  • The problem that I'm hearing is that you generally do a good job with the right hand, but your left hand is often far from the notes that Tatum used, and most of the time, some of the differences are easily heard and relatively easily corrected. I might eventually try to post this song, and hope to do a fraction of as good a job as you did :P But still, you could be more faithful to the left hand.

  • I always come back to this video (and the Handful of Keys) . This is amazing, this is a jewel, thanks (again) for producing this. I am 59 years old and a piano learner and this is a source of inspiration: seeing a young person dedicated to this type of music. This video still does not have a million views (as I read from comments below) but at the pace I am seeing them it will get to the million soon

    :-)

  • what do u smoke to play this like tatum?.......how long do u spend playing techincal exercises?

  • Freaking incredible. I'm surprised this video isn't at over a million views yet. Posting to FB right now. Keep it up, man. More piano playing vids!!!

  • Some of you need to shut up because this guy is YOUNG to be playing Tatum.

  • You haven't finished it? Nice try, I have to admit it takes incredible talent before getting it right.

This is a big "F*ck you" to all the other pianists in youtube trying to play Maple Leaf Rag fast.

  • ohh. myyy. goshhh.

  • That was unllike anything i saw before.. im inspired.. Please give me some pointers!!

  • HOLY SHIT! SKILLZ

  • Very impressive! I've scored some of Tatum's piano music for wind instrument settings, and it's STILL hard to pull off. Any further Tatum arrangement plans? "Happy Feet" and "I Wish I Were Twins" seem like they would be up your alley if you've tackled his "Tiger Rag".

  • wow FUCK! I'm practising it as well but man I'll never play it as good as you do! awesome! this is really pretty damn close to art tatum :] dude!! I'm impressed 8-)

  • call the firemens, this guy's piano is on Fire.

  • awesome!!!

  • seriously, how....how.....how......really man!? YOU'RE NOT EVEN ON FIRE ANYMORE! YOU'RE MORE LIKE ON LIQUID MAGMA MAN! HOW THE HECK MAN! HOW THE HECK! JUST PURE AWESOMENESS!

  • simply incredible....great job

  • Once again blindfolded...

  • by the way: you are really amazing. this is some really difficult stuff. i bet you can play it even better now.

  • wow. now tell me kylan- whats harder to learn and play? handful of keys by fats waller or tatums tiger rag?

  • @kagstyle The Tiger Rag!! Handful of Keys is a bitch though...

  • Good for you! It was fascinating to see what it takes to actually takes to play this insane piece, since there is no video of Tatum himself playing it.

  • Man don't listen to these armchair critics. You've got skill and determination to even attempt Tatum, and from my 10 years of classical training, you're there from a technical standpoint. Just remember that Tatum's playing was never 'frozen', and each one counted as a stand-alone composition, just his playing it that one time becaue of his technical mastery. You've done incredibly well and you play asoundingly well. I hope you get rich from music!

  • Unbelievable!

  • The proof in the pooding you all. And Foundy boy is 'doing the pood'... Anyway why you criticise the boy, he's Foundring, he's gooood and he never said he was Art Tatum... you all too seriouss man!!

  • What piano is this?

  • Very very very good, my friend! :D

  • This is wonderful! Thanks for posting. Kudos to you for even trying to work on Tatum stuff like this. :) BTW - Good grief, what's with all the complainers & critics? :)

  • Hey man ignore these guys telling you it's not perfect. Music isn't about perfection. If one wants to hear perfection, he can flip to the video of Mr. Tatum playing it himself. Bottom line is this is a sick version and you are a wildly talented piano player.

  • everyone audacious enough to critique this brilliant performance is cloaking their juvenile jealousy with advice that is both undeserving, and for the sole purpose of making themselves feel better about their own inadequacies.

  • haha WOW. an Art Tatum solo..........NOOOT easy! this is VERY impressive! believe me, I understand the works that it takes to learn something this beastly and my friend, it's VERY obvious that you've put A LOT of work into this. PROPS! I'd rather Learn a Liszt transcendental Etude than THIS haha

  • Muy bueno!, admiro tu talento en ello, es increible que no se te vean fallos en las notas, pues en muchas ocasiones parecia que estabas muy tenso, pero aun asi, te dedico mis respetos y felicitaciones.

    Bravo

  • Amazing !! If you can get that close to that piece , Your own stuff is gonna be killer !!

  • Great work. The difficulty of this piece, the way Tatum played it, is almost incomprehensible. Did you transcribe this yourself? A labor of love - I think that the folks who criticize you on this performance don't fully appreciate the degree of difficulty here, in trying to recreate a piece played by a guy like Art Tatum, who is easily in the top five piano players to have lived in the 20th century.

    Again, good work.

  • Excellent.

    Let's hear TheRipper999 give it a shot.

  • OH MY GOD!

  • I wonder how Nathan Bello plays this?

  • Muy bueno!, jajaja, felicidades

  • Terrific!!

  • wow congrats

  • That piano needs some tuning!

  • Man, Klavier spielen kannste wirklich Gratulation

    Gruß Bert

  • You are very very good at playing the piano.

However, I will say that your arrangement assaulted my ears at points, (like around 2:14). At times you seem to be missing some notes, or it sounds like there should be notes being played but there are none. Also some of the parts when going up and down the scale are not even sounding at points. I also think the left hand is a bit too loud like guweck said.

  • At 1:13( i think) it kind of sounds a bit too jumbled, but if you were deliberately aiming for that, that then its fine.

    Still., impressive piano skill.

  • sorry not 1:13, it was at 1:19 that it seems jumbled.

  • You guys are both pretty much right. This performance is definitely flawed, but in my defense, you'd be hard pressed to find someone on youtube who gets closer to tatum's version. chris jordan does a great job, though.

2:14 is a mistake, but I can't reach the 10ths in the left that Tatum plays there (there are a few 10ths too big for me to reach, and that's a series of them).

And 1:19 is jumbled as well, another of many mistakes.

Thanks for giving me thoughtful constructive criticism though!

  • Hard pressed? You WON'T find anything closer! Bravo

  • Tickle them Ivories!

  • You're outstanding; nice arrangement.

  • I always thought it was impossible to redo..

  • Great great job! Way to go !

  • I always thought Art Tatums pieces were impossible to play. You had to practice for hours you said to play just one lol. I still can't believe you are playing it. Utterly amazing

It's funny. Tatum looks so non-chalante while playing it

  • You give me hope Mr. Foundring.

You're obviously incredibly talented and also eloquent and funny in your responses, and I wish you all the best; you truly deserve it.

I've listened to Tatum's 1933 recording of Tiger Rag for 30 years, and your version gave me goosebumps. I was rooting for you all the way through and when it was over, the hair on my arms stood up!

    Bravo my man, bravo!

  • You are a great pianist. I listened your playing for the first time, watching a video about Handful Of Keys. That video is also amazing.

If you allow me to suggest you something after watching this video, I find your left hand to loud sometimes. I hope I´m not to dared with my comment..

Thank you for posting so many great videos.

    Greetings from Argentina. Gus.

  • A kid like you playing stride like this? I think that alone is worth a million bucks. Everybody wants to be Thelonius Monk these days. Not that that's bad, it's just that Waller, Tatum, and the rest of those guys were so good!

  • Absolut outstanding performance, Thank you!!!!!!

  • Hi Foundring, just to let you know I have read many of the "comments" on your video clips and I think sometimes it's easier to ignore the nay-sayers than justify their comments with a response. Your clip has inspired me to learn Tiger Rag which I am half way through (and god it's HARD). So to add a bit of balance to the page, here's mine: I always liked your style of stride piano. If my rendition of Tiger Rag sounds this good I'll be more than satisfied - and I'm a classically trained pianist.

  • Nice job that was amazing i could never do that but some how Art still played it better he was calm

  • I never claimed to play it better or more relaxed, in fact I've already said how this is far from perfect.

Remember, Tatum was arguably the best pianist of the 20th c., and when I recorded this I was 21 & hadn't even *heard* of Art Tatum or this style of piano music 2 years earlier.

That being said, I appreciate your compliments, I'm just tired of people saying how Tatum is better, well duh!

This is maybe the hardest piece by the best pianist of the 20th c., I'll give it another try some day.

  • OMG gooooood job

  • Dang!

  • Hey is there any chance you could email me the sheet music you used for this?

    This was honestly amazing

  • nice, most people wouldnt even try to attempt this

  • seriously...you had me at "Handful of Keys", superb Tiger Rag... thank you for posting

  • holy crap...that was astounding. times like this i feel so garteful for the internet, otherwise i would never see a wonder such as this. that is a seriously intense 2 minutes 27!

  • You should consider coming to Peoria for the old time piano championship in May. If you played this, you would have a lot of contestants "sweating" with your version here.

This is an awesome job. Just attempting something like this is a feat in itself. Keep it up, and don't let the Naysayers discourage you. I think Art would be smiling at this..... Joe Mankowski

  • props =)

  • Wow Great playing! That looks like an old piano also. Great!!

  • Just amazing.

  • Great job!

  • teach me how!

  • Great job - you should check out chris jordan's version here on youtube -the guy is amazing!!!

  • Man I know you're gonna get alot of slack and comparisons to tatum..This is good though..Never heard anyone atleast try to play tiger rag.

You have to realize..tatum was a wonder from GOD..Only Oscar Peterson came close..

  • check out chrisjordan83 play tiger rag-his video is here on yt-sounds very similar to tatum!!!!

  • Oh no it doesnt!

  • Whatever-yet you call foundring God and Tatum resurrected. Don't get me wrong,Foundring is brilliant and very talented but to call him Tatum ressurrected is a severe overstatement. Personally, I find that Chris Jordan's version of tiger rag is much cleaner and plus he plays other Tatum pieces and Alkan beautifully.

  • Thank you--

Though I have to disagree with you--while I love Chris Jordan's playing, especially his Alkan and Tatum renditions, I have to disagree with you that his tiger rag is "much cleaner." We each have a different approach, and while my version here is far from perfect, he's just as sloppy in some areas with his, especially after the 2 minute mark, which is the most difficult part of the piece.

I feel like I nail it here, keeping the bass line flowing and the right hand in good time.

  • While I have much room to improve, and I hope to take another stab at this ferocious number someday, I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone else that can get this close (at least on youtube).

Tatum resurrected? As if! But I did record this when I was 21, so that's got to show for something...

  • I haven't kept count, but how old are you now(not to be rude or anything)

    Let me guess, 25?

  • I thought you were 23 when you recorded this!

  • Do you like Alkan? Have you played any of his stuff before?

  • I USED to call Foundring God because I haven't heard anyone play it before, but I don't anymore. Sure Foundring and Chris Jordan are really talented players, they don't come even close to the Master.

You need to REALLY listen and compare Art's version to Chris Jordan's version. He sounds nothing like Art. Chris puts random accents on certain notes while Tatum doesn't. That I don't call clean... The only clean is Art himself. Besides, Art plays the piece faster than Chris.

  • mad skillz!

  • What a cool looking piano!

  • whoaaa.. man you did a great work !! i ve seen nobody goes this far to play tatum.. bravo!

  • Amazing! Not my style, but very very very impressive! How long do you play the piano?

  • crazy super good, and theres no way i could expect it from ya but some of the super fast notes are just a slight bit off in timing it stays steady throughout, props man

  • NOW THAT IS SOME SERIOUS PLAYING! WOW

  • man!!! you are really good, serious I love it so much

  • Sad to say - I have never heard Tatum's version of this........but I like what you did with the piece:)

    Woohoo!

  • insane

  • FUCK YEAH

  • Wow, very very impressive! Keep up the great work!

  • Closest I've heard to Tatum's recordings. Well done!

  • KYLAN!, GO TO THE TOP OF THE CLASS. THAT WAY EXTRAORDINARY

    Best Regards

    GoGoshKa..K

  • Thanks foundring for this masterpiece

  • Dude you rock!

  • Wow you got pretty close to Art's song.

  • Waw! At first the video wouldn't load and I thought "someone playing Art Tatum's Tiger Rag? Impossible!", but now I finally saw the video and I'm stunned.

Only difference is that you try very hard and that Art Tatum probably played this with ease. ^^

But Art Tatum is god and you are good.

    Keep up the good work.

  • TUNE IT!

  • ehh alright i guess!!! kinda its still jazz... but you are playing the best

  • Hey Foundring,

I take it back about the awe inspiring striding on a 'handful of keys'..... this is the second piece of music I've listened to you play & this REALLY is awe inspiring/breathtaking!

Huge thank you, for putting this on ;-)

  • great job, man! this is just insane to play. reminds me of liszt stuff

  • Wow. Just wow. That is insane. You really have some chops. And all from memory too. Amazing. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

  • Excellent, man!

  • Sorry, I meant to say 'they haven't posted it on YouTube'.

  • You are right! Of course, I'm sure some professional pianists probably can play it with some degree of accuracy at a lower speed, but they just posted it on YouTube!

  • Pretty good job. Of course Art Tatum's is much better, but he was the greatest pianist of the 20th century probably. Keep it up! Most professional pianists fear playing this, so you are to be commended!

  • most? most pianists fear playing flight of the bumblebee for example...yet there are dozens and dozens of versions of pianists playing it up on youtube...as far as I know this is the only performance of the tatum tiger rag (in its entirety) on the internet. granted, this genre is largely forgotten by most musicians today, but still, I think the fact that I'm the only one to attempt this (albeit not perfectly) says something!

  • Go check out the other guy's performance of Art Tatum's Tiger Rag. He's plays it good too. Just type "Tiger Rag Art Tatum" in the search bar and you'll find that you are not the only one performing this piece on YouTube.

  • I love it how some people feel the need to sneak a remark like this in what is otherwise, praise - just to make themselves feel a little more comfortable about themselves.

  • I want to chill with you!!. Do you live in CT. I would like to play for you.

  • sorry, I'm on the other side of the country :)

  • Wow! Thanks for telling me, you must have an amazing teacher for helping you discover that. I can't wait until my fingers are long enough to try that technique in octives.

  • Yeah, it's actually really difficult, and something that only came easier to me once I started being able to handle 10ths. The same principle can be applied to the r.h. as well, to make the melody line as legato as possible, and although there might be "rules" that I don't know about, it's generally good to switch between the 4th and 5th finger between black and white keys, but it depends on the notes. It's just something you have to do a lot to get used to (like playing 10ths).

  • As for what "teacher" taught me it, I'm going to have say working solidly on Jelly Roll Morton over the last 9 months has been crucial to learning this particular skill, as many of his tunes are filled with flowing octaves at ridiculous speeds. Tatum and co. may be helping me learn ridiculous technique and showmanship, but Jelly Roll has been elemental in teaching me how to swing and really "rock out" on the keys :)

  • Very Nice!!!

  • you look at your fingers. received wizdom clearly states it knows nothing. tatum didn't but you do. but maybe being blind helped. look after those fingers.

  • Personally, I like Tatum's 1933 version the best. One question, how do you play the left hand octaves so fast at 1:38?

  • using the fingering "1-4, 1-5, 1-4, 1-5" etc when playing the octaves in the left hand really helps, though that's something I only learned how to do recently, as it's tough!

  • Fantastic! You have incredible talent! Keep it up!

  • how did Tatum play this thing drunk?

  • how did it play it with only limited sight in one eye for that matter??

  • Tatum's version when he was 22 years old I think I actually like better than the version he played when he was 30 (1940 version Foundring is playing here). Coordination is important, and a 22 year old has a better chance for a good stab at it then us old guys.

  • Hi Foundring.... This is quite an accomplishment as others have stated. Obviously a copy of Tatum's 1940 version. Just curious. Some measures are absolutely perfect => Better than Tatum's even. But then you seem to get nervous and lose the flow. Just a thought, but, try playing this after drinking a few Beers. Both Tatum and Waller were no strangers to Gin bottles, and I wonder if it might make the song 'go with the flow' more. What the hell, try it out! Did you get the sheetmu

  • i meant that in a good way

  • what the hell?

  • great tribute to the best

  • MA BA IECCATI!!!!!!

  • Shall I just sit here and enjoy or what? Beautiful. All though not perfect, it's incredible for a person of your age. *****

  • Very impressive

    awesome playing !

  • utubr has a great point. You should record it on a quality grand piano. It would be so much easier for you. Not that this is an easy to begin with. This piece is definitely worth a second try. P.S. Nice playing, you need media attention.

  • BTW, this piece played on an upright??? Don't know if even the master himself would be able to do it!

Honestly, someone get this guy a Bosendorfer with some neat light action. You sure deserve it!

  • BRAVO!

What a way to honor the master Tatum!

It is obvous that you are classically trained btw. Not that there's anything wrong with that

    :)

  • nice work man! better if u post a video playing this piece on constant speed

  • nice work friend, makes me wish i hadn't fucked my tendons and could tackle my tatum transcription book myself.

  • Well I get notes... and I have to say that you are fantactic :) Decimas in left hand - what a skill :-O When I finish absolving my last piano year, I'll start to learn this...

  • phenemenal

how long did this take you to learn?

  • Start is too fast and from 0:40 it slows down... not good :(

  • Right now, I'm trying to learn Tatum's Tea For Two... Damn, it's hard! I'm not learning the slow version(which you did), I'm learning the faster version.

  • ur my fucking hero. get fucked u poser

  • hey man, nice work. a pretty hard-core piece to attempt but you did it well. for those asking about the sheet music: the transcription of Tatum's first and arguably greatest version of "Tiger Rag" from 1933 is in the Hal Leonard book called THE ART TATUM COLLECTION. Google it. And good luck trying to play stride at about 350bpm in Ab.

Oh yeah, check out "Jubilee Stomp" by Wil Sargisson on here for some more fast stride piano.

  • there's no doubt about you mate , you have talent and will get better as you get older , they always do . btw ever heard of geoffrey tozer another fingers man of great improvisational talent . i arranged his first concert in budapest in about '86 . check him out in wikped .

do you ever have a crack at classical , webers 'perpetual motion ' wd be a great tatumesque effort

  • Amazing job on the tiger rag.Bold but great attempt. can u get me the score?

  • I love part form 1:47

  • good job

  • You need to film some music on a steinway =)

  • First things first, You really got it goin' on. Conceptually, and technically. I'm hearing classic, not classical. I've always appreciated this style. It's deep. So I must say.. I think there's a reasonable chance that the timing interpretations/nuances in several of your renditions will, in the long run allow you to personalize your versions, much in the spirit of the amazing mentor(s) which you have chosen.. and do an EXCELLENT JOB emulating. You raise the bar high.

    Thanks for your postings!

  • and lets not forget that this sort of stuff exceeds almost all classical piano music in difficulty, especially rhythmwise.. its right up there with Lizst, Alkan, Chopin etudes.. in the realm off the insanely difficult..

  • do you've got notes for this?!?

  • Best Attempt On You Tube, But Then Again Only Attempt On You Tube.(Pretty Brave) And Anyone Else Who Says They Can Do Better Should Prove It!

  • Guy looks like he's 20 or so. The same age at which other guys, in other arenas, die trying to surpass the brain/body/balls design limitation. Lived to tell. Well done.

  • Why Are You Telling Me?

  • i'm giving you an A for sound and an E for effort, i love the sound of your piano but the song is played very out of time, tatum always stayed in the pocket even at blazing tempos like this......

  • great octaves at 1:35. and great right hand repeated four-note figure way up near the end. this guy has an excellent technique and a superb charm. i love the last note. just a delight. i would like to hear him on a real grand piano in good shape. perhaps a really light action bright yamaha, but i would prefer to hear a steinway of course. bravo.i wonder about his classical training. we don't need any more classical pianists, but a guy like this playing stride on a beat up upright is just fine.

  • You are very talented but you must practise much more. You can be a very good performer.Go go go practise X))

  • Art is an alien from outer space.

  • wow that is so hard to play. Good job!

  • Wonderful! You are an incredibly talented player, and I'm sure this took a great deal of practice.

  • thank you for your kind words ggg.

Also, thank you for pointing out how pretty much no one can play this piece. On youtube, there exists hundreds of versions of hundreds of pianists of every single jazz and classical piece you can think of.

As far as I know, this is the only version that exists of someone attempting Tatum's Tiger Rag, if anyone knows of another version, please show me.

that being said, I acknowledged in the description that this wasn't perfect.

bk, let's see you do better.

  • You are welcome and my comments were well deserved. I've seen the sheet music for it and any one who really knows this piece should be impressed by what you did. It's even harder than it looks.

  • Great playing.I have never seen anyone attemting art tatums tiger rag.Anyway can u get me the score because it is such a great piece.

  • I can't imagine how anyone can have negative criticism regarding this valiant attempt at Tatum's Tiger Rag. How many people in the entire country can play this piece mistake-free? I would guess very few if any. Awesome job.

  • But why would you make sucha poor attempt at it if it is RUSHED and and way too fast. it needs to be slowed down if you cant play it. Al ot of it is unclear

  • Yes, there were mistakes and I agree that it needs to be improved upon. I guess I just wanted to give credit for what was done instead of a slam for what could have been done. I'm sure he's still practicing and hopefully, he'll upload another video with a better version sometime in the future.

  • First I see you know the music. So Why don't you just play it at a speed on the metronome which would make every note much more clearer??

  • i understand it s difficult but i listen and i don t like sorry is not really correct but congratulations for your technic very impressive
