I'm not an expert, but logically just because there is technology available to counter carriers effectiveness doesn't not negate the viability of the carrier. Once SAM technology was developed did that make any aircraft without stealth technology obsolete? Maybe I'm missing the point but that is what this seems to be suggesting.
@pnachtwey haha yea ive been saying that all the time..Russia,India,China,UK,France and Italy have some from of carrier or another...yet those that dont have that real firepower or the so called experts say they are obsolete. x3time the size of a essex class carrier..none were sunk..Nimitz class carrier are huge with 11 major firewalls and over 2000 compartments and dozens of bulkheads..
This is all 100% pointless. China will never get into open war with the US and vice versa.
On the US's part, why start a fight with a country that is providing so much cheap labor and manufacturing capacity to American companies.
And on China's part, why start a fight with a country 1) whose debt comprises half of your national savings (don't shoot the guy who owes you money) and 2) whose companies and investment has fueled most of your economic growth for a couple of decades?
@JohnTaylor5675 Believe me, China doesn't want to have war against US unless US pushes China into corner for example like helping Taiwan to become an independent country by US force dropping bombs on Chinese soil, China will have no choice but have to fight back, that's the red line hope Americans understand that.
The primary use of carriers since the cold war is over being blackmailing nations that can only muster inferior military technology into compliance, these ships still may accomplish their mission, because there are still lots of countries with inferior mil. power that can be impressed by a carrier group showing up. To beat military junkyards like Iraq into submission, you just don't need carriers of the current size, and less carrier groups.
Good points all around. One has to wonder though, if the carrier is obsolete due to progress in Chinese missile technology, why are the Chinese spending money in rebuilding and operating their own aircraft carrier?
Carriers are outdated floating coffins. China and Russia are not Iraq or Afghan freedom fighters with bb guns. I would strongly suggest the U.S. military leave China and Russia alone for their own well being.
American r not that dumb for Taiwan, & also recognize Taiwan is part of China.
Beside, Chinese sub can easy taking out carrier, Remenber Chinese sub on topedo range with Kitty Hawk? Chinese prof that. at 32 knots, carrier is a sitting dock, only contractor promoted new carrier for money
In modern war, Carrierr is dead duck !! Chinese has 10 ways to taking out carrier, no matter is 1 or 11, american wake up !! Be humble & Talk out !
I would take control of the littoral areas of the Taiwan sea with high speed missile boats that have a displacement not greater than 500tons but have significant offensive and defensive capabilities when used in groups of five or six.
•I would use the carriers to support these ships in conjunction with Cruise missile subs (Ohio Class)
•Once the missile launch sites are knocked out the carriers can move in and provide cover and firepower for follow on operations.
Carriers do not float by itself alone. It is defended by destroyers traveling with it. Any missile approaching a carrier will be dealt with by the destroyers.
@N1cholas240 The DF21d is designed to counter SM-3, Aegis and submarines have surfaced beside US carreirs several times. It is not worth it for the US to risk its carriers for Taiwan.
See SSN-22 Moskit missile. Mach 2 cruise, nuke or conventional warhead. Goes evasive at approach. It is a million dollar missile which can sink a billion dollar ship. Admirals are scared shitless. And with good reason.
carriers will be around for a longtime beacause knowbody is even close to challenging us head to head ............maybe 50 yrs from CHINA will be able to
1 Hiroshima style bomb tipped anti ship missile and USA aircraft carrier becomes GHOST SHIP.

Cost of the Carrier Vs the cost of the missle (even if 10 missle are built per carrier) China wins!!!! The Chinesse always win at math guys lol.

If ASBM exists, there are only one question left.
How many ASBM could those destroyers intercept at the same time?
