoped for and more. Loved it! Did you happen to see JANE EYRE? From Masterpiece. If you don't have that on dvd it is worth looking into. I can't wait to see part 2 of Oliver. Enjoy.
the only thing I hated about the Oliver Twist I caught last nite was that they weren't airing the part 2 right there and then. Noooo! I want more! (On another note, the soundtrack to it was really interesting).
