Barnaby and Romper Room with Miss Barbara bring back such wonderful childhood memories. Life was SO much simpler back then. Thanks Barnaby for all the great shows!
In Cleveland in the 1960's, Barnaby was our Mr. Rogers. I can only hope today's kids have some public figures in there life like these guys who were fun, polite and gentle souls.
I remember Mr.Sheldon as Barnaby from when I was three or four.He hosted all kinds of cartoons during his time on Channel 3(1957-1968)and Channel 43(1969-1990).In 1979 I saw him live during a celebrity roast downtown.I still have his autograph,as well as Woodrows.(Clay Conroy was one of the guest speakers,as was Marty Sullivan).
The theme to Barnaby is Robert Farnon's arrangement of the French nursery rhyme 'A la Claire Fontaine'. You also might enjoy these similar tunes - Journey into Melody, In a Calm, Lake of the Woods, Prairie Sunset, and Lady Barbara plus some of his livelier tunes - Jumping Bean, Portrait of a Flirt, Manhattan Playboy and others.

Kinda of Neat, watching this, brings back memories to a 46 year ole man! LOL, great to see things such as this are floating around, to quote Steven Wright! "You can reminisce with people you don't know"! LOL!
@0pticalMagic thanks ! memories and sharing them ! is great ! i miss old childhood tv. barnaby,mr.jingAling, superhost and my favorite ! hoolihan & big chuck , big c & lil john !! nice memories for me too !!!
As a little boy, Barnaby was my best friend. When I was a Marine, stationed in Cleveland as recruiter, I shared the stage with him at a beauty pageant in Avon Lake. He was floored to have the Marine Sgt come up to him and tell him what he'd meant to me as a boy. I think he got a kick out of that.
Cleveland had so many great personalities like Clay Conroy (Woodrow the Woodsman), Ron Penfound (Captain Penny), Earl Keyes(Mr. Jingaling), and of course, Linn Sheldon (Barnaby), it's a shame those guys are no longer with us.
The only great ones that are still with us (as far as I know) are Bob "Hoolihan"Wells, Big Chuck Schodowski, Lil John Rinaldi, Marty Sullivan "Superhost" and Ray Stawiarski "Franz the Toymaker".
No, he was not a "drunk". He was freed from alcohol abuse in the early 70's, and went on to help others defeat the problem of being alcoholic. Please do not try to defame this wonderful man, because it won't work.
I don't know what's wrong with these people. I guess they are so miserable, they have to try to find fault with *everything* and *everyone*. All you have to do is look at "godsgifttoyoupeople"'s channel, and it says it all.
*sniff, sob weep sob* I remember Barnaby, grew up on him up in Ohio. In fact Linn Sheldon, who played Barnaby, died in 2006 and is still missed by countless Buckeyes. He did have several illnesses at the time this show was aired, so that was the major reason it ended. It's still a shame he's gone.
I will never forget how I felt when I 1st wandered upon this video, nearly half a year ago. I view it onc a day, almost daily, just to remind myself of how things once were. Innocent. Something that is gone, forever, in today's world. I am still hoping that someone will post the entire piece of music by Robert Farnon, here, so we can hear the Barnaby Theme and background music that always made me cry, and still does. No, I don't like to cry,but I don't want to forget this, ever.
I LOVED Barnaby. I used to believe it when he said I was the nicest person in the world..just me! I watched his show all the time. I was sick a lot as a child and I always wanted to watch barnaby when I was sick. thank you for posting this video. any more would be appriciated!
This sounds like what I was going to write. I remember my Mom making me soup and those little Oyster crackers, and laying on the couch watching Barnaby! I also felt like he was talking to me and only me when he said you are the nicest person in the world! Great Great memories!
I am correcting myself, because it turns out it was an Urban Legend that Captain Penny committed suicide! I have been searching online and found that he died of lung cancer! There is a nice write up about him in Wikipedia. So it turns out there have been NO SUICIDES to mar our childhood memories!
No, you are mistaken! Barnaby did not end his own life. You are thinking of Captain Penny; Ron Penfound, who did commit suicide. Linn Sheldon, Barnaby, led a full life, and died just a few years ago. He wrote his autobiography, "Barnaby and Me", in 1999 and I was able to meet him and get it signed by him. VERY sweet man!
YES, Griwhoolda; I did correct myself. It turned out that was an urban legend, and you are quite right that Captain Penny died of lung cancer. Thank You for mentioning it also; I hated the fact that we had suicide marring our childhood memories, and it turned out to be false.
Thank you so much for posting this. It brings back so many wonderful memories, and a few tears. My mother still ridicules me for crying at the theme, but I loved it! It's a shame kids today don't have his kind of gentleness in their lives.
I think we talked in another clip on Barnaby...I wish your mom ouldnt ridicule you for crying at the theme.Doesnt she realize that means you have a bug heart? Anyway, I wish I could find the theme. I have tried to find it to download it,but failed.Nothing by Robert Farnon available. If I should ever get it, I will let you know, and send you a copy.
Iwant to hear the entire piece, which I have never heard. Take care, and thanks for sharing. I feel the same way as you.
So do I, dlsms. You *have* to type in "Linn Sheldon" and read the Plain Dealer story on him. I'm a man, and I cried like a baby while reading parts of it. Of course, the theme was going thru my head at the time, too, which made it even more emotional. Everyone should get the Robert Farnon CD with the entire theme on it.
Could you tell me where I might find that CD with the theme?
Is it the original theme? The music that plays at the end always ripped my heart out. Whoever wrote that piece sure wrote some beautiful music. This was difficult to watch, as he choked up at the end. Thanks, conanconquer, for posting this.
Thank you so much. This has to be one of the saddest things I have ever seen in my entire life. He had such a big heart.
There is a nice write up in the Plain Dealer about him, and the theme, and how it touched so many people who watched it. This man had a horrible childhood, and gave up drinking in 1974, then helped others with the problem. I cried like a baby reading the story. I tried to post the link, but ?Youtube won't allow it.
The theme is part of this andit is the only place I have been able to find it. I found it on Amazon. Search Robert Farnon or "Captain Horatio Hornblower" in music. There is a sound clip at the bottom of the page.
Dear hellerc, Thank you ever so much. The clip you graciously mentioned, provided at Amazon, is the very part that always made me cry when I was little, so much so that my mom would turn the channel so I wouldn't hear it. I'm sitting here, like a blubbering idiot, crying again, after all these years. I don't know how Barnaby held it together so well as he was saying goodbye for the last time.
I am so happy to hear that someone else is as equally moved as I am by the theme music and by the clip of his final goodbye. He really did touch so many lives.
I am so thankful to you that you were so moved by the theme music that you shared it with everyone. Thanks to you, I now know where to get it, what the title is, who composed, etc. I never thought I would hear it again, nor come to know that it is available. Barnaby did touch so many lives, as you said. This clip is just hard to watch w/o tearing up yourself. I miss him so very much. Thanks, again for your help.
I was so very happy to see this video. I remember the last show so clearly. Barnaby was a huge part of my life growing up. I loved the theme song so much and was thrilled when I found a CD with it on it not too long ago. I wonder if kids today will have the same fond memories of what they see on TV.
Anyone remember Captain Kangaroo? How about Mr. Jingaling? Those were the days....Brings a smile to my face.
