I'm really liking that philosophy of always keeping dynamics alive on every mix. As @flufferpuff67 said, It's about the song. It's a mix, not a "hey, listen to my guitar only" record.
Graham another top tip! I have bought your REthink mixing series and it is really very good. Anyone want to improve be it amateur or pro could learn from that series! You are doing a great thing here mate.
have to say its a great tip as a guitarist myself i would say i would rather have a song that builds up and has a nice dynamic feel than one with a wall of constant noise
I like doing something like this as well. I've done things where before a song gets busy I automate a high pass filter on the bass so as soon as it gets busy the bass hits you and you groove.
'DROPS' was a term we used for doing this back in the day on analog consoles(SSL,NEVE)...had to manually mute multiple tracks in real time as tape was being played back for mixdown.
I produce electronic music, and though some of these videos may not apply to the type of music I make, I will say that these are by far some of the best tips I have seen, and when I do put these tips into my work, it really makes a difference. Keep it up man, I really enjoy these videos.
@NotImune a tip for beginners? Have you ever listened to music closely? This is a very common thing that a lot of producers do. You have no idea how many takes get left out in the final product in professional recordings do you? Sure you as a guitarist would get angry but me as a listener would like the song more if it wasn't overwhelming with a wall of guitars all the way through. It's dynamics it's music.
@JoelMcCoy89@jonny26281@flufferpuff67 ...seriously, you all take me too serious ;-). a) it's all a matter of taste. b) all I wanted to say is that I preferred to keep the stereo image intact because I think only one panned guitar is a little distracting (although good for an effect), I myself am automating everything all the time. I play Guitars, Bass and Keys and I would love to have every bit of my playing present in the mix all through the song, I know that doesn't work. Peace
i do this all the time graham, but when i started out recording years ago, i was just like that, the whole song would sound the same through out the mix. Very boring.
These videos are so great! Which each oone I find myself here shaking my head thinking "why is he giving this information away for free and why have I been lucky enough to find it!"
I'm a composer teaching myself home recording, and I keep getting frustrated because I don't want to get so bogged down in technical aspects of mixing, but I want to make great recordings of my work. Your approach has been PERFECT for me -- I feel so empowered now. Thanks!
These videos are a great help, I've pretty much had a year out of practice for this stuff and I now realize I'm a noobcake. Subscriiibed.

@NotImune "I as a guitarist" ... Get over yourself. It's about the song, not being in the spotlight every second.

@flufferpuff67 Hence, why I never let guitarists be present at the mixdown, haha.
