@everyone. It depends on the machine. If its a pink nostalgia electronics cotton candy machine, look in the label and most likely it will say hard candy or floss. But only certain ones on the retro line take hard candy.

The machine takes 3 to 5 mins to warm up.Kmart is selling this machine for $39 I hav got one works really well

@MsPinkEmoPrincess You can use normal sugar, but it doesn't work well. The melted granules are so small that they plug up the holes so the melted stuff cant get out. If you want to use normal sugar; then buy sugar cubes.
