Much of what this priest says is logical and correct, I think that he is speaking from a purely American perspective. He recognizes that the state wrongly encroaches on religion but he seems incapable of imagining a situation where the reverse is true. In Ireland the Catholic church has complete control of state education and continues to exercise power normally reserved for the state. True morality should not be based on religion but on conscience; child sex abuse scandals prove this.

You have it all exactly correct, Father. I am surprised at your frankness. Most priests won't touch the subject of Church and State. If they do it is handled in a most indirect way.
