I can't believe the number of morons pointing out that the fish was dead. What do you expect them to do, run off miles of film until he catches a fish? The film in those cameras only lasted about three minutes! They would spend more time changing films than filming. Obviously they waited until he caught one and then re-staged it for the camera. So what?
No showing of the end of the rod when the fish is hooked?! Dragging the fish around on the ground with the line?! No gill movement when it is only liphooked?!
the fish was probly dead already. when you real in a striper, its eyes are almost half closed. the eyes arent wide open unless its already dead. nice vid tho
@fleebus090 Thats actually not uncommon. I catch between 17 and 25 lbs with not to much trouble. The fall run at Montauk is the best. I usually catch and release, unless we feel like having striper for dinner and such. The thing is, even if you catch nothing, you'll have fun just casting out into the surf. Enjoy.
Great video. Surfcasting was obviously a much simpler endeavor back in the day. No van staal, custom rod, wet suit, dry top, or $300 waders. It was truely the every man's fishing. Once again, a great little slice of angling history. I could care less whether the possibly dead fish is or isn't a forty.

Very cool.
Surfcasting with a direct drive knucklebuster on a split bamboo broomstick.
Just being able to cast one is a feat.
As for the fish being dead, these were not the days of videotape and film was expensive.
That was status quo for outdoor films of that era.
Great post, Zarchy.

That bass was dead as a door nail when he reeled it in. Probably went to marinas and borrowed one for filming. Regardless, great video.
