This interview could have been so much better. The questions were unfocused and apparently not thought out in advance. A largely wasted opportunity. But the ukulele piece at the end was a treat.
no one has any idea what it is like for to become well known. the thing is, both the interviewer and viewee are simply alive, in suffering and awkwardness, in anticipation of mistake or success! Steevenn is the kind to tell you all about his parameters, his dislikes. the interviewer is prone to a relaxed, but adderall fueled indyness. and you are doing the stupid and smart things that you are doing.
Merritt could probably do this to anyone. The guy in purple probably knows a lot more about music than he let on. Good to hear Merritt talk though. I love how early on Merritt is viewing himself in third person when he mixes up his ears.
The "Hmm....Hmm...." I think is only Merritt disagreeing with the idea that one should play bad music to make their friends leave. On the contrary to what the interviewer thinks, he is NOT direct. He's hesitating before responding, probably hoping that it will not hurt the interviewer too much. But he's right: do not play bad music at the end of your parties. Just tell your friends you are tired. I'm suspicious that he hates party music yet dances in gay bars. I sense self-dishonesty.
This is the most painfully shit interview ever.

Wow, most awkward interview I have ever seen. It kind of looked like stephin merritt just maybe did not want to be there, possibly? I could be wrong.

@1991stacy lol if you watch any of the other interviews with Stephin Merritt on them, you come to find this is a steady trend my friend.

"It's a good technique...if you ever want to kick people out, just put on something bad."
....SM:"Hmm....I think I would just ask them to leave."

I don't know why people insist interviewing Stephin Merritt when its so obvious that he doesn't enjoy it. Why not interview Claudia Gonson?

He's one of my favourite songwriters ever, but holy F*** is this man a painful drag of an interview.

Does Stephin have Asperger's? He seems a little shy. He's not making eye contact so...

Why can't someone do a proper interview of this guy? This interviewer is a joker.

i heard stephin merritt's interview on fair game with faith saile and i've concluded that i think stephin is a pseudo-intellectual.
he talented, no doubt, but i think he hates the fact that he isn't smarter than what he is and it shows.
yo, stephin, be nice, dude, and stop acting like you're 2 smart for your shirt!

good interview besides the formidable awkwardness.
