  • can you drink it without purification?

no need to cook or what?

  • @laurentprodz No need to purify. Drink it straight from the tree.

  • how did you close the cut?

  • @gianandri1989 Bung it very securely with another piece of wood. It will be fine and it will heal well.

  • Ahhhhh refreshing! Cheers mate!

  • you can also tap sweet gum trees

  • great job man!

  • Comment removed

  • anyone see the big dead spider by were he tapped tree lol

  • WATER!! yay!! good tip 4 survival

  • Does this work on River Birch trees? I'm not sure if they are different from normal Birch trees, or if this would work on one.

  • Love watching this video. Just the sounds of nature are so very relaxing!

  • when do you tap birch trees?

  • @5937824

in spring, before the leaves starts to grow.

  • its not water, its sap, not u pablo, but all the people asking questions on what you do with the "water"

  • is this the only type of tree yuo can use or can you use something like a cedar tree

  • @loku1125 not cedar but maple, sycamore or hornbeam

  • @prmaklpboo oh ok thanks

  • @loku1125 You can also tap box elder and hickory trees.

  • What do you do with all that water?

  • @WuTangghost0007 drink it. it''s very refreshing

  • thnkx 4 posting this video! this is my first year tapping birch, I have noticed that some trees will have a golden color sap sort of like the color of apple juice , Why is that? & is it still drinkable?

  • Boiling or freezing the sap will get rid of the water and make the sugar stronger. Also plugging the hole after you are done with it is an urban myth. It is actually bad for the tree. Imagine if you have a punture wound and to stop it from bleeding you took a foreign substance and shoved it into the hole. You would get an infection. Trees are no different. The hole will seal itself. If there is something in there it has to heal itself around something that doesn't belong there.

  • where did you get that knife

  • phil siddell

  • getting that much water from the tree wouldn't kill it right? and by the way thats a VERY nice knife :)

  • No it won't kill the tree as long as make sure the hole is plugged properly.

  • okay thanks alot

  • 1 hour 20 mins

  • if looks clean, should I drink it?

  • Only if it's clear. If it's cloudy I wouldn't drink it.

  • but couldent you heat it to sterilize the water so it is clean

  • Then you would take the natural sugar and taste out as well.

  • How do you plug the tree when you're done??? What trees can you tap later in the year or in winter?

  • Hi. You just tap in a bit of wood larger than the hole or split you have made. I also put some mud and debris around the area as well.

I don't know of any trees that you can tap in winter. In spring the sap is rising so the flow is fast.

  • Great video, very informative!

  • Do NOT forget to plugg the wound in the tree after you are done or the tree might DIE.

Take care of your natural livingroom.

  • so you can just drink this like water?

  • Yes you can. If the liquid is too cloudy then it might have too much bacteria in it so in that case I wouldn't drink it. Otherwise yes.

  • no no no you should have told us how to stop it from dripping

now theres gunna be a bunch of ppl in america killing trees

  • Lol :)

  • you can tap them during summer and fall by tapping a branch, the leaves make sugar and make great syrup too

  • cool gna give it a go tomorrow :]

  • Like sugar maples, the sap that flows up through birch trees in early spring is

sweet and tasty. It also contains important vitamins and minerals, like vitamin

C, potassium, manganese, and calcium. Herbalists and Native American

Indians have long known of its medicinal benefits but its place in the

confectionery market is yet to be determined. Europeans are bottling birch

sap, Alaskans are producing syrup from it, and a sole New Hampshire Master

    Gardener is making beer.

  • what is the best time of year to birch tap?

  • Start having a look from the 2nd week of March onwards depending on where you are in the country and the weather conditions.

  • right around the end of winter/start of spring, for two weeks, but you can tap branches year round for leaf sugar, syrup and such.

  • Simplicity is the key in bushcraft ive found, this is a very effective method of tapping Birch. I tend to put a piece of cloth or some clean tights over the bottle top to stop anything nasty getting in.

  • do most trees or all tree do this?

  • how can we identify a birch tree, so we know which one is a birch tree? and cant we also tap pine trees and drink there sap?

  • Zerowildfire's nearly right. You can tap Birch, Beech, Sycamore and Maple. That's about it really.

    Pablo.

  • hickory trees!!!! thats my favorite, you can also eat the nuts but its wicked hard to get the meat out

  • mm maple syrup lol

  • so, all the tree's that u tap and sap comes out are drinkable?

  • Only Birch tree's. Dont try it with any plant or tree unless you know what your doing. You could poison yourself. Also. Big thing to remember. The hole MUST be capped proprely or the tree will die.

  • could this work with pine too?

  • yea but u cant drink tha sap.. use the sap strip from the tree to light fires (its expremly flamable) or to make pitch (a natural glue)

  • lol yeah thats why i asked i just wanna make pitch...

  • yes you can drink the sap from birch!!.....VERY tastey!!!...they make birch beer, soda, syrup as well as lots of other stuff from birch

  • I know most of you will know this...but for those that don't, remember to plug the wound when you've taken just what you need...the tree needs a drink too folks.

    Cheers.

  • yay i went birch tapping , managed to get about 4 litres in 1 day

  • yay im going birch tapping today

  • Please explain what you do with the sap.

  • you drink it

  • So, would that be a sweet birch?

  • That's a Silver birch tree.

  • with all that time u could set up a camp and start on a fire.

  • I guess it is worthy to know your trees and the months to do it. lol. Are there any types of sap that when u drink, you get a stomach ache? That would suck, especially if you don't have toilet paper lol.

  • Good video thanks. But you dont show plugging the cut after. With such a small cut how do you do that so the tree doesnt keep loosing sap?

  • your videos are good but some narration would make them much better

  • i found an auger and a piece of wood with the middle scraped out to form a channel worked very well as u get a deeper wider hole and get more sap!

id just lie to say that you can only do this in the first 3 weeks or so of march

and after you've finished remeber to plug the hole!

    thanks for this x

  • how much easier did that look than when ray"i'm not a celebrity" mears did it. I know what i'm doing when i'm out camping this saturday.

  • ayeayeayeaye, you might be a little late as this is near the end of June and the sap has already risen. You might be lucky though. Best to try in March.

    Cheers, Pablo.

  • Wont be long till March now! ;)

  • I'll have to try and find someone who will come with me to try it out then. Hmmmm who do i know that would be willing to do that?

  • So long as It's not before 3pm I know just the guy. This guy doesn't rise in the mornings though, probably along with the sap.

  • this is a stupid question but........ is the point of tapping the tree for drinking water or for the sap to make syrup i guess you could drink the sap as long as its not too sugary that it would just make you thirsty please answer

  • Not a stupid question at all. The sap is not sugary at all. It's almost like water, maybe a little sweeter, therefore it quenches your thirst. Good to use a mixure. You can make syrup form it (like maple sap) but I don't. Thanks for leaving a comment. Regards, Pablo.

  • I think you can tap all birches and sycamore too.

  • got to try that, can you do it Grey Birch too?

  • Tapped my first birch just a while ago, enjoyed it. Thanks for showing us how easy it is to do :)

  • Tis that of the year! Wow thats one fast flowing tree :D Good work prmaklpboo.

  • My brother wants to know why there is not any more tapping videos?

  • Excellent Job. I am glad I found your channel!
