Self-titled's my favorite too, and I have been a fan of Deftones for ages, so choosing which album I like the most from all their records is always tough. Self-titled is their most heavy record to date, SNW has their heaviest song though, Rats! Rats! Rats!.

I C your line of thinking, but tuning lower and using a 7-string are just closer 2 having 2 basses or a baritone. Energy and aggression make hard music. Not that i don't promote tuning all around. Its fun! Far as I know, the self-titled tuning is 1& 1/2 steps down standard w/ that low G# cause of the7-string. Kinda makes me unhappy b/c fans will have a hard time learning those song w/out a 7-string. (Except Battle-Axe, which can be played N about any normal tuning.)

I have to say self-titled is one of their most evil records then, it is those dark G#'s and F#'s that make me think that though. Adrenaline is what, EADGBE right? What makes ATF different aside from dropping the E to D, the feeling or as you said energy and aggression. I can agree with that. Still self-titled, It's pretty vicious shit, I think the band stated that was a very dark period for them while recording it, maybe that's what draws me to it the most.

I can get down w/ all that. My fav 'tones R like Linus, Adrenaline, ATF, and Self-Titled, The other albums were not my taste and i only liked a few songs off of em' ATF tuning is actually drop C#. Theres a gear video on YouTube where Stef says his tunings. However, theres an edit in the middle that skips self-titled 4 some reason.
