The man was brilliant with the overall talent he had. His self created Stutter Step & locked knee Gazelle style moves are insane. One of the best things I love about him was his ability to stay disciplined, composed & professional i.e. not show off in the end zone or after a really good play. In fact, many times he'd give the ball to a lineman or even congrat the guy that tackled him. All coupled together, shows he had the "team" & "game" as priority in his bones & soul; it wasn't about "self".

I used to hate the Bears....But I'd watch every week just to watch him play. And the Bears were on EVERY week...and for quite a few years, it was because of him. He was awesome. God love ya Sweetness and restb in peace!
Walter could run. Walter could catch. Walter could block. Walter could throw. Walter could lead. I love Barry Sanders, but on the field, all he could do as run, perhaps better than anyone to ever play his position, but that's all he was.
Barry was a great runningback, Walter was a great football player.
And Walter didn't quit on the Bears like Barry did the Lions.
just to be in Walter's presence makes everyman question whether they are worthy or not of that honor. Just images of Walter make grown men cry tears of joy like
they are kids again. Chicago was blessed to have such a great ambassador of the Game. It was all just so beautiful. the world misses you Sweetness. The world needs more like you though we may not be that lucky again. RIP
I couldn't imagine a coach taken Payton out of the game in goal line situations, but the Lions took Barry out every time;maybe this is y Barry only has 99 career rushing tds. Also remember Barry Played indoors nine yimes every year(siverdome, minn)+one game in Tampa Bay,and a run and shoot offense.Payton had none of this,Barry was great untill you compare him to Payton.
Those who thinks that Barry Sanders was better than Walter Payton are not conducting a full assessment. Barry was a good runner, this video is proof that Walter was much better than Barry. Walter could have and did play quarterback, receiver, as well as Running Back. We're not talking about 15 yard HB passes either (2:31 to 2:53), nor was he good at just catching 4 yard screen catches (2:02 to 2:10).....or even.....oh just forget it !! Watch the whole vid and compare! Thx for posting LT!
@bdcroom1966 Barry was a better runner Walter better football player,Sanders was definetly better runner,But Walter could do it all,Walter best FOOTBALL player I ever saw...
@teddylawler I agree. Walter was just ridiculously good on the football field. The high character that he displayed off the field made him just that much better.
Having grown up during the 70's and 80's, I was very fortunate to see him play. I can only describe his tenacity, heart and never say die attitude with 1 word: Warrior!!!!
I grew up idolizing this man for what he did on the field. As I grew older I heard the stories of his unselfishness both on and off the field and I have tried to emulate him in this aspect as well. RIP Mr Payton, you are gone but never forgotten.
It was a blessing to get to watch Walter Payton play each week. Every Sunday was like a Holiday when you got to watch Walter Payton play. Your whole week revolved around watching Payton and the Bears. He was unique among players of his time or any other time. Simply the greatest running back I have ever watch play.
he was my roll model when I was growing up this video makes me want to go to walmart grab a football and just mow so idiots down. No body would understand caused I don't have a 34 jersey on. If you got to see him run your lucky you'll never see that just watch his last game you might understand a bit better God built himself a runningback emmitt didn't he have like a quarter million carries. he didn't break the record he achieved dorsett was better faster and stronger
For Bears fans Walter was the only ray of hope for many years. Always thought we had a chance because we saw him carry a team on his back for so many years, against defenses whose game plan was to stop HIM, knowing the Bears had no other weapons. We saw him week after week. SportsCenter wasn't around so rest of nation didn't see him like we did. Heart of a lion and the word quit was not in his vocabulary. No disrespect to Brown, Sanders or Smith, all great RB's but Chicago LOVES Walter. RIP
Walter Payton's work ethic and alone makes all these, any of the current (players) seem so weak and frail all the big hits now days are cheap shots. in 77 payton had the flu and put down 275 yards on the vikings and i'm sure the thought of sitting out never even came up. You will never see another player like him I was just luck enough to watch emmits weak gimme a break.....
@itsmybunny1 - actually emmitt played 2 more seasons and passed him by 1600 yards. Walters still better but I'm just sayin'. Also, Emmitt didn't pass Payton in yards from scrimmage until his last season and never passed him in receiving or all-puropose yds!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I dont really like how people say Walter ran with toughness and power while barry had to rely on speed. I mean Barry probably could outbench walter. He was known to be a strong guy, his ability to keep people off him is the reason why Barry was amazing to watch.
@ BaluPunjabDa I have to say Watler Payton was the greatest b/c he was more aggressive, he had a killer stiff arm, he wasn't afraid to lower that shoulder, HE THREW TD PASSES LIKE A QB, caught passes like a WR, and he did KR. He had more weapons in his arsenal than Barry Sanders. I love Barry Sanders as well. LOL FUCK ADRIEN PETERSON!!!!!!
born and raised in chicago and can honestly say Walter was not the best running back I ever saw, but the best damn football player ever,,,name it he could do it., block, pass, run, tackle, punt, kick, etc... THE BEST!!
I wish Mike Dikta coached the bears during Walters first ieght years. Everyone would know that Walter was the Greatest player and the best Running Back ever. 16,000 yards 500 receptions and get this 8 TD passes!
Yeah his mechanics and footwork look just like a QB. Tight spiral and pinpoint accuracy to boot. And look at the way he gets his hands out in front of himself and focuses on catching the ball before turning upfield to run with it. 1:50
A lot of WR's in the league could learn from that lesson. He was even a decent place kicker had they needed him to do it, but Butler never got hurt.
When you look at Payton's physical ability you question whether he was human. But when you look at his heart you know he was. I grew up watching him play and it made me love the sport.
and say that Barry Sanders is better than Walter Payton but you really cant say who is better because
Walter Payton and Barry Sanders have completely
different ways how they run because Walter Payton

this man could do it all ..pass, block, AND run.. that "deer" step of his...wow! my football coach always said "the key to football is keep the feet moving" if u watch..his NEVER stops!
Barry Sanders may have been able to be in comparison to Walter's running style, but Walter's passing abilities as a RB is unmatched even to this day. His catching ability is amazing as well. He gets 10's across the board. Barry just didn't have at the other talents that would make him the elite package of a player that Walter was. Check out 2:53, 0:43 to 1:04, and well....all the rest of this vid. Simply Grace and Punishment all in one. Relentlessly, Determined, Sweetness!!!!
Thank you bdcroom1966! I am tired of people saying Barry is the best ever when he doesn't even come close to the complete running back Walter was. Barry had the best moves i have ever seen and that's where it stops. Notice they always took Barry out of the game when it came to goal line O. Walter was never taken out, only for a rest. You forgot one more thing about Sweetness, His Blocking! No running back in history comes close.
All you need to do is look at 1:01, 1:52 and 3:41 to see why this guy is considered "the best RB ever". He did everything well, not just run. Look at the concentration on that catch, he's looking at the ball (not down field), hands out in front of him. Seems simple, but kids today don't do it. Look at the blocking and willingness to sacrifice his body on the other 2 clips. Then look at the touch on those passes! RB's shouldn't be able to do that.
dont forget Walter Payton was a CHICAGO BEAR!! Unfortuanately the Bears have shitty owners and could have had more winning seasons if it werent for them.
Great Vid!!! My six year old son plays RB and CB for his pee-wee league team and I showed him this video over and over again. My son displays similar determination.
