Bob Dylan did note in the liner notes to his first album released in 1962 by Columbia that Carl Perkins was one of his biggest influences. Dylan has performed Carl Perkins' classic "Matchbox" several times, including duets with Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins himself. Not many people know that Bob Dylan was heavily influenced by Carl Perkins and Sun Records, including Elvis Presley.
Ha...I can't believe it's been 15 years since I graduated from UIUC and I only just found out this song existed! Cool song- from the sound of it I wouldn't have guessed it was sung by Carl Perkins OR co-written by Bob Dylan. Pretty funky blues from an old school rockabilly dude!

You do realize that Altgled Hall, the Alma Mater, the Boneyard, that statue of Lincoln, the courthouse, Krannert, and the quad/Union are in Urbana, right? I understand that the two towns blend a lot, but they are not the same.
This proves what I'm always saying - you can find anything on YouTube! I'm amazed this is here though since it's a pretty obscure song. I have a copy of it somewhere on cassette tape.
Decades ago I had a copy of a Carl Perkins album that included this version of "Champaign Illinois". It listed writing credits as Bob Dylan and Carl Perkins.
The down home/nasty bar in campus town back then was the Wig Wam. Folks there claimed Dylan used to hang out at the Wig Wam a few years earlier. And of course Dylan came out with a tune entitled "Wig Wam", on Self Portrait, but it hardly confirms a C-U / Dylan connection, because it is an instrumental tune only.
I recorded this song in 1970. Live at Western Bowl. Just me on B-3 and voice and Rick Luckenbill (now deceased) on drums. A little less rock-a-billy than Carl. Click the blue type "keygordy" to go to my YouTube Channel. There's a link to my site under my picture on my channel. When you go there, you can hear my version by clicking in the ReverbNation gadget. Beware! Some of my other tunes might play if you don' leave quickly enough. Thanks for listening! Comments welcome!
Thanks for doing this, yes, it's a little Urbana and Champaign, but Champaign's my home town and we do have more than just corn! Love the song . . . didn't know it existed - great job!
The red(ish) building with the clock tower (County Court House) and the statue of Lincoln are in Urbana, as is the shot of the theatre (Krannert Center for the Performing Arts).

I love Carle Park - which is in Urbana. Great tune, good visuals - as long as you consider Urbana-Champaign one town
