  • If this song doesn't give you goosebumps then you have no soul.

  • God forbid that we should present ourselves less than human Castra... did you finish listening to the rest of his intro?

  • Impresionante!

  • Anybody know the source for this clip?

  • @OigaVault this is from the Live at Fillmore DVD that came as an extra with the Want Two CD

  • Wish he'd kick his effin' Judy obsession... The guy is a genius...

  • I absolutely *adore* this song! Apparently it was written during or after a moment of crisis in Rufus´ life, which just goes to show how potentially creative breakdowns and crises can be. ;-D I used to listen to this almost every night a few years ago.

  • Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it.

  • What I really think is funny, is that everyone comments about his gayness affecting his music: good or bad; when he's written maybe I don't know how many, maybe 10? Songs even involving other men or homosexuality.

But wouldn't someone agree that what he mainly wrights - sings about, is his family or personal things? I dunno, I'm just saying what I think :)

  • A straight guy's hero...

  • This burnt hippie is GA-FAWED....well done dude. Love the first WANT album like my Beatles, Phish and Dead..:)

  • Pure and simple, this song is a masterpiece!!

  • Check out: "ROBI HAGER GO OR GO AHEAD" on youtube!!

It is from a concert I did in NYC!

I hope to sing with him some day, hope you like!

  • his voice singin' live is amazing!!!!

  • I discovered Rufus through YouTube by chance 10 days ago, got so impressed with his music and I'm going to see him in concert in 12 days :-) He is amazing artist! I can simply say BRAVO! I wish world could have more people like him.

  • I love his music! I don't give a fuck if he's gay. Gayness/straitness doesn't matter to ho great the music is. Rufus Wainwright is inspiring. He inspired my cousin and now he writes beautiful music, Who ever have a problem with rufus proves that they can't grow up, sorry that the world isn't what you wanted it to be, but too fucking bad, if it was the way you wanted to be, we will never have music as beautiful, inspiring, awesome as this! <3 Love rufus

  • what a song!!!...

  • I am proud to say that I have gone to one of his concerts.

    He's simply amazing.

  • i'll never know what you've shown to other eyes...

  • My hero

  • Straight men don't write music this rapturous & heartfelt -- so if anyone is thinking that RW is OK in spite of being gay because he redeems himself by being a good entertainer, one must realizedthat this guy does this gorgeous music at least partly Because he is gay, not in spite of it. And then one can think that there are lovely & unique things that gay people add to the world - as for religion, God created a huge variety of creactures because He loves variety - so go with the flow, folks -

  • @SupernalOne I started to write a response to this poster saying oh, yes, my brother really agrees with this point of view and thought after hearing him that R's sensibilities were tremendous and greater than many straight men... then I realized that YOU are my brother!!! So, well said, bro. :-)

  • @SupernalOne

Not all of us, I write sentimental stuff all the time. Although I am considered 'gay' by my peers...

  • @SupernalOne "Straight men don't write music this rapturous & heartfelt "

try the BEATLES, or the song "rapture" by Hurt

watch stupid blanket statements, otherwise you're right, the fact that he's gay probably adds something to his music. But seriously he would write great music if he wasn't gay.

  • @dirtydupe

OK, fair enough - I was just exaggerating to make a point, which is always a fatal flaw in making any assertion -

  • Very very emotional song for anyone that can relate to it. Love the lyrics and the emotional roller coaster that this song takes you on.

  • what about the ones who are crying?.... omg!!

  • Hermoso! adoro esa cancion! go or go ahead... and surprise me (l)

  • Cerrad los ojos y disfrutad.

  • this is my first song ive heard of his... apparently he's good friends with my circle. Justin bond, Cameron Michell and my friend Tex... small world. im in awe actually. the honesty made this magic and brought it close to home in every way. my ex is a junkie and tried to bring me down. he didnt win ;) gay, str8, bi, trans or les? we are all one. we all hurt the same, bleed the same, cry, screw and all that humans do. i respect you if you respect me. lets play four square together and eat a taco.

  • the guy is a genius

  • The binge was good the aftermath was horrible......what comes first the chicken or the egg?.....I love his music , so much emotion , honesty and filth , i love it when any artsist in any form of art rips it all open and starts again. TR

  • People are not omo- bi- trans- etc... they're just sexual beings. Stop and listen!

  • Listen to Harry Nillsson and you will find one of his main muses. Harry was a best friend to John Lennon as Rufus is friends with Sean Lennon (whom I've met and know briefly). In fact, Sean is one of the 'prodigal sons' he sons about in "Cigarettes & Chocalte Milk". He had room to grow with the parents he had both artists and money to experience all there was. He is beautiful in heart and music and hopefully will endure to become the Pop Icon he should be listed as instead of Critic Choice only.

  • He can sing, and I do like a few of his songs, but I've gotta say, my one gripe with him is that fucking lisp.

  • This is my favorite all time Rufus song. It makes me cry at times and will ondoubtably continue to give me the chills everytime I listen to it. Thank you rufus for this beautiful piece of music.- Keith

  • Phenomenal, what a beautiful song and superb live performance, simply not enough superlatives to use!

  • REACT

    Pen is position opinion (RANK)

  • Epic live performance of a stunning song. Step aside pointless mass manufactured pop rap crap, this is music.

  • they are cheering because they are are celebrating rufus turning that horrible multi day binge experience, into a beautiful piece of art, through his genius and resilience. i have no issue with the audience cheering. i do however have issues with people thinking theirs is the only way of interpreting art. :)

  • Rufus is one of those few artists who can bring a range of generations to fall in love with him and his work. This song gives me goosebumps everytime -Thank you Rufus!

  • Une de mes chansons préférées de Rufus! Merci de Montréal!

  • What HAS happened to love? ....

  • @singray7 "What HAS happened to love?"

    Check under the couch cushions.

  • Just adore this song!

  • What i love about Rufus is that he never apologises or regrets his previous actions he takes them as experience and inspiration. Fantastic talent - fantastic strength of mind.

His best is yet to come I feel but it will be difficult to top this song...

  • All the young dudes....Beautiful is what you are Rufus. x

  • Fantastic artist, great composition and performance of course. I cannot believe the idiots in this audience actually cheering, hooting and clapping after Rufus mentioned a "horrible" multi-day Crystal Meth binge he experienced when he was using! DAMN, some people will cheer on anything including miserable, destructive, possibly-fatal behaviours! : [

  • These are the same tards that cheer every time a singer swears.

  • @gummybrain -- I agree, cannot stand such ignorant and annoying individuals when at shows! Thanks for the back-up. : )

  • Here in Puerto RIco, only one in every 13,000 know about Rufus... but if I win the lottery I would pay any amount to have him perform for me here!!!

  • @WinterWineStudio I live in Brazil, man...and i know exactly what you mean...for dure.

  • @WinterWineStudio *for SURE!

  • I wanna know why this number isn't on my Live at the Fillmore dvd :(

  • Oh Pepe,

    It's like being ripped off.

    Good thing this was posted.

  • My favourite song...ever? Not sure, but one of the most beautiful, uplifting songs I´ve ever heard. There´s something very spiritual about it, but maybe that´s just the way I interpret the lyrics (and the soaring refrain). Thanks, Rufus!

  • astonishing

  • I hope radiohead has not seen this song, they will have sleepless nights...

  • @grashoppert8

I´m a radiohead fan...one of the biggest...and rufus? ohmfg...I LOVE him...and the reason I´m doing this posting is that i really can see the link between Rufus and radiohead, even knowing they are from diferent music worlds. but, of course, from the same "outstanding music world"....yes, they are...at least inside my head/heart.

  • I do so hope he will be visiting the Netherlands or Belgium in the near future. Hope some much to see him live. This song is so astonishing, and not even his best. Currenty, Want if my favorite Rufus song, but this tends to change.

  • My life in a song: this...

  • Possibly my all time favourite song, has got me thourgh some good and bad times!

Thank you for this bitter knowledge!

  • Just saw the BBC documentary on "Prima Donna", and guess what ? Half of you know it already but...

Rufus is currently recording his very new and very own written album !!! He says it's gonna be a solo/piano record with newly written songs.

So hopefully "The art teacher's" family becomes bigger very soon !

SO curious on this new chapter after "Release the stars" !

  • And Live at Milwaukee is out in a few days :)

  • Easily his best song. Brilliant, heartbreaking, perfect.

  • And he performed his best song brilliantly, heartbreakingly, perfectly.

  • one of the best songs ever written..genius..

  • Could this song be any more perfect? I don't think it could.

  • The song (and the arrangement) leaves me speechless. It is perfect and heartbreaking and somber and celebratory all at once. If there were a Pulitzer Prize for songs, this would have won it.

  • WOW

  • my favourite song of his

  • I just love this song

  • An absolutely wonderful song! Rufus is so talented. A performance by him is always unforgettable.

  • Montréal est fière de Rufus, son fils! Cette chanson m'a toujours transporté dans un monde meilleur, merci Rufus!

  • Gay , straight, bisexual, whatever....time to grow up people this guy writes and sings some of the greatest songs ever written!!!!

  • @neil1963creed didnt think sexualty had anything to do with music or the love for music but that was your point right? lol. anyway your totally 100% right , rufus has wrote some of the most magical heaven sent music i have ever had the pleasure of listening to....this is one of my fave songs off want double album....what an honest genius....i love it when artists spill the beans. lol

  • @tabulaerasae82 my point exactly my friend. People should just forget the stupid prejudices, close their eyes and listen to the music and if they're not moved beyond description by what they hear and don't recognise genuine talent.......well then they have my deepest sympathies lol!

  • @neil1963creed well said m8

  • @neil1963creed hit the nail right on the head bro. he's a genius, he's a big gay genius but he's a genius none the less

  • @neil1963creed

    Totally Agree

  • @neil1963creed very good comment!!!

  • @neil1963creed

Rufus is amazing! In concert, he's 100% quality. A lover, a poet, a rock musician. I agree that he's one of the best songwriters living.

  • masterpiece!

  • Absolutely.

  • Un souvenir mémorable... pour une période noire!!!

  • "Say you've led the way to a mirage..."

That song never fails to raise goosebumps.

  • Il y a des mots dans toutes les langues, il y a des adjectifs dans chacunes d'entre elles, mais quant il chante "Go or go ahead", c'est juste bouleversant.

  • IN the same year i went to a Madonna concert costing £175 and then a Rufus concert at £25 and guess what one was better?

It was the Rufus concert and all he did was sit at his piano and play his guitar i was in a trance , i was so bored at the madonna concert i got pissed anfd forgot she was on stage , Madonna is still a great artist but Rufus is by far the best, infact i cant find any words to describe how good he is! xxx

  • I love him.... so amazing.

  • Terrific Rufus! I Love this Guy!

  • i only recently heard of rufus from my car sattelite radio, and he's coming in april to my hometown movie theatre in Ma. Can't wait...!

  • if i had to listen to only one song for the rest of my life, this could very well be it.

  • your not alone

  • Rufus is one of the most talented artists I can think of. Live music is so often a dissappointement. It is rare that a performer sounds this great live. WTG Rufus. Now sing us some new stuff!

  • love<3

  • could somebody please write down what he says in the beginning? like how this song came to him...thank you!

  • this song came to me during a 3 day crystal meth binge in San Francisco - i say this because if you've got a problem you have to get help, cause it'll kick your ass every time. something along those lines

  • rufus is just amazing...ive never been so grabbed by a performer of this caliber since i first heard bowie in 1970

  • that is class.

  • beautiful!

  • OMG!! This song is nirvana! Rufus rules!!!

  • i fucking kicked a habit a bad habit all alone.....my fucking cousin got me addicted...I am 4 years clean...I wish no one ever has to go through what i did...

  • if you need help, seek it, cz it'll eat your ass every time

  • In my opinion, his best song. Strong voice supporting equally emotional lyrical content. This and 14th Street are the stars of Want One.

  • with so many people posting their intimate experiences with this song what can i say... except, that if the Left can be united in one songk, one voice, one man who epitomizes a truly unconditional expression of love for life despite its strange cruelties, it is this person.

  • Wow !!!!!!!!!! I have nothing else to say.. wow!

  • I love this song so much and was worried that it might not work live. But i was wrong. It's so much more destabilized and destructive-sounding, and it's so powerful but in a different way from the studio version, which is a lot cleaner. This version really highlights the destructive side of the song, and I must say I am blown away.

  • agreed

  • WOW! Great tune. Thanks!

  • Rufus is brilliant!!

  • Hooray for Crystal Meth! WOOO!....uh I mean Hooray for getting help! YAY!

  • first time i hear this song. great songs!!! just what i would axpect from rufus.

  • one of the best songs ever.

  • This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard in my life. I can barely listen to it without crying. It's really a sad song if you listen. But I adore Rufus anyway so I suppose I am partial. I also love "Barcelona" and his version of "Agnus Dei" Ahhhh Rufus we love you!!

  • I love how it goes from beautiful love song . . . to epic ballad , and both parts still amazing , GENIUS .

  • Replaces Slideshow as my favorite R. Wainwright song. Absolute genius.

  • One of Rufus' most brilliant achievements. What a legendary man he is...

  • The key phrase is "what has happened to love". It's about man's inhumanity to man, and the anguish of incivility. Man.. it really hits home.

  • i dig it how he rocks this song. i wish he'd do more of the rock sound. very dramatic and beautiful!

  • What is the REALLY about?

I don't understand... but a guy I like is listening to it a lot, what's it about??

  • Well you have to ask Rufus that ;)

But I thinks he sings about the drugs ( crystal meth ) As he says so himself.

Being so addicted that he feels abandoned and stranded... all alone.

But from my point off view, its about love.

Well more about heartache, all the downside of love. But thats my interpretation about this song when I hear it.

For me it's a very powerfull emotional song.

But there are more songs from him that can touch me very deeply. He is just amazing !

  • I think it's about excess . . . and then the shitty after affects . . . And also about his friends . . . " Guardian Angels who left me stranded " . They let him get into the mess of his addiction without helping , or knowing he / they had a problem .

  • Classic!

  • this is my absolute favorite song of all time.

  • this brings tears to my eye's.

    Amazing, I love it !

  • love him

  • brilliant song!!

  • I agree dermot ha ha

  • Never heard that song before in my life, and now I love it. ♥♥

  • This is so beautiful.

I would cry if I see this live.

  • I have loved Rufus since he came out with his fist cd.

  • I love him too and I'm a 56 year old woman! You just can't help it can you, that face, that voice.

  • I can't help it, I simply LOVE this man!!!

    ps: I'm a girl :\ oh well

  • I saw him at Stubb's in Austin earlier this year...so amazing, so inspiring...with most of this band intact. Quite a character with cowboy hat from a local and hot pants. Such a great songwriter. Amazing

  • What is it about human nature that we applaud drug abuse. It kills so many great musicians.

    Anyway,

I love this song. I love Rufus.

  • So is he off drugs now? i hope so, going to see him next week!! cant wait, he is the best!!

  • i just read some of the other comments so i guess he is? hmm... oh well he is fantastic!!

  • yeah, he quit, im not sure when, but i saw a video where he said he did

    i love him <3!!

  • yeah, elton john encouraged him to go to rehab, and he did! thankfully, would have hated it if he had ended up like amy winehouse is now - she needs an Elton John to help her into rehab (and staying there)! Lovely song btw

  • I like the studio verson better with my headphones...it sounds amazing.

  • This guy is not only a great singer.

I've seen him twice in Portugal and even got to meet him.

He's the best entertainer i've ever seen.

    Go Rufus!

  • this performance is better than his studio version

Elton John encouraged him to go to rehab.

This song is basically telling us that: everyone needs support.

    I love this song dearly

Thanks for this bitter knowlege Rufus!

  • everything is gonna be ok.

    RUFUS WAINWRIGHT IS HERE.

  • holy shit, what a wonderful performance! One of his best songs, just love the guy!

  • What a performance. What a phenomenal performance.

  • great song. i love the "look in her eyes" part.

  • yeah i know what you mean

  • bloody hell that was good!

  • OMG OMG OMG Thank you so much Rufus Wainwright is my hero and this is the best vid of this, one of my favorite songs

  • One of my favourite songs ever.

  • Wow...what a performance! He really gives it his all.

  • oh boy! All good!

  • I wish I could sing that well on drugs!

  • Nononono... he's not still on drugs :)

  • what a fucking song

  • Ahhhh I LOVE LOVE LOVE this song!! Rufus Wainwright is just absolutely wonderful! I completely adore him.

  • Good song. The second part of the song reminds me of radiohead

  • i think this song sounds a million times better live, and i love the recorded version. so this version is basically amazing!

  • Rufus, how can we all thank you for this music? I'm a 67-year-old fan who has awful things happen to me over the past 12 years. I've lost everyone I've loved to terrible deaths. It's like the world has vanished. But then last month I stumbled onto your music, totally out of the blue, and I feel so blessed. You speak to eternal truths with such depth, such honesty, such insight and such beauty. God bless you for being you. I feel I can breathe again.

  • the gay messiah is coming, man.

  • Amen!

  • i love this song. he really is wonderful live.

  • is this an outtake from the fillmore show?

  • absolutely class song soaring, meloncolic atmospheric...ehhh ive run out of adjectives

  • Perhaps one of the most beautiful songs ever written?

  • You wouldn't get an argument from me :)

  • a three day what?????

  • a horrible 3 day ?? chrismentage? what? what did he say?

  • Crystal-meth binge

  • lol

  • I think that this is one of the most beatiful songs, (and yes it make me cry too). This man knows love, and life, a true artist..brilliant and sexy....
