On this date in 1981 {Jan. 24th} 'Crying' by Don McLean entered the Billboard's Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at No. 5 and spent a total of 18 weeks in the Top 100. In 1961 Roy Orbison took 'Crying' to No. 2 {for 2 weeks} and it spent a total of 16 weeks in the Top 100!!!

Don McL doesn't have quite as powerful a voice as Roy Orbison, but he does start this song more quietly than Roy and build it up more gradually (and less theatrically) to the final, wrenching chorus. Can't pick which version I prefer!

I've always loved this version. my only complaint. It would have sounded so much better if he had played the guitar with his fingers instead of a pick so it wouldn't sound so clunky. using a nylon string guitar would even sound better
