by far the best game ever and i am a kentucky fan..only game i ever cried over..what a pus i am..whoever had the ball last was going to win..sweet revenge against duke in 98..never give coach k a timeout to set up a play..and pitino..guard the inbounds dammit..great post even though it brought back wretched memories
@TheReelLifeProduct No UK fans hate every team that is good. UK should be the only basketball team in the NCAA, lets just remove all the teams and give KY the title every year.
Rick Pitino took the blame for his player's defense, saying that he told his guys not to defend Laettner too aggressively for fear of putting him on the foul line.
Christian Laettner was perfect from the floor that night, so Coach Pitino had to make the tough decision to play him loose, as opposed to accidentally fouling him and giving him what were essentially a couple of automatic free throws to win the game.
@12889414 you're retarded, you dont foul.... you play good defense and not give them a easy shot. Laettner had a nice contested shot and there wasn't anything kentucky did wrong.
Yeah 34 blew it big time, it's one thing not to foul but he should have held a vertical position with his hands straight up, they can't call a foul in that situation.
one of the greatest moments in my life,I remember jumping off the couch screaming at Laettner to shoot the goddamn thing I could'nt believe he took time to dribble.
why are people so jealous about Duke??? when you win as much as the Blue Devils do, and have such a respected coach like Coach K... you can hate us as much as you want, but you still have to beat us!!!
@nightcat3500 Fuck off. What do we UK fans have to be jealous of Dook about? We have more national championships and the most all-time wins. That's why Dook fans are hated too. They think so highly of themselves for no reason. This shot should never have happened because Laettner, being the little bitch that he is, intentionally stomped on Timberlake. His faggot ass should have been ejected at that point but the refs always kiss Dook's ass so they looked the other way.

@nightcat3500 there was only 2.1 seconds to go and it was there whole season on the line you got to foul, but Laettner would have made the free throws so it really doesn't matter.
What made this one of the greatest games ever is that Duke was virtually unbeatable that year and Kentucky was just off probation with a bunch of guys (besides freshman Jamal Mashburn) that nobody else wanted. Duke had like 4 first round draft picks on that team and Kentucky had 4 guys that went on to sell life insurance.
@onlykathynelson yeah that shot was amazing then a few years latert he hits an incredible shot once again he won an espy for that shot in the Minn H.S state championship
The impressive part isn't the jumper, it's that he boxed out two men and caught a 75-foot pass and got off a good shot in 2.1 seconds. Only 1 in 100 times does a full-court pass get caught clean at the opposing foul line.
@packers256 nobody gave the game away that was the reason it is still considered the greatest college basketball game ever. I am Duke fan and mad props to UK in that game it had everthing basketball could even pack into one package from both teams, drama, execution, high scoring, great players(& yes the UK boys besides mashburn solitfide their careers in coll. bball history). It really was a masterfull game & to this day I still get goosebumps from seeing the game. shout out ot UK & DUKE.
@packers256 I guess you could say that. Duke could say the same thing if they never hit that shot b/c sean woods pissed in a bank shot over Laettner, but Duke doesn't have to say that now do they.
if someone had guarded the in bounds pass this video doesn't exist. When ever you see a buzzer beater where a team has to take the ball in from out of bounds 9 times out of 10 a buzzer beater occurs when nobody is guarding the in bounds passer. One of the biggest coaching mistakes that can be made.
Only reason this shot gets talked about is because it was for a trip to the final four, in overtime of an incredible back-and-forth game between two of the most storied programs in NCAA basketball history and it was made by one of the most polarizing stars in the history of college basketball at the end of one of the greatest games he ever played and the winning team went on to win the title. But other than that it's pretty lame.
One of those moments for which you'll always remember where you were when it happened....I was in third grade, at my grandmother's house in Michigan watching. As a rabid Duke fan, I was literally crying during that final timeout, because I thought there was no way Duke could win. I didn't understand at the time that if you get the shot off before the buzzer sounds, it still counts! I was like, "Huh!? They won!?!?" Just amazing.
I still think the shot by Blake Hoffarber in the Minnesota-Indiana game during the Big Ten Tournament in 2008 was better than this shot. Also, Hoffarber isn't an asshole that should have been ejected earlier in the game. Laettner is.
Blah, Blah, Blah, how can a person be so defined good or bad for one meaningless shot in another meaningless game. If they were so good then why was it so close, it could have happened either way or not happened at all, big f-ing deal. Why is this celebrated as some great contest. It was a mediocre game with a close end punctuated by a mundane shot that happened to go in at the last moment. There was no drama, desperate pass to obvious turn and shoot attempt happens to go in and win game. Blah.
You know what? That was one of the most stupid comments I have ever read. It was not a "desperate pass" and it was not just another "meaningless game." A huge trip to the final four was on the line for either team. And if one team manages to be able to get the ball perfectly down the court with no clock running down and the player who catches the ball has enough time to spare that they can dribble. Its called "perfectly done!" It will always go down in College Basketball history! You got PWNED!
@LegoLee329 I got PWNED? really? World of Warcraft slang? Ok, it was the greatest basketball pass and shot ever, in the greatest college basketball game ever , it was the most amazing thing to ever happen in the world of athletic sports, it was the most incredible bit of skill ever shown in any human endeavor yet attempted. That was sarcasm, it means nothing get over it. He lucked into being a hero, but just as easily could have been a goat, that is not what makes great history. PWNED? really?
Only reason this shot gets talked about is because it was for a trip to the final four, in overtime of an incredible back-and-forth game between two of the most storied programs in NCAA basketball history and it was made by one of the most polarizing stars in the history of college basketball at the end of one of the greatest games he ever played and the winning team went on to win the title. But other than that it's no more compelling than any other turn-around jumper I've ever seen.
@Pain5155 True... Except for the great pain that is still in the Ky fans that witnessed it. It's like when the space shuttle exploded. I still know how I felt because I still feel it today.
I know you guys wont beleive me, but I went to a clinic today in my city and I got the opportunity to get tips from Christain Laettner himself. It was an amazing expeirience. =]
thumbs up if you think Laettner should have given his Dream Team gold to Grant Hill since this play got him on Olympic Team.....easily could have been Shaq.
That game had it all: skill, determination, preserverance, and even the dark side of human nature. People forget that Laettner could have been ejected earlier for stomping on that dude.
@zcatera074 Which is exactly why this game was tainted. Laettner should have had his classless ass ejected. He had no business even being on the floor for this play. Without him, Kentucky wins. Dook fans should thank their lucky stars the refs weren't doing their jobs in this game.
@GreenDay1981 true, very true...easy to second guess Kentucky for not guarding the inbound, but it was right call....just a one in a million pass by Hill, and Pelphrey was petrified, I believe of fouling Laettner, for which it's hard to blame him.
@ddb630 obviously. I dont watch sports that mutch and im still a Kentucky fan, obviously since im from Kentucky. I think i said obviously too mutch. Whatever. Kentucky got in the final four so that proves that they are good.
I think the most overlooked part about all of this is that as soon as Woods made the jumper for Kentucky for the go-ahead basket with 2.1 seconds remaining, Hurley and Hill IMMEDIATELY called a timeout. Back then, the clock in NCAA Bball didn't stop in the 2nd half with under a minute left in regulation,
Don't forget this shot made Laettner 10 for 10 from the floor ....and he was 10 for 10 from the foul line (31 pts). All with the Final Four on the line. Easy to see why he is considered top five all-time for college players.
I encounter a lot of knuckleheads (Duke fans) who think this shot was from half court. Every year this shot seems to migrate further from the basket. In ten years people will be adamant that Laettner shot the ball from under Kentucky's basket.
Don't ever say Grant Hill isn't clutch. That one pass gave him a life long pass on being labeled as a guy who doesn't come through in the end. And being an Ohio State fan, its fun reading others rip on a team other than OSU. Ya fuck Duke! Fuck KY! I agree!
Oh and one more thing. my father went to Duke and i have autographs of Bob Verga, Jay Buckley, Jeff Mullins and many others. I know more about Duke than you should care about....so why do you? HATERS.....we LOVE you guys!!!
like all u assholes out in Haterville....you love to yammer on about Coach K and do your name-calling and yearn for the good old days.Duke is the reigning National Champion and Coach K is the best coach - period. No sense in looking in your crystal ball to see how we' ll do once he retires but pretty sure he wont leave Duke to go coach at UNC (a la Pitino) ACC fans couldn't care LESS about Kentucky. Maybe u would be better off focusing on UK. High blood pressure kills...
@vebtube0826 When did Pitino coach at UNC? I love how you Dook shitheads think Coach Krybaby is immortal and will be their coach forever. Hate to break it to you but he won't. I know you all think he walks on water though. If you don't care about Kentucky, you wouldn't be talking them, fucknut. Come back when you pass Kentucky in wins or National Championships. Won't ever happen. Keep telling yourself we're all jealous if that helps you sleep at night, chump. We have nothing to be jealous of.
@Beefforyou I'm pretty sure Kentucky and a lot of other teams have had plenty of turnaround jumpers from the free throw line. It's a pretty common shot you know.
@Beefforyou Oh yeah, you are so right. In their long and storied history, Kentucky has never made a basket at the buzzer to win a game. Are you really this stupid?
STILL the best shot in Basketball

I still think the shot by Blake Hoffarber in the Minnesota-Indiana game during the Big Ten Tournament in 2008 was better than this shot. Also, Hoffarber isn't an asshole that should have been ejected earlier in the game. Laettner is.
GreenDay1981 10 months ago
great game. everybody kept their heads about them, and they won the game at the last moment.
ricksamuell 10 months ago
I hate Duke but that's a very clutch pass.
ToxicConQueso 10 months ago
Blah, Blah, Blah, how can a person be so defined good or bad for one meaningless shot in another meaningless game. If they were so good then why was it so close, it could have happened either way or not happened at all, big f-ing deal. Why is this celebrated as some great contest. It was a mediocre game with a close end punctuated by a mundane shot that happened to go in at the last moment. There was no drama, desperate pass to obvious turn and shoot attempt happens to go in and win game. Blah.
ftheeddie 10 months ago
You know what? That was one of the most stupid comments I have ever read. It was not a "desperate pass" and it was not just another "meaningless game." A huge trip to the final four was on the line for either team. And if one team manages to be able to get the ball perfectly down the court with no clock running down and the player who catches the ball has enough time to spare that they can dribble. Its called "perfectly done!" It will always go down in College Basketball history! You got PWNED!
LegoLee329 9 months ago
@LegoLee329 I got PWNED? really? World of Warcraft slang? Ok, it was the greatest basketball pass and shot ever, in the greatest college basketball game ever , it was the most amazing thing to ever happen in the world of athletic sports, it was the most incredible bit of skill ever shown in any human endeavor yet attempted. That was sarcasm, it means nothing get over it. He lucked into being a hero, but just as easily could have been a goat, that is not what makes great history. PWNED? really?

100% shooting in this game for Laettner

At least a half of 1049 people are Duke bandwagoners.
skw4712 10 months ago
Only reason this shot gets talked about is because it was for a trip to the final four, in overtime of an incredible back-and-forth game between two of the most storied programs in NCAA basketball history and it was made by one of the most polarizing stars in the history of college basketball at the end of one of the greatest games he ever played and the winning team went on to win the title. But other than that it's no more compelling than any other turn-around jumper I've ever seen.
Pain5155 10 months ago
@Pain5155 True... Except for the great pain that is still in the Ky fans that witnessed it. It's like when the space shuttle exploded. I still know how I felt because I still feel it today.

Greatest college basketball game I've ever seen. And I can't recall anything even close.
Slikrik1212 10 months ago
That game had it all: skill, determination, preserverance, and even the dark side of human nature. People forget that Laettner could have been ejected earlier for stomping on that dude.
zcatera074 10 months ago
@zcatera074 Which is exactly why this game was tainted. Laettner should have had his classless ass ejected. He had no business even being on the floor for this play. Without him, Kentucky wins. Dook fans should thank their lucky stars the refs weren't doing their jobs in this game.
GreenDay1981 10 months ago
@GreenDay1981 true, very true...easy to second guess Kentucky for not guarding the inbound, but it was right call....just a one in a million pass by Hill, and Pelphrey was petrified, I believe of fouling Laettner, for which it's hard to blame him.
zcatera074 10 months ago
@zcatera074 I don't think fouling him would have done any good cause I think he was 10 for 10 on free throws.
GreenDay1981 10 months ago
Laettner is a bitch.

Man, this never gets old! 4 championships and counting baby! Let's go Duke!
bcfishjedi 10 months ago 2

IHaveArrived 10 months ago
Laetner should have been ejected for what he did earlier in the game. He's nobody's hero
MWCRAVE 10 months ago
Don't ever say Grant Hill isn't clutch. That one pass gave him a life long pass on being labeled as a guy who doesn't come through in the end. And being an Ohio State fan, its fun reading others rip on a team other than OSU. Ya fuck Duke! Fuck KY! I agree!
stevieballs22 11 months ago
Oh and one more thing. my father went to Duke and i have autographs of Bob Verga, Jay Buckley, Jeff Mullins and many others. I know more about Duke than you should care about....so why do you? HATERS.....we LOVE you guys!!!
vebtube0826 11 months ago
like all u assholes out in Haterville....you love to yammer on about Coach K and do your name-calling and yearn for the good old days.Duke is the reigning National Champion and Coach K is the best coach - period. No sense in looking in your crystal ball to see how we' ll do once he retires but pretty sure he wont leave Duke to go coach at UNC (a la Pitino) ACC fans couldn't care LESS about Kentucky. Maybe u would be better off focusing on UK. High blood pressure kills...
vebtube0826 11 months ago
@vebtube0826 When did Pitino coach at UNC? I love how you Dook shitheads think Coach Krybaby is immortal and will be their coach forever. Hate to break it to you but he won't. I know you all think he walks on water though. If you don't care about Kentucky, you wouldn't be talking them, fucknut. Come back when you pass Kentucky in wins or National Championships. Won't ever happen. Keep telling yourself we're all jealous if that helps you sleep at night, chump. We have nothing to be jealous of.

@GreenDay1981 You're just mad because Kentucky has never had a shot this awesome.
Beefforyou 10 months ago
@Beefforyou I'm pretty sure Kentucky and a lot of other teams have had plenty of turnaround jumpers from the free throw line. It's a pretty common shot you know.
GreenDay1981 10 months ago
@GreenDay1981 Not a 1 point down buzzer-beater...
Beefforyou 10 months ago
@Beefforyou Oh yeah, you are so right. In their long and storied history, Kentucky has never made a basket at the buzzer to win a game. Are you really this stupid?
