Very sad song. Somehow I remember this song being about another singer/songwriter from this time--Steve Goodman who passed away from Leukemia in 1984.
i, too, have been searching for this song ~~ i didn't know the song title, but i knew some lyrics. anyhoo ~ tonight while searching for another song i thought i'd google some of the lyrics (the lyrics i remembered, the song title i did not!) and waaaa-lah! up pops the name cashman and west and i knew at that moment, i'd hit pay dirt. : ) i LOVE how i can hear the scratchiness of the record player needle -- that phoot phoot fhoot sound that preceeds the song. thanks bundles onehit !
I have been searching for this song ever since 9/11 happened because that's exactly how I felt about NYC at the time. Full of despair. NYC being the friend that was dying. Thankfully our old friend has shown us all that she has plenty of life and prosperity and good times left in her. Thank you so much for posting!
This is great!...I looked for this song since 1972...it got a lot of local airplay when it was out, then disappeared, never to be heard again.....It shows that the Internet is good for something!
"When she was GOOD it was oh so GOOD." Another stalwarth behemouth death song - huge hit- 1972- never to be heard on (commercial) radio again. Why is it that some songs like Goddamn BJ THOMAS Raindrops keep fallin on my head- an annoying obnoxious song- NEVER goes away- but so many gems pass like ghosts- written out of POP history....
This song is on the album A Song or Two featuring "American City Suite". I recently purchased a phonograph and I dug out my old college record collection. This Cashman and West Album was in my collection. I am having a blast listening to my old albums.
This is the first time I have heard this song since I was a kid. Who ever posted this-Thank you. I was born and raised in NYC and listened to wnew Scott Muni Allison Steel Vince Scelsa-GREAT
This was actually about the death of Cashman & West's beloved New York City in the late '60s/early '70s. Contrary to popular belief, it's not about the death of a specific person.
I loved the Album Oriented Rock stations in New York, like WNEW and WPLJ. We could listen to all the cuts from the albums, not just the hit single. Songs didn't need to be under 3 minutes long, there were lyrics you could understand and sing with. Thank you for this.
Thanks so much for this song..I was a senior in high school and a lovely girl in my homeroom died at this time...The song fit the time perfectly......I believe October 1972?
Thanks so much for posting this.

If you know a line or two of a songs lyrics and Google it, you can get the title and artist's name- That's how I found this one here.

What a song! This was back in the day when a popular song could be transformed into grand theatre and still sell, and this is as good as it gets.

Yes, The Night Bird. Roscoe was on before her and he would read poetry to the Mooby Blues or EL&P.
