Awesome job.. I love the rear-naked to arm-bar transition. He's going to be great if he sticks with it. Triangle escape / pass / mount / arm-bar.. woot!! Great job young man. :))
Do you have brazilian jiujitsu classes for teens in Key West?? If so my son really wants in! Could you call Debra Jo at 305 872 9844? Thanks - we are in Little Torch!
Boyd here, one of Rich's old students from Key West. Good to see you & vid is awesome. I am living in Palm Bay now & training with Edgard Dutras BJJ (Soon to be BTT of Melbourne)My son Isaac turned 5 & I just got him his 1st Kimono. Thanks for the inspiration and good training. God Bless
Thanks Boyd! Have fun with your son, that is what it is all about. To train my son, I never did "lessons", we just "played" and I would show him "tricks" to make me tap and say "uncle". He really took to this approach, have a good time!
It's sad to see the direction that things are going in when we'd rather argue that comment on the original post or video. This is an excellent job done by that young man. He is a credit to all of us into the martial arts/MMA, sport or otherwise.
Outstanding job by both the instructor, demonstrator and the kid. I look forward to more.
To the guy who commented that Japanese jujutsu techniques are "inferior": the style of jujutsu I study has 118 basic techniques. I only ever see BJJ people using the rear naked choke and the most common armlock. If BJJ is superior, where are all the techniques? Sorry, but BJJ is a watered-down version of Japanese jujutsu with an over-emphasis on groundwork.
Yes japanese jiu jitsu is much better than brazilian jiu jitsu right! That's why shooto champion Shinya Aoki and ZST and cagerage champion Mazakazu Imanari study Judo and BJJ? Oh what??
Your comment is only relevant to people who have trained for a few years. If you study jujutsu for 20 years there is no reason why you can't achieve 100% proficiency in 100 techniques. In Japan, training is seen as lifetime commitment not just a crash course in how to win fight in a ring with rules to safeguard the fighters.
so perhaps you only ever see BJJ people who've trained for a few years :) and hence your impression.
and if you're right, then why don't japanese jiu-jitsu practicioners come over and win bjj competitions, proving that bjj is merely a "watered-down version" of their martial art. actions speak louder than words (including comments on youtube :>).
My belief is the more than you know the more likely you are to survive an attack (in the real world, there are no rules, and possibly weapons and more than 2 people can be involved). I'm happy to admit BJJ's effectiveness in the ring but, since it is groundwork-based, it leaves much to be desired as a self-defence art.
note that i'm not bashing traditional martial arts (i actually happened to train aikido for several years before i took up bjj), but they do have numberous (and serious) limitations too. i'm trying to stay open-minded and i wish you the same - maybe you'd enjoy having a taste of BJJ in a good club to find out if it's really a watered-down version of sth else, or a new quality on its own. 1st hand experience is irreplacable.
what was that guy thinking he could have totally had a triangle at 2:00

the question here is
* 100% proficiency in 20 techniques
or
* 20% proficiency in 100 techniques?
bjj goes for the former, traditional martial arts (typically) for the latter.

you're right, but most bjjers are aware of that as well and they cross-train in various stand up disciplines.
as for the weapons or multiple attackers, MY belief is that (despite of popular claims), no system or martial art is going to protect you
