This song came on the radio about a half an hour after my brother Daniel's burial. It was like he was saying good bye to me for the final time. Everytime I hear this song, it reminds me of the happiest memories of him, and the never ending sadness of his death.

When he played Daniel, as it came to the solo you could feel the stillness in the Spectrum and you understood that everyone in the audience was listening to the solo to hear if it was going to be as perfect as the studio recording. Of course the solo was perfect and at the end of the it there was a tremendous but very muted roar of approval. Elton John ranks right up there with the greatest there ever was.

The lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin, Elton's writing partner. When Elton wrote the music for it, he chopped off the last verse because he thought the song was already too long. This completely changed the meaning of the song, as the deleted verse explained that "Daniel" was a Vietnam Vet who returned home after the war, lost his eyesight, and decided to leave America and go to Spain. With the last verse chopped off, it became a fairly vague story of 2 brothers who part ways.

The song was co-written by Elton and Berrnie Taupin as was most of his work during this prolific period. Danial his brother (fictional) lost his sight in Vietnam yet returned and faced protesters feeling disowned by his own country he flies to Spain where he had spent shore leave to live out his life. @josemanuel599 I think I do I have a brother younger than I by 9 years. As we really started to get to know each other I joined the Navy and was in Desert Shield/Storm when I came back I was different from the brother he knew. I started College and away I went again went abroad and came back than he left for college. I am now 41 and he is 32 and we are building a brotherhood we never had. That is how i relate to this song. I do not cry much but everytime I hear it I do get misty. Thank you Greg

I saw him in concert in '89 at the Spectrum in Philly. The entire event was great. When he played Daniel, as it came to the solo you could feel the stillness in the Spectrum and you understood that everyone in the audience was listening to the solo to hear if it was going to be as perfect as the studio recording. Of course the solo was perfect and at the end of the it there was a tremendous but very muted roar of approval. Elton John ranks right up there with the greatest there ever was.

I love this song too. I've lost both my eldest, and youngest brother. I never fails to think of them whenever I hear this song... and yeah,.. it never fails too make me cry. It was my little brother who first turned me on to it way back when it was new. He passed away on August 24th 2008. Little brothers aren't supposed to go first.... and I do miss you so much. Rest in peace lil' bro. I'll catch up with you very soon.

@Foppa921 I get why you think so, but it was about a veteran who was blinded in the Vietnam war who had a difficult homecoming and went to Spain to forget, told from the point of view of his brother. Bernie Taupin wrote it because he felt empathy for returning soldiers who no longer fit in.

I named my late son after this song, just because I liked the name. But the words are so poignant now: "Lord, I miss Daniel, I miss him so much" and "Daniel, you are a star in the face of the sky." Actually, my biological son is now a constellation.

Back in the early 70's this song was released by Elton John. I immediately went out and bought the album (yes album, I'm that old...LOL). This was my favorite on the album along with "Candle in the Wind". Years later, Feb 1978, I had my 1st son and gave him the name Daniel. "Daniel your a star in the face of the sky".

The lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin, Elton's writing partner. When Elton wrote the music for it, he chopped off the last verse because he thought the song was already too long. This completely changed the meaning of the song, as the deleted verse explained that "Daniel" was a Vietnam Vet who returned home after the war, lost his eyesight, and decided to leave America and go to Spain. With the last verse chopped off, it became a fairly vague story of 2 brothers who part ways.

So I never could figure out exactly what this song was about so I did a little research on the internet and here is what I was able to find. The song was co-written by Elton and Berrnie Taupin as was most of his work during this prolific period. Danial his brother (fictional) lost his sight in Vietnam yet returned and faced protesters feeling disowned by his own country he flies to Spain where he had spent shore leave to live out his life. Some of the confusion is because a verse was removed
