why does it have to be so big? all it needs is a laptop with a webcam mounted on an RC, or an iphone held on hands. the robot portion is complete redundant. i believe iphone has apps for text recognition too.
@gnailownz You are right, it doesn't have to. A webcam plus a computer or even a phone can do. But the great part of the project is that it's on the ROS platform so that any hardware running ROS can equally perform the same task, for example even android phones. So it's an integrated system demonstrating what robot is capable of nowadays, using PR2 as a media. iphone has text recognition apps but not text detection part as far as I'm concerned and actually the latter problem is much harder.
Here's an idea: Instead of repeating what he reads, he should wirelessly search for text that occurs often with what he's reading, so it seems like he's coming up with novel things to say. This is the beginning of robot reading comprehension.
@Mangalaiii Yeah, this is a great idea, it would be nice we can have internet as the knowledge base for robots to understand the world. And actually ROS already have cloud computing capacity, check out cloud robotics talk at this year's google I/O
