to me this movie was so boring and I can respect the fact the walt disney corporation wanted something different but this was way to different and gurgie is like gulumb (sorry for the mispelling) from lord of rings but kinda has that jar-jar annoyance.
I really love this film and find it so sad that it doesn't get a better following/recognition. Sure, it doesn't fully follow the books, but what Disney film follows all of it's source material? And it's dark tone is interesting, because it's something new whilst still managing to have those light Disney moments in there. Obviously, it's up to anyone whether they like The Black Cauldron or not, but it really isn't the black hole of misery so many people make it out to be, not at all.
I'd give the movie a 4 out of 5 stars. Good: animation, story, characters and something totally different from other Disney movie. Bad: I can't really see anything wrong some will say characters we're annoying but that didn't bother me some of the characters where fun to watch taking a break from the EPIC story. Some will say it's not a Disney kids film and that it's too dark. I can understand that but that doesn't mean it's a horrible film. This film was great and I loved every sec.
You know as a kid at the age of 3 I was really scared of the movie but at the age of 7 I really liked it. It's sad how this movie didn't do well and has been forgotten for years until the 90's. I don't think it's fair that people try to forget this movie because of it's mild violence and scary imagery. Disney studios was just trying to make something new and I have to give them an applause for doing so and making a whole new Disney experience.
the horned king has to be my fave animated movie baddie EVER!!! i love anything that is skull or skeleton related!!! b.t.w your vids kick ass hewylewis!!! keep up the good work!!!
Of the man being dissolved by mist. At the end of the video it also includes a picture of what the cover art for the DVD may look like.. Keep our fingers crossed and hope to get the movie on DVD Soon!
The Animated Lord of the Rings movie? John Hurt does the voice of the Aragorn in that movie. By the way if your still planning on doing a review of the DVD, it's coming Sept. 14th 2010 (It WAS June, but they pushed it back to September) but be warned: The Deleted Scene that will be in that movie? Im not exactly sure if it will be 'The' deleted scene of the man being dissolved by mist. Could be wrong, but cant get our hopes up.. :| Made a video on here with a couple more of those pictures of
You know, I think Disney wants to forget more about Song of the South than The Black Cauldron. Unless I'm mistaken, SotS didn't even get a VHS- let alone DVD- release at ALL. :(
This film would scare me as a child.I'm 17 now,and the scene where the Horned King dies still scares me to this day,but not as bad as it scared me back then.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE! I was watching this movie since I was 3 and I wasn't scared. It'll always be one of my faves. This is probably Disney's most underrated movie, but it definitely needs more recognition. And I loved this review! Thank you so much!
I think there's a Japanese anamotronic of the horned king along with the Black Caldron in Tokyo Disney's lair of villains in their verision of Cinderella Castle.
They USED to. The attraction closed down in April 2006 for unknown reasons. Looking at it again it was awsome! There were anamotronic skeletons rising right in front of the groups of people and a selected kid used a magic sword to destroy the evil.
Nice review, I commend you both for taking the time to look at one of Disney's darkest and underappreciated classics. Can't wait for The Last Unicorn!
Klatu Berata Nicto (or however you spell it)...nice reference there. as much as I love fantasy and this movie is certainly up my alley, I'm ashamed to admit that I forget about The Black Cauldron often. It's certainly not a bad film, but I guess it just didn't have that everlasting appeal that the more popular movies did. Thank you for reminding me of this movie. You two did great!
Great review. I vividly remember watching this in the thearter with my dad. Being only 4 at the time, I can definatly vouche on how horrifyingly scary this movie was. Then when it was released on video in 1998, I immediatly loved it! It truely is an underated film that deserves recognition.
I believe I watched this in preschool. Now that you point out Gurgie's death, Ray's death is coming into mind for some reason.

I knew John Bryner voiced the Ant and the Aardvark from the beginning. I'm a very big Pink Panther fan.
As for why Eilwony isn't part of the Disney Princesses, I have no idea. And yet they threw MULAN in there.......

Yeah, I was introduced to the movie by the home video release, I loved it despite the darkness of the plot.
In fact, I watched it a lot and I turned out alright *twitch*

I still don't get why Hayley Mills doesn't voice Eilonwy.
This film is guilty of a hard to remember heroine name.
Plus lacking appealing characters.
