  • Great

  • remember this well. All the words are so true. all words end up around a table in the end.

I know a lee enfield rifle well 3.03

  • eins meiner ersten Lieder auf dem Kasettenrecorder 1970!!!

  • I like Eminem,Linkin park,Five finger death punch.But this guy is really good.=]

  • @commando2224 Do you think a mashup of this with the instrumental for Still D.R.E. would work? This has that kind of plinky piano riff... lol.

  • @deejayalemus lmfao

  • @commando2224 inorite?

  • @deejayalemus good idea man sounds good lol XD

  • Roger Whittaker is a great singer and writer...but a nicer gentlemen you will never meet.

  • I love this guy's singing

  • 16 People believe in If

  • ve reached a stage in life when I just like what I like and if people want to laugh or sneer, well let them, ignore them ang get on liking it still !

    I like this!

  • @myrtlemaid Well-said. I learned it several years ago.

  • Ive reached a stage in life where I can cope if people laugh or sneer at the music I like,, If it moves me in some way that's good enough for me and this song does just that

  • 18 Dislikes? Man Roger Whitaker Rocks!! 1,000X better than that Justin Beiber Faggot.

  • i was raised in a small town in West sussex and there was a band there called Saffron they became Roger Whittakers backing band has anyone heard of them please?

  • Ditto @afterthefox

  • Roger is very much alive and i got to see him in Cincinnati last month

  • i am a techno lover. but this song is the one we tell others we dont like. but maybe our parents had some good music.

  • i just have to ask is he dead

  • Does anyone know the album this song was on? Back around or 81 a friend played an album of his with this song which had other songs I loved on it but I can't remember the songs or the album. :(

  • @EquineDreams The earliest album this song was on (that I can find) is the album: The Last Farewell & Other Hits (released jan.1. 1974)

  • corny???no it isnt--no music is--only differant tastes my friend---this song and this mans voice is pure beauty

  • I'm 25 years old, love this mans music, and I'm proud of it!

  • @MrsMeiwes hi,i'm 82 and so do i love it.ray.

  • The man can sing; hasn't Simon Cowell given the planet his approval yet?

  • Fabulous song, and what lyrics! Hats off!!!

  • too logical and stable to make a bigger impression, but still so fuckin cool

  • My missus and me were at my parent's 50th anniversary do last night and there was a healthy dose of good ol' Roger and Perry Como sprinkled through by the DJ. I'm not a big fan of either but I have to say that listening to their songs brought back a LOT of good childhood memories for me and my siblings of both artists being played on the record player by Mum and Dad :)

  • It also applies to "IF I CHANGE" "IF I SAY I LOVE YOU MORE OFTEN" "IF I DONT SHOUT AT YOU ANYMORE" "IF I PROMISE TO LOVE YOU MORE" IF he only meant it..........its like the word "Sorry" easily said easily forgot.

    elizabeth7356@aol.com

  • @libby7356 Well Libby " if " May be , is a falsity , If " should not be used regards ones Emotional state because one should be sure and persise on ones own Emotional intent before speaking of ones self , there's No if i love you , one eather dose or Dose'nt , , i fear a lot of people are unsure of life and where there aim lies today .

  • this is my favourite song of his..just love his voice..he can make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up...pure class!.

  • I can totally relate to guys who had dad's who listened to this. I thought it was cornball - unlike the Bealtes or Elton John - but it's great stuff!

This is the best damn anti-war song out there. It is at least as good as Where have all the Flowers Gone? and probably harder hitting.

  • It would be nice to take this kind of music for granted and not yearn for it as I do nowadays.

  • is toch o zo mooi

    prachtig

  • Sounds like everyone here had great dads who introduced them to this music... Same here :)

  • i dont care what people think my dad loved this music and so do i along with chrstian music classical pantera and zombie mudvayne ...u name it it has a place in my collection

  • My dad played Whitaker 8 tracks in his van with a mural on the side. Totally bitchin' music

  • @TheChubbbhead My dad also had a Chevrolet Van, with a air brushed mural of a steamboat in the fog, with a round naval type bubble window. And of coarse I also learned of Roger Whittaker from my parents in the 1970's. That van had a fridge and a bed in the back, we camped in it in the smokey mountains. Good music still huh?

  • @Delticola My family had a Ford Econoline van (Gus the Mighty Ski Bus!) that took us from Ohio all over the western Rockies for ski trips, and they played RW, Linda Rondstadt, Jay and the Americans and the Bee Gees, et al on our 8 Track for those 40 hour DASHES across the country!! This was from 1970 until about 1977.

  • @jonibaloney2003 Damn an Ohio family with a ski fetish travelling all the way over to Colorado to ski. That's been an interesting phenomenon for me. Like here in Georgia, we have a few ski shops. It's like what the hell, who buys stuff here and takes it where to ski? Or a Dive shop in Iowa, like that could be big business there? Anyway as far as Ford goes, Ford makes a very good truck and a very good van.

  • =[ this guy is awsome lol... epic voice.

  • He's just fabulous and a joy to see in person!! Thank you sooo very much for posting this live video!!

  • simply beautiful

  • this is what a songs supposed to sound like .

  • I REMEMBER HIS SONGS FROM WAY BACK WHEN I WAS YOUNG THAT WAS MUSIC IN THOSE DAYS

  • you can see hes enjoying his work..and so am i.. :)

  • This is one big ol' nostalgic moment. Far out

  • I love him <3 he is my childhood (and I wasn't even born back then). my dad used to play this on road trips. I will do the same for my kids.

  • soft ,nice sound <3

  • thank you for the post. I wore this man's album out in the mid 70s. and you have no idea how much I like(d) it.!!

  • this sing sounds pretty amazing when done in a heavy rock style. like metallica style. its a juxtaposition...

  • roger whittaker...the living example of avuncular

  • I grew up with Roger Whittaker's music as my mom listened to it before I was even born. His music is always very soothing for me and brings me memories of my childhood days. What a great artist Roger Whittaker is- great voice, great songs and fantastic whistle unmatched by anyone. And a fantastic performer on stage, too. I will never stop liking Roger Whittaker.

  • I first heard this song on the TV show 'Life on Mars' and fell in love with it, it took me a few months to find out who wrote it but once I did I went out and bought a Roger Whittaker CD and have been a fan ever since. I hope people continue love and to discover his music - he is very talented and has such a rich, beautiful voice.

  • His (actually Pierre Cour lyrics) version "Apres La Guerre" is equally profound.

I love early Whittaker - saw him live a number of times during the early years when he was writing a lot.

I really do need to dig out and capture my old RW vinyl albums.

  • "If's an illusion...if is for children building daydreams." Oh, Roger, how true. Thank you for ul the striking younger Whittaker. Hmm, whatta voice.

  • This man not only had a beautiful voice, but had some powerful lyrics, very realistic

  • Man I love his music its speaks to me, it is so powerful and has changed my life and the way that I look towards the future no more ifs for me

  • My memories were renewed last year when my dad past away and we started to look into songs which he loved. At the funeral we played the Last Farewell, one of his favourite songs and so apt for any englishmans funeral but listening through the albums there were so many songs which bought me lots of tears but so many good memories of my childhood. And like alot may say, its a million miles away from my stuff but hey, childhood imprints on us all .... thanks Roger :o))

  • ....and HE can whistle,,, uhu

  • good anit-war song along with bob dylan & donavan and th others

  • I love this song, however I do prefer the LP version as the tempo is a bit slower, still what a lovely song and a great voice.

  • I love this song. I could sing it all day, lol. He has such a powerful deep voice. I only wish that he wrote more of it. His lyrics are very poetic. I can relate to thefairlysimple1 in regards to growing up listening to Whittaker's music.

  • If I knew then what I know now,

I thought I did, you know somehow.

    How true is that ?

  • the 13 people who don't like this need to be kicked in the balls

  • @djgnz yes lets hit people that dont like the same music as your.. no wonder the west went to war over missing mass destruction weapons.... bad music taste is enough..

  • Comment removed

  • @djgnz oh your comment was that ?.. so u dont have to excuse your lame comments.. but i should shut up ?..

And btw.. middle east ? where is that ? its called the Center east.. man are u stupid ?

  • @djgnz or the fanny - could all be girls :)

  • @djgnz i'll supply the boot

  • I was listening to the radio one day when I heard Roger Whittaker the first time. I found his voice and the words he was singing incredible. The range and quality of his voice is one of the best I've ever heard. I'm not sure why so many people dismiss him as a musician. I turned 18 in 1968 and faced the draft for Vietnam and I found this song stimulating many thoughts and reflections.

  • Dat is een vanuit me jeugt jaren is hij komen zingen in Veurne in mijn school van toen

  • Great!

  • I think this may be my first visit to your page and I Plan to begin posting my songs here. 'One More Time, American' I think you'll find extremely interesting.

I was in the Coast Guard in '71. I used to watch the stars on the flight deck as I played the Moody Blues. I have a couple of favorite CDs.

One More Time, America' was wanted by the Letterman Show September 30, 2001, but I missed the booking.

  • i feel like crying i remember this

  • asd

  • Truly good music with a social message has always been able to advertise itself simply by HEARSAY! Take care ADonovan43

  • Wow, found this record at a goodwill recently looking for sample material. Amazing song from start to finish period.....

  • Roger Whittaker was an "international superstar" -- He was greatly popular in the UK and English-speaking and other countries around the world. He was popular in the United States -- but maybe to an older audience .. that is why some folks never heard of him IN the US .. but he was a superstar in the rest of the world.

  • fantastic

  • ...i know this music is corny(i remember my dad's playing his album in the 70's on fourth ave in brooklyn)...i know i wouldn't be caught dead near my friends uttering this guys name...i know this is 180 degrees away from what i'm into...but i do know two things....1.this guy has a great voice...2.this is a great song....

  • @afterthefox agree 1000 percent...i avoid letting my friends get a hold of my i touch cause they would mock my large collection of roger whittaker music....blame it on my dad

  • @billnye9901 Yeah it's emerassing as hell to admit you like good music. Let's all pretend we like the bullshit music they put out today, so they will keep producing the shit. Maybe if people admitted more that they like Real music they will start making it again.

  • @afterthefox your post made me laugh out loud.. My Dad always played Roger too.. Wonderful to hear him now that my Dad's gone..

  • @afterthefox That's because you've grown up now ..and you realise you listened to crap when you were young

  • what a gentleman

  • I remember in the 1970s seeing a TV ad for Roger Whittaker's greatest hits. In the ad he's referred to as an International Superstar yet neither anyone I knew nor myself had ever heard of him. I believe back then the term "superstar" was as overused/misused as "diva" is today.

  • How true.

  • Спасибо!

  • been in to meny wars to belive in if

  • Really lifted me from sad places many, many times. "If's an illusion." :)

  • R.I.P. Mum, this reminds me so much of you. xxxxxxx

  • mooi en blijft mooi dit hoor je niet meer en wordt ook niet meer gemaakt.... roy

  • an incredible voice and song from one of the best singer/song writers. greatly under-rated.

  • 11 people STILL believe in If, god!

  • This is such a throwback to my childhood! Such memories of sitting in the backseat jamming out to the 8 track with my dad! :)

  • Beautifull :-)

  • His side-burns are so cute. I love this song. Brought me through some very hard emotional times. was a safe haven of comfort. He has a very powerful gift.

  • I'V GROWN UP IN GUYANA AS A GUYANESE AND MY DAD ALWAYSE PLAY ROGER MUSIC AND I LOVE ALL HIS SONG'S DON'T MATTER HOW OLD ALWAYS SO SWEET MAKES ME SO HAPPY THANX ROGER WISH I COULD SEE YOU SOME DAY ..THANX

  • Roger is great. My two kids aged 16 and 13 also enjoys his music so much, they sing along. They play his cd's which suprised me at the time. So it just shows younger generation can also appreciate earlier artists if they are exposed to this type of great music. They enjoy elvis and cliff as well!!!! EXPOSE THE YOUNGER GENERATION !!!!

  • I grew up listening to Roger Whittaker. I've loved his voice and his songs for a looong time. One of the few singer/songwriters who can instantly bring tears to my eyes. He's the BEST.

  • I miss the whistling

  • Find it funny how people will call the song "gay" when they don't know what the song is about.

  • @ImForFreedom

it's the same as bad in this context.

  • @steffen54321 i know, but people don't seem to know the real definition of "gay" anyway...plus the songs not bad they just don't know whats it about

  • @ImForFreedom

The word gay means what you make it out to be.

I don't know what it is about, and I still love it.

  • @steffen54321 gay means happy then people started using it in terms with homos

  • @ImForFreedom

That I DO/did know. I mean I don't know what the SONG is about, and I still like it.

  • @steffen54321 just listen to it and read the lyrics if not ill let you know...

  • @ImForFreedom No.

    Now stop derailing.

  • Find it funny how people will call a song "gay" when they don't even know what its about

  • gay

  • @KristyStarling

    Your face is gay.

  • @KristyStarling Imbecile.

  • One of my favorite singers... really takes me back. Thanks for posting.

  • Roger Whittaker didn't seem to pander to any market niche. He was no Elvis, nor Andy Williams. But,boy, did he sing beautiful songs beautifully. They cut clear into my music palette. No problem!

  • Thank you for this wonderful share.

    Have a nice Sunday, Ine

  • Anyone else reminded of the actor Jean Reno when looking at his eyes?

  • Click on my link & hear FRENZY & All4one..Thnx

  • heb ik ozo veel op gedanst op dit prachtig nummer

    jeugd sentiment hé

    dank je

  • I could listen to this song all day. It is so true.

  • very beautiful song..!! i didn't know roger whittaker had so many songs. When i was in teens in 80s, my brother bought a vinyl record with two songs (45rpm) of roger...'new world in the morning' and the other side, a long title....'take a little something, give a little something'......or so..i used to play the latter so many times. Could anyone please have that song and post it? my bro don't know anything about that song.

  • im only 16 and this song means a lot to me. makes me miss my grandpa. great song :)

  • A talent show!

  • I so love this song... it takes me back to my childhood when my parents used to play Roger Whittaker on their record player and waltz around our living room in Belize. He has such a rich, wonderful voice and the lyrics to this song are so true.

  • This has got to be done in the 70`s for sure?

  • One of the greatest

  • What a velvety voice and wonderful message. Takes me back.

  • great music!

  • thanks for the post. like thefailysimple1 i was going though some albums and i ran into THE LAST FAREWELL Love all those songs on that album thank goodness for youtube and your posting.

  • just wonderfull, thanks for the memories.

  • this is music we grew with rogers voice is superb never get tired of this

  • Thanks for putting this video here. Takes me back years.

  • i always wondered if this song was a responce to the Kipling poem "If" anyone know??

  • Awesome song.

I don't care if anyone disagrees with me I love this song.

  • WFT? Why does he smile as part of his act? Has he not read the lyrics he sings?

  • IMO this is the most moving song he wrote and he's enjoying playing it to an appreciative audience (see 0:52s!). For me it's about compassion for the human condition and illusions we mistake for reality.. then finding our true selves..

Playing it live would be a transcending experience and I believe his bliss is transparent. No act here, or as Antero Alli writes, it's the 'total act' of 'giving yourself over totally to whatever you are doing.'

This clip always takes me to a higher place! :-)

  • Great Song!!!

  • Always good

  • Klasse

  • no he dosen't

  • : )

  • i havent even thought of roger whittaker for a long time, i was just going through some 60's-70's singers, and for some reason his name just popped into my head. some really bad memories come from this era for me, and i guess i blocked them out. i used to listen to his music and song a lot, a real lot, his voice is beautiful. and i am so sad listening again to if, and the lsst farewell, so sad, but, i just want to say, roger, you were, and still are, a beautiful singer, and im glad i found you.

  • i agree with you totaly ..... this and durham town are really good songs
