  • stop talking just show how to play

  • блеа как пиздит дахуя уф надАел и так все понятно..... без его унылого голоса.

  • it looks all so sloppy but it sounds sooooo goood

  • I don't really understand the shuffle part. It dosen't make sense how when you do a up stroke with all of the open strings and then when you come back down to hit the note. How do you mute the other strings?

  • i wish had another fret :( my 4th is HIS 5th

  • laura valo i aache re.....

  • Hi what guage strings are you using?

  • Thanks for the lesson I' ve been learning Stevie for years and there is always something to learn. The more I learn the more strings I break .

    Thanks Fast eddie

    edh1959

  • after hitting the D string on the second fret does it go back to the (1) on the A string 2nd fret? or straight to the open E flat string? i cant tell from the video

  • the intro was really easy :D

  • mean tone

  • @gr8bluesgtr I also think that the flatness of the notes kind of makes it more deep and dark, maybe thats why Alice In Chains also had alot of their songs in this kind of tuning too?

  • great teaching, really. I heard that on my mp3 player, thought: "mhm, can´t be that hard ( except the solos)" , got myself the guitar pro tab, played the intro, easy going, but then I was like "what the f***" as it comes to the rhythm pattern. your video helped me a lot... thanks

  • Hi Anthony, Ive got the first three lessons not to bad on Pride and joy, I was wondering if you have the rest of the song, if you do give lessons on the rest, how much?

  • You are an excellent teacher. Thanks!

  • Excellent lesson!!!!!

  • This technique is definately not easy to master, your average shredder is gonna bust his butt getting this down properly. I've long ago been able to play all the lead fills but the shuffle properly, uh uh. I've found it helpful to play just the shuffle along with the song then play it a while more without any notes. Just the shuffle itself until it sounds halfway decent and tight, then slowly add notes. When it starts to get sloppy go back to just the shuffle for a few.

  • I have been studying this technique since August 27, 1990. It is now 2010, and I see by the dynamics of your left hand that you have captured a fundamental nuance of Stevie's shuffle technique. BRAVO!

  • You're a really good teacher! Thanks so much.

  • what is the tuning, are they all tuned half a step down???

  • can you please send me some tabs of this?! i am trying to learn it and i havent found any realy accurate tabs. i got most of it down, but then i think my tabs just start going hay wire. please send me some tabs or a link to some accurate tabs.

  • I love you!

  • Seriously impressive! You are a rather descent teacher, all respect.

  • hey what string and fret is that little part on about 5:58 on??? thanks that would really help... :)

  • very nice vids, his stuff will scare the hell outa people seeing the tab to it, its allsome that you would take the time to really show indept how its done, thanks, stevie was a great loss to us all and could you imagine the stuff he would have made by now.

  • perfect lesson. this is how its done...

  • I cant mute the STRINGS on the downstroke!!!!! Its driving me crazy i must be doing something wrong.

  • Not to pimp my own lessons, but in about 2 weeks I'll be releasing an hour long lesson on StevieSnacks that breaks down the muting techniques needed for playing this style of music. :-) Downloads or DVD.

  • Hi Anthony

I stumbled across this by acceded and am very impressed with your technique. I have been trying to adopt this style using palm muting, and I just can get it to sound right.

Have you published your hour long lesson on this muting technique yet? I can t seem to find it on your website

  • Sure thing. It's not a free lesson though, it's one of the premium lessons in the "Essential Techniques Series"

  • @gr8bluesgtr Haha I think it's kinda your prerogative.

  • Dude i was trying to mute everything

Leaving the E open opened my eyes, sweet thnx

  • im totaly lost :|

  • Definitely not finding this easy lol

  • I just can't seem to get the muting right. Can anyone recommend anything to help me out with this, maybe something else to practice?

  • what i do when i mess up is practiceing the strokin mute all the strings and do that special stroke thing

  • For those having trouble with the muting, he goes over it in a lot of depth at slow speeds in lesson part 1

  • @ExadusX I learned how to do a palm scratch by practising "Night Moves" by Bob Seger. Fret the G with pinky on E string and ring finger on A string so you can change from G,C and F more easily. I use 9's and a 60 mm Dunlop pics and play it acoustically. It sounds better on some of my guitars than others and I have a tendency to break the low E or A strings, but I like the scratch..Hope that helps. BTW this guy is a great instructor, very helpful.

  • @Rainman270

I posted that comment 11 months ago.

I can play this song and Texas Flood very well now. ;)

  • @ExadusX well when you mute the strings you just put your fingers down (left hand) on the strings. Your fingers might not be able to reach the low E string so I just use my thumb for this (I put my thumb over the E string just enough to touch it). That's how I mute and it works pretty well when perfected.

  • @ExadusX It's a little late to respond to this - but i find playing Honky Tonk Woman in regular tuning helpful.

(in A) Or for something easier - Bad Moon Rising in D. Just the first two D chords to start - press and release the chord. You need to work your way up to this.

  • 5:21 D: I did that. Nice vid btw

  • good lesson. what makes this lesson good is he is not teaching it like he would if it where for brand new beginners. good job.

  • DUDE! thanks for the lesson!

  • what strings gauge do you use? O.O this sounds damn very good....

  • srv played 11 n 12s

  • your awsome defanentily worth subscribing! thanks so much!

  • You sir, are truly amazing!

  • what strings gauge do you use?

  • thank you so much man i completely understand the song now you are awesome keep rockin

  • hi there from argentina! thanks a lot for making me want to play my old ibanez s540 again, after several years. You're a grear teacher and wantching these videos is like to have SRV back to life explaining how to play his songs.

Do you know of any website where i can download mp3's with blues bases? thanks again for bringing my fingers back to happiness!

  • damn you! jk..now i owe my friend an appology..he said about that roll from the Gb to the G and i said no,thanx for the info..now i play it right

  • Thank you very much! you give good lessons.

  • AHH i cant do it i can do the chug a chug then i can do the open string then mute, but i can't put it together with the main notes

  • man u r very good , one of the most reliable and detailed lesson in youtube. 5 stars

  • im not understanding anyof this...makes me frustrated

  • now im getting it! ^_^

  • Thanks for the video (As well as all the others you've posted!) I was wondering, what gauge strings were you playing when you made this?

  • I am a beginner if ever there was one. I need some guidance dealing with muting the strings during this part. After each of the "main" notes are played, do you palm the rest of the strings with your index finger?

  • The strings are muted during the rake following each main note by resting your fingers on the strings without pressing them down as you pick all the strings with one stroke.

  • @gr8bluesgtr so... what you are saying is that on the upstring you are simply doing a mute with your left hand on the E A and D strings and doing striking all six strings upward, and then coming down on the bass note just after? that would make more sense, i was trying to just control my pick to hit GBE and then hit the bass.... needless to say it wasnt working out very well.

  • man your lessons are the best, it helped me al lot :D thanks

  • Thanks for the video. The muted upstrokes are tricky at first but your quality guidance helped greatly, thanks you keeping stevie rays music ALIVE!!!

  • Tricky.....that's an understatement :)

  • thanks for your great help its taking me a while as im a rock player but my hat goes off to you great playing !!!!

  • It takes everyone a while to get this, no shame in that.

  • that texas swing is tricky but i'm getting it...as soon as i get it right i'll post it and give you a heartfelt thank you your really a great teacher, thanks again for posting these wow!

  • I'd love to hear your progress. This is a very difficult thing to master, but yet so simple. Don't get discouraged, just keep on trying, and it will just click at some point and you'll be able to do it.

  • your totally right it clicked last night and i couldn't stop playin it,now i have to learn the solo!!!thanks again gr8!!!

  • dont you mean F flat? because wouldnt E flat be tuned up. im not reallt sure it could just be me. i've only been playin a couple months

  • If a guitar is tuned 1/2 step lower on each string, that means that for any fret, the note is 1/2 step lower than it would be for standard tuning. So if a guitar in the open position is in E, than a guitar tuned down 1/2 step will be in E flat. Hope that makes sense :)

  • ya thanks. the second i thought about what i had posted i realized what i had said. i jusr had a brain fart. and thanks for not being a jerk and calling me stupid!

  • If someone called me stupid every time I made a mistake in my lessons, well... first I'd delete their comments but then I'd feel pretty pissed, so I try not to do it to other people when they make a simple mistake. Nice people have more friends :)

  • hey can u giv me the tabs to this i cant seem to figure it out.

    thanx

  • i love this song and really wanted to learn it and i love stevie ray thanks

  • No problem.

  • OMG I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO PLAY THIS PART FOR LIKE THE PAST 3 MONTHS!!! i could never figure out how to do it but i seriously just got it in like 30 seconds

  • That's a lot faster than I taught it so you must have been fast forwarding :)

  • I have been trying to play this shuffle for 3 years without success. After watching this and practicing for the last 1/2 hour I'm 75% there! Thank You! The key seems to be the raising of the fingers way off the fretboard and then slamming them down. I've always watched SRV do it that way but it never clicked.

  • You got it! That's a huge part of the sound. Second only to the raking of the strings probably.

  • ok i have trouble on the hammor on to 3 and 4 with the shuffle it confuses me really bad can u help

  • can u plz make new videos where u show the strings?

    that was really confusing

u wuld tell us to strum somebthing and then u wuldnt show us

  • Hi there ,

I would love to help you out. Can you be a little more specific about parts of the video you didn't understand?

  • Well I didn't understand the up and down part when ur strumming more than 1 string

What I mean is you would TELL us what to strum.

But I learn differiently I have to see it.

  • ahhh the shuffle is gonna make my head explode!@!!! its so easy but so hard.

  • Hey man, stick with it. I can still remember the day when it "clicked" for me. Talk about a rush. It's like the light just went on and I could do it all of a sudden for some reason...

  • hey man your videos helped me out allot and i got that shuffle down now. now its time to work out the solos

  • what strings do you use?

  • For this lesson I believe it was GHS.

  • Man I love your Texas Flood slow blues solo lesson on your website!

  • Thank you :)

  • great lesson thanks a lot

when you repeat the main riff, do you play the low open Eb string again or do you go straight to the third fret. looks like you play rigth the Gb but i'm not quiet sure. thanks

  • I believe the part your referring to is right after the upstroke, I go right back to the third fret. You ar correct.

  • Thanks for the post, this lesson really helped me out. Keep up the good work! :)

  • lol thats just garbage and nobody wants to hear that haha...good lesson though helped me out a lot

  • lol

  • hey what do you mean by the roll on the 4th fret?

  • I think the part you're referring to is when I quickly play a note on the 4th fret on the low-e string after playing the note on the 3rd fret but before playing the next string.

  • omg im so confused! the tuneing is droped so the noted i think are differnt igot the first part and beging of second part

  • Yeah, if you're tuned to standard tuning this is going to be difficult. Tuning down 1/2 step will make learning this a lot easier.

  • dude im haveing so much trouble with the chunk a chunk stuff

  • Don't feel too bad about it, that's one of the hardest things about blues to get used to. You don't hear that type of rhythm in very many other types of music. But at some point it will just click and you'll be able to do it. I can still remember the day back in college when I "got it".

  • ummmm.......could you plz show me those notes just a little slower plz cause i couldnt see anything i cant even get the first not on this leson?????? so could you like show me it a little bit slower plz

  • Not trying to be an asshole or anything, but if you're not able to figure out this, maybe you're not at the level needed to play this song. You should try to practice some 12 bar blues basics before this. JustinSandercoe's lessons are pretty good. Again, sorry if I sound like an asshole, but this is a pretty hard song to learn right.

  • yea its hard but ive played like 9 12 bar blues basics i just cant seem to see them i think i have it...

  • great man. 12 bar blues is an important milestone in playing. Just keep at it and you'll figure things out.

  • Also wanted to mention that if you buy the higher quality quicktime version over at StevieSnacks (dot) com you can play it back in Slow Motion in the quicktime player :)

  • thats actually a lot harder than it looks!

  • Sure is. I was playing it wrong for 13 years before I made this lesson.

  • What string gauge are you using?

  • All details about my gear are over at StevieSnacks (dot) com

  • will you put the solo on here??it will be learned

  • Nice job. I understand the desire to be 'accurate,' but it would've been nice to do it in E so's the student didn't have to bother with tuning down to play along. Thanks for a great lesson.

  • If I saw your video lessons 1 day earlier, I wouldn't have bought the DVD on SRV licks, which is not as clear and organized as yours.

I am an amateur from Hong Kong, love Pride and Joys, and was always wondering how things work in this song. Now you have shown me loud and clear. Let's see if I have achieved your lession 1 target in 2 weeks time.

If you are making DVD and paid lession, let me know.

  • I've never seen one of those DVD's, but I'm glad you like my lessons. Keep watching the website ( steviesnacks dot com ) for updates on the dvds!

  • hey man wat is this tuned at please reply

  • Tune all strings down 1/2 step to Eflat.

  • thanks alot great vid by the way

  • hey i also got a question for ya.

do you know if stevie used a higher action along with his ultra-thick strings to make all that 'chucking' easier to do?

i've been playing for a while and it is hella hard to keep all the strings muted on the rhythm parts with my low action set-up. i'm gonna have to reeeaaally slow it down for this one.

  • You got it! His action was set really high for two reasons. One is the reason you mentioned. The other is because it it so much easier to bend strings when the strings are higher. It creates more of an angle between the string and your fingers, making it easier to bend.

  • i found it humorous when you called that ugly ringage 'garbage'. awesome lessons though. 5 stars!!

  • Ha! You read my mind. I was looking for instructions to this part of this song among your videos when I found them the other day, and now this one is up! The videos are really instructive, good work! This video really shed some light on things.
