The opening bars, and its recurring theme, might lead one to wonder whether Humperdinck, who composed his opera in 1891-92 might have been influenced by the Navy Hymn, "Eternal Father, Strong to Save," which original hymn was written by William Whiting of Winchester, England, in 1860. In any case, a lovely performance here.
I LOVE THE HORN SOLO!!!! LET"S GO HORNS! Oh yeah, I play the horn and looked this up because when I played it, it was gorgeous. And I guessed other better people would play it because i lost my recording.
oh, it was a youth opera production (i was 15 playing Gretel). We made the opera very colorful-storybook-like (and sung it in English) so that many little kids would enjoy it and start to gain an appreciation for opera. But with the long overture, kids would get angsty waiting to see the action. LOL, that's kids for ya haha! Also we only had a piano and a flute for the cukoo, so a piano playing such a gorgeous overture would feel dull. your performance here is beautiful!
We had to use a synthesizer for the cukoo (in the rehearsels before someone "organized" this we had to play it on the xylophone. Hm, I think I even liked it that way :P

It sounds really nice... but it also seems like it would get boring to play after a while.

DO you mean the projections?
Well, the director had a kind of modern approach to that opera ^^
I couldn't see much of it from my position ;)

thank you for posting! when i did Hansel and Gretel, we didn't play the whole overture :-(, so it was great to hear your excellent performance!

Oh, why didn't you play the whole ouverture?
We just cut some parts in the end (with the... er... "Lebkuchenkinder"-Choir (just don't have the english word at hand :P))

Too bad you can't see us Percussionists. Unfortunately, they didn't put up a camera on the other side of the stage as well
