The number of socialists in the Berlusconi's party and Catholics in the left is very small and irrelevant. There is a clear division between right and left, even among voters. Those who vote for the right will not ever vote for the left and those who vote for the left will not ever vote for the right. The number of voters on the right is greater than that of the left and then usually the right win the elections.

Few? Frattini was a socialist. Prodi and Franceschini are christian democrats. Even the PDL defines itself as "reformist, liberal and socialist". I don´t think there is a traditional right and left in Italy, since you had a blocked democracy for 50 years where moderate right and left was inside the DC. The polarization is similar here in Spain: parties have their scandals but their voters are always the same. Faithfulness to parties is very high because they dislike each other.

In some regions, and in some cities, left voters are more than right voters, but nationally right voters are much more. In the last 100 years there have been few left-wing governments. Three, maybe 4, left-wing governments in 100 years. Berlusconi has won the last election and most probably win the next. Despite the polemics against Berlusconi, the Berlusconi's party (PDL) continues to be the party with most votes. PDL and Lega have together almost 50% of the votes.
