So far ahead of their time! I saw them in Houston, in 1978, at the U of H campus...I was blown away!...and if I remember right, Eric Johnson opened the show.
Fantastic archive - so good to see. Absolutely the best band that ever existed. Where are the 3 of them now? Will they ever re-form? John playing complicated bass and singing great vocal at the same time; Terry singing and drumming at the same time - and Eddie with that violin playing. And what do we have to put up with today - things like X factor and non-musicians like Simon Cowell. Bring back the great music of the seventies.
@EmmaJonesLondon Oh, wow. They are all pretty active- John is singing and playing bass in the reformed Asia, Eddie has his own label and a dark new band called UZ, Terry records all the time- he put some marvelous trio records with Tony Levin & Steve Stevens about ten years ago, and did session work with Korn recently. I wish they would tour again- real nice blend.
@cheezruff Well, I still really enjoy and respect both drummers, but I just prefer the 4 piece line up. I still listen to the 3 piece line up a lot though too.
i Saw the first line up for$0.98 cents in 1978..Boath versions are great.. the firt work is a bit more improv Jazz in the Guitar..the TRIO has much more of a ROCK Edge to the sound.. I like boath for what each had to offer..You can't say one is better than the other..It comes down to what do you want to hear
I remember watching this on the Whistle Test. It was the first time I had heard them and I was totally blown away. Night After Night is for me one of the truly great live albums, that line-up at their peak.
The last progressive rock group of the 70's, the live album is excellent as are the two studio efforts. You can see what Wetton was aiming for here when he went on to Asia.
John Wetton did an excellent acoustic gig at my local theatre.Having a drink with him in the bar later,I had so much to talk to him about all the great bands he'd been in but we ended up just imitating characters from the "fast show"(yew 'avnt seen me....awright?) ect.
UK were a trio??....and, they didn't have a guitarist either??....man, I didn't know. Anyway, they played great here. Progressive, folk rock at it's finest!...had never seen Wetton with a beard before until watching this clip...he looks young, too....maybe 30 years old tops....Eddie Jobson looks like Cy Curnin of The Fixx....man, what a time!....1979!!!
The original group was a quartet, featuring Wetton, Jobson, Bill Bruford on drums and Allan Holdsworth on guitar. That lasted for one album and one tour. This is the second line-up.
I do not agree with your appreciation of John Wetton's talent. He is extremely talented in my opinion, one of my favorites, together with Eric Woolson of The Alan Parsons Project. And ASIA is one of the best bands of all time. Their first two albums are exceptionally good, in my opinion.
I too was at that show and it was one of the best concerts I've ever seen, to this day. Eddie is an incredible keyboardist but Terry Bozzio just floored me. Especially on Rendevous 6:02
@MADMAXDANIELS I was introduced to UK at the Jethro Tull concert in Miami, I guess it was '79, got the cassette of Danger Money in miami, then moved to LA and found a $4.99 vinyl copy of the first album UK. The Danger Money cassette broke, but I still have the album.
I sat right behind the bands at the LA Forum in 79. In the loge on the railing. Best vantage point to watch 2 of rocks greatest drummers. Barrymore Barlow and Terry Bozzio. Absolute MAGIC! Never be a time like that again.
In the top 5 concerts I've had the pleasure to witness. And I've seen some of the best. Walked in just as Alaska/Time To Kill was starting and the whole place was vibrating from Jobsons keyboard. Fog was rolling, purple and green lights....awesome!
Prog's last dying gasp....and quite a swansong. But you can hear Whetton's prog-pop writing style starting to surface here, eventually coming to full-fruition in (gasp) Asia. Ponder how the Mighty had fallen....but he'd more than paid his prog dues, so why not start making some real money and be able to eat steak rather than burgers? Nice organ work from Jobson, and Bozzio is at his best here, like Bruford on steroids.
Jobson did not buy his Hammond from Wakeman. He purchased it from a company called Pro-Co in Kalamazoo Michigan. I'm not sure where the "Wakeman Hammond" myth started but it is just that. Source: Keyboard Magazine interview
sorprendente y maravilloso video, los tres hacen una musica brutal, y no se extrana la virtuosidad de bruford and holdsworth, aunque brufords en su libro autografico, nos indique que jobson y wetton son solo craftsmen, son los mejores artesanos que existen.
Wow - they don't make hem like this anymore! Amazing all of them... Terry's killing on drums, John's vocal and bass tone are great and Big-Job rips on the violin.
They are very different in style, but the sound for their self titled album and the three tracks on the Danger Money album with the 4 of them sound more full in my opinion. I do really enjoy all UK and even with the trio, they still sound virtually the same. I just think something seems to be missing a little bit. I guess it is Holdsworth's guitar really. Its a shame they didn't stay together longer because they sure were an awesome band! Actually, I've listened to Danger Money more.
John's voice just sounds so good. Bozzio is amazing of course. And Eddie is simply a Godsend - I miss all the keyboard racks too! It's just not right these days with one keyboard and a laptop!
whew, Wetton has been in some mighty lofty places. Saw both incarnations of this band, both great shows, but the 1st with Bill Bruford and Alan Holdsworth was a prog fan wet dream. Especially since a yet unkown Eric Johnston opened the show, his 1st time on a big stage, he gave it EVERYTHING, ....wont be forgetting that night.
well, i just listened to ceasar's. I never saw them live. It was so cool to see eddie on the glass violin. That thing is totally amazing. Unlike anything I've ever heard
