Wonderful. She virtually spanned my late mother's life who was such a wonderful singer ( found some recording recently), although not on the same scale. So sad that generation, dying off.
Kiri Te Kanawa said she felt in awe of Sutherland's talents after appearing on stage several times alongside her. As time passed, the New Zealand soprano said she "felt that I didn't deserve a place beside her at all." La Stupenda, RIP
I have no idea why this recording hasn't received wider accolade. I've adored it since the day it was issued. Except for James Morris' hopelessly tepid version of MacHeath, the entire performance is a string of jewels.
In complete agreement with domi2020 below: it is wonderful to hear my two most favourite sopranos of the last decades in a recording together and to appreciate how their voices complement each other in this score - crystal and amber!
I've no idea Kiri and Joan ever sang together! They hardly sang similar roles, Bel Canto and Mozart/Strauss, this is an absolutely wonderful recording!
Are there any more parts where they sing together in this opera?
Althoiugh they didn't sing "together", Kiri is Countess Ceprano on Joan's second Rigoletto, and a Gypsy Girl and Maid of Honour on Joan's studio Les Huguenots. The dialogue that these two do together is HYSTERICAL. Kiri is very prim and proper and Joan reads the lines like a raunchy hag.

@raigekimaru Such an admirable and humble attitude from Kiri, dont you think? I also admire her as a great singer and human being.

This opera is a hoot if you can get past the slurpy orchestrations. Angela Landsbury is great and Regina Resnik is is superb in a "old lady role."

The two most famous and vocally beautiful Divas south of the Equator- brilliant recording to have such great voices together!
