What's with this "believability" criteria!? A movie doesn't have to be believable to be profound, insightful and touching! Do I actually believe that a town would go along with Lars' delusion as in this movie? Absolutely not! But does that take away from the beautiful message of this wonderful film, with the lead brilliantly portrayed by Ryan Goslin? Absolutely not! Is the movie "It's a Wonderful Life" any less profound because it's not believable? No way! ZuZu's petals for the win!!
The look on Lorenzo's face when Marcia mentioned her yoga class...PRICELESS!!
Saw "Lars and the Real Girl" a couple days ago and I LOVED it. The quirky premise of the film drew me in (a drama involving a SEX DOLL??). I was expecting crass comedy but in the end, I was touched by the movie's humanity. The townsfolk's acceptance of Bianca as being a "real girl" was unrealistic but it served the purpose of establishing Lars as a valued person and not simply as a freak to be ignored and/or mocked.
Regarding Lars and the Real Girl: Wow, Lorenzo is surprisingly off-point on this one. Marcia hits the nail on the head. If anything, Lars is far more "European" than Dan.
Both were dry and Lars had no believability. The notion that a town would be selfless enough to help Lars with his problem are both laughable and sad.
I have to side with Marcia BIG TIME on this one, to say you love dan and hate lars is a joke,Lars is a beautifull and moving film Dan is watchable sugary sickening dirge
Lars and the Real Girl is brilliant, Dan in Real Life is horrid, horrid cliche crap. (Cliches aren't necessarily bad, but when you have a movie hitting *every* single sitcom cliche it's painful)
Well you are entitled to your opinion, but I disagree completely. Lars and Real Girl went nowhere. It was trying too hard. It screamed "LOOK! THIS IS AN INDIE MOVIE!" Dan in Real Life is, like Marcia said, escapist and not based in reality, but it's just a lovable little diverting slice of pie in that way. It is definitely cliched, but at the very least I think it has a heart and soul.
I loved Dan In Real Life and I liked Lars And The Real Girl. Both movies are driven by the performance of the leading men. Without the performances of Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling, both films would have been much worse!
See the basic masculine and feminine archetypes of these two's generation. The guy which represents the patriarch has owned the world, as james brown sings, its a mans world and for 1 million years the grandmothers ruled the earth in peace. Its easy to see here why.
I think Lars was a great movie. I agree with Marcia. I think the man was thinking there was going to be some action going on. Do you not have a heart? This is about a man who lost his mother because she gave birth to him and never got to meet her, Dad who was depressed, a brother who left. Lars did not know how to relate to women. I cried a lot when Ryan was feeling sad. Dan in real life was OK. I'm a Steve's fan but it does not compare at all. I hated how Dan wood chase her like a dog.
These reviews are awesome. Thanks for mentioning Love Object. That film is brilliant and really takes the "relationship with a sex doll" delusion to a truly interesting level.
It seems Marcia has more sophistication when it comes to taste in movies. If Lorenzo has to have action in his movies he's going to miss out on a lot of great movies.
I agree with marcia about Lars--it was lovely. It's a great indicator of whether someone has empathy and kindness in their heart if they like that movie. Dan in real life was just ok, Emily Blunt was the best part--all 5 minutes of her!
I did enjoy 'Dan in Real Life' but didn't think it lived up to the initial promise. It fell back into cliche & got unreal with the talent contest nonsense, but still an enjoyable film.
I agree with Marcia concerning "Dan in Real Life." That family was overbearingingly upbeat. I had a panic attack just spending the length of the movie with them. The family games, the working out in the yard, the talent show? That happy ending would be short-lived I bet. I do agree with Lorenzo that the kernal of the story is great. It's a perfect dilema but everything surrounding it was so sickly sweet and contrived it undermined the "real" story.
hahah i loved lorenzo's views on dan in real life, i totally agree with him. It was a great film. I'll admit there were some obvious cliches, but all in all I was very happy with dan in real life. great reviews you two!
Yesterday I wrote a comment stating that the female geezer has no evolved sense of love because she unlike the male geezer was unable to feel the true feelings in Dan. The male geezer agreed. This was not a slight, but a remark about awareness of which there are infinite levels. In Dan. the quote"Love is not an emotion-it is an ability" speaks to this. Why erase? Are we not democratic? What are you afraid of--knowledge of your own level?
lorenzo is worldly and marcia is very pc. in total agreement about michael clayton and was so glad that you knew he wasn't going to die. thought the scene with the horses subtle and beautifully non-written. was able to watch three days of the condor more than once. so happy to have found you.
These two adorable, intelligence, knowledgeable people beat the other TV reviewers hands down. Why? Because they helped to make pictures. They understand structure. At the same time, they show us who each is by sharing their emotional responses with us. Their disagreements just make me like them and respect them more. Thank you reel geezers!
Dan in real life is a cliche romantic comedy with better acting (something I enjoy)
