  • Cool band.

  • Dude the brits have a lot of great music ex: Wire!

  • hell yes, thank you :)

  • awesome

  • * Bands in today's society were all pretty much influenced by all those bands I mentioned below. Sorry I don't have my on glasses ;)

  • Yeah, I think this band and Television came out before The Strokes. With all respect to The Strokes. I have much love for them as well but a lot bands in today's were influenced by Joy Division, Television, The Fall, Killing Joke, and Wire.

  • wiredman connected by wires..

  • I was kind of wondering why this was recommended on Pere Ubu's "Ubu Dance Party." Then I listed to it.

  • @benjaminkinkaidiris How can it be a Strokes rip off???????? It's from 1979!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @MsPluginbaby The kid who made that comment is a stroke, don't mind him.

  • This song describes my heart, after a couple of grams of coke.

  • That's good.

  • MegaKramden:

What do you mean "was"? They'll be playing in Portland, Oregon in ten days (April 12). I'll be there. Wire always is, never was.

  • Wire was one of those little know but super influential bands that no one seems to remeber . Many of my friends either don't know about wire or can't seem to place their music . It is strange how many great bands just slip for the public eye while others are credited with creating a whole scene .

  • greatness. lovely.

i keep waiting for the screeching to happen,so glad it dosen't.

"like her herpes"- sounds like, don't you just love British accents?

  • big black covered this song, huh did not know rthat, i am liking this too, tanx

  • Like a heartbeat, Like a heartbeat, Like a heartbeat, Like a heartbeat!!!

  • Like a hot peat

  • wow. nice. I'll be seeing Gang Of Four soon and Wire a few weeks later in Seattle. Should both be good shows.

  • Seeing them at King Tuts in Glasgow in Feb. Cant effing wait!!

  • wire, wire, wire, wire, great!! great!!! the armpit lover

  • I did like Big Blacks cover of this song.

  • the singer reminds me of thom yorke.

  • Chairs Missing is an awesome album.

  • que demonios

  • thank u for sharing I love this music

  • love forever

  • im still trying to figure out how 15 people disliked this video...

  • i thought that this was a big black song

  • wow tom yorke totally steals colin newman's style....

  • i bet this was one of tom yorks fav songs

  • Wire: un grand groupe!

  • tremenda banda

  • Holy crap!! I never realized that Big Black covered this! so weird to realize some of my fave songs of theirs are covers...

  • yeah, you are sublime!! and awfully cute too! :o)

  • David Byrne school!!

  • How good is this! One hell of a band!! I love Big Black and they have done this, but this knocks spots off em! Sorry Mr Albini!!! X

  • Wow....

  • slightly earlier than that though

  • Different Class !!

  • wow..such a meaningful performance..really miss that stuff

  • i can t stop watching this video.. first song i discover from this amazing group.

    Cheers,

  • saw em yesterday in italy ... last album sounds really aggressive live... still play tracks from Pink Flag :-)

  • I lookin for WIRE since 1979!!! THANK!!!

  • Am I the only one expecting him to break out into an Ian Curtis dance at 1:30?

  • @infancysguard No, me too!!!!! hehehehehe

  • @infancysguard Obviously, you aren't.

  • @infancysguard i was expecting it too

  • Well, he sort of does, doesn't he? More controlled, but still.

  • I just love this comment. I love it man. I love Ian Curtis. I love this song. I love you.

  • @Marty0Mcfly

    You made me chuckle.

  • @infancysguard no i always waited for it too !! lol

  • It was nice that Big Black did their cover of this, but they missed the drama and tension and went for bombast. As shown here, it should graduate from a whisper to a scream. Beautiful audio/visual quality too; far better than my wobbly old VHS bootleg...

  • I love Wire!

  • Big Black did a great cover of this.

  • god they made some great albums

  • Jiminy Willickers!!! thanks for posting this. Your login name appears to be quite fitting. Thanks!

  • this is in fact Wire/ pinkflag's "official" YouTube which is why there are only videos we own rights on here..

  • @wirehq doh!

  • Fantastic. The most ripped off band in British history.

Thanks for posting this, I was in exactly the right mood for it.

  • Pulchritudinous!!!

  • I have no idea why this is such a good song.

  • The drum beat acting as a heartbeat is beautiful.

  • big black completely botched this song

  • I was just thinking the same thing. I've had the Big Black "Rich Man's Eight Track Tape" album for quite a while. They didn't capture the feeling or intensity of this version. A lot of people will give you the thumbs down for saying something negative about anything Steve Albini has done, but I've listened to both versions with an open mind, and I agree with you. Big Black completely botched this song.

  • I'm a fan of both bands as well and I love both versions. Big Black simply amped up the tension that already drove the original to new heights. It's a bit overblown perhaps, but still excellent. Albini can't and doesn't even try to match Graham's icy delivery, but to my ears, he captures the feeling of the song just nicely. And I'm not just saying that cause he's Steve Albini :)

  • Apart from the fact that it isn't Graham singing...

  • @wirehq True dat. Point still remains tho ;)

  • Isn't it Colin (Newman)'s icy delivery, not Graham (Lewis)?

  • Great. Thanx to wirehq for posting!

  • joey brita likes it. i like it

  • Hay from Argentina

Wire is why eats such agreat world to be leafing in. It makes me wants to be depressed like Wire because eats good.

    Best climax since teenage wank.

    Bye from Argentina

  • best comment ever

Eggs pecked more in the few ture!

  • @andreaprodan quite possibly the best comment I've ever read on youtube.

  • @flea288

Eye ham lightly flushed! Too shy!!! Sank you my bosun pal.

  • @andreaprodan hahahahaha

  • @andreaprodan what the fuck are you talking about? Damnit, i'm replying to a two year old post.

  • WOW. "i'm sublime", that is one of the best things i've ever seen

  • one of the most astonishingly innovative bands in the imitative punk scene, huge inspiration to my Str8 Sounds projects, oh yeah!!!

  • I can hear the influence they had on Fugazi

  • serious winnage from all angles.

  • yeahh reminds me of U2 a bit, i saw them live last night; theyre really fucking old but the show was awesome! so in control such weird music yeahh

  • saw wire for my first time live last night at Lee's Palace (toronto) effin' brilliant and soo simple! they did the 15th!!!!

  • fucking cool!!!!!

  • 11 O'clock Tick Tock / Silver Lining intro kinda

    Edge was influenced

    Resembles later U2 song too

  • EPIC

  • LOL....now it sounds like a hobbit. Thanks man.

  • yeah I thought the same thing too when i first heard it. "Like a hobbit, like a hobbit..."

Its not like wire's lyrics make too much sense anyways.

  • ill watch them tonight in zagreb

    kewl bend :D

  • how was it ?! i wish i was there. you lucky bastard ! :P

  • see U in Zagreb NA RokajFest 2008. :):)

  • Can anyone help me find their song "Torch it"?

  • It sort of sounds like he's singing "like a hobbit", hehe.. I like Low's cover of this song.

  • thanks. you have now ruined this song forever. all i can hear is like a fucking hobbit now! ha ha ha. oh well.

  • ahahaha yea it does

  • Thats exactly what he does sing :D

(and there are more sortlike wordplays, honey)

    well done!

  • minimal and emotional

    I love this song

    I love this band

  • I love this! It feels good recognizing bands that seem long forgotten, especially in my little American town. Wire deserves the recognition. Post-punk revival for life!

  • wonderful song. i also like Big Black's cover, but the original is just a perfect song.

  • like a heartbeat

  • It's a very nice song.

  • Saw them four times-first time on the pink flag tour way back when....one of the greatest bands ever. They had a style all of their own , but born out of the punk movement in the UK. Which was typical of most decent bands in the late Seventies.

In turn they've influenced so many bands since..go and buy their old albums-especially 'Pink Flag' and 'Chairs Missing'.

Thanks for the clip...Now I feel old!

  • That song defines melodic climax.

  • In got my hand broken at a Wire gig in Bham in 1977. It was worth it,

  • this is one of the greatest songs ever made. my opinion.

  • its undoubtably post punk and not new wave.

    they are very different.

  • Up there with Clash and The Pistols.

  • Way better than them.

  • easy to say yet means nothing

  • holy crap this is not "new wave music"!! Do some research.

  • what do you think it is?

  • I feel they have a lot more artistic integrity than Duran Duran, Culture Club or a Flock of Seagulls(new wave)Wire were ahead of their time(and before new wave was even a term)and influenced many bands Blur, Minor threat, Henry Rollins and many more. I would call them more of an experimental rock band or perhaps post punk but not new wave which seems to trivial. No hard feelings thats just my opinion...

  • Calm down dear, it's only a song ;)

This track was most certainly released whilst New Wave was at it's peak and a lot of Wire songs can quite easily be pigeon-holed as being part of the movement.

Truth-be-told - Wire are not that easily pinned down.

Would calling it "art punk" be preferable?

  • It's called Post Punk.

  • Post punk, art punk, art rock, alternative, new wave: pretty much all the same thing depending on who says it is. If someone wishes to call Wire new wave, then so be it, if some wants to call Flock of Seagulls post punk, then it certainly is as well.

  • wire's most of the important punk/new wave bands.

  • God i luv this...

  • Man, this song is great!

  • This is a Wire song, covered by Big Black which was released on a 7" single.

  • I learned about these dudes through Talking Heads. They're not as quirky, but they're certainly intense.

  • you can hear the heart beating

  • They know it!

  • Very good!

  • love this song, the version by big black is cool too.

  • There was a Big Black version?

  • yea, it was a single, it was put on "songs about fucking" cd

  • wait, i was wrong; its not the songs about fucking cd, its "the rich man's 8-track tape"

  • Okay thanks, I'll keep that in mind.

  • Yep indeed. From memory it came with the Headache ep.

  • I like this but how does it relate itself to Joy Division? It seems a little more made up.

  • Where was the JD reference?

  • what are yu talking about joy dvision for

  • im trying to put up 12xu but it fucking keeps saying too long

  • this song seems so much longer than it actually is

  • Badass.

  • Oh Jesus.

  • Wire's 'Pink Flag' ranks along with 'Court of the Crimson King' and with Roxy Music's as the GREATEST DÉBUT ALBUM of all time. Or not?

  • the vocalist is jooles hollad at later with jooles

  • One of the most vanguardist bands from the post punk era!!!

  • cool new word, vanduardiast

  • Yes, cool, but "vanduardiast"......?

I don't know if you are trying to be ironic...but maybe the correct word is "avant garde", yes , that's right.

english isn't my natural languaje, is the same thing if you try to write in spanish or in timbukuduki....

But the music is Universal, and wire is one of my all time fave bands.

And well, anyway ........YOU UNDERSTAND ME.....RIGHT?

"vanduardiast", je,je,je,je , sorry I wanted to write LOL.....

  • no that was my typo. You are right Wire was badass at this stage in their career because the music is so simple, melodic, and dramatic

  • THATS RIGHT....

    CHEERS

  • Is the lead vocalist from the "Owner of a Lonely Heart" video?

  • awesome

  • poetic use of silence. that dont write em like this anymore.

  • genius.

  • awesome bass.

  • we need more and more material of this amazing band...somebodys have some?

  • I do jump around in the bisnis now for 20 years or more, never saw anything could competing with

  • I don't know who the hell he is, but, that was an awesome performance and great song! I loved it.

  • Colin: many thanks for posting this! It's still simply fantastic.

  • the drummeer.gotobed.looks like a ballet dancer

  • pink flag is one of the top dozen or so albums ever made. sounds as good now as ever. robert pollard always mentions them as one of his prime influences.

  • this is not on pink flag it is on missing chairs

  • I always thought ian curtis was basically just an epileptic colin newman

wire deserves far more credit then they are given, deffinetly one of the best bands of the 70's

  • lol

  • Does anyone remember what movie trailer this song was used in? I cant remember the movie but I remember there being one. Maybe some Larry Clark kinda movie?

  • postem mais videos do wire...tem muito pouco

  • great band from the post-punk era just like the chameleons uk, and the sound, the comsat angels amongst others, joy division etc, departmet s is fine as well...good music never to come back again...lets treasure it until we die brothers. I must admit though that I like interpol which is a rescent band.
