the cyclists looked to me to be speeding up to get around the officer, first rule: pedestrians first (in other words stop) but the officer also has a duty as all citizens do to avoid collisions, which he didn't and in fact was probably testing the bike rider to see if he would yield or not. The bike rider MUST yield always and obviously he was way too close to the officer before the officer 'pushed back'. Actions by both individuals were in the wrong. If you're going to bike, know the rules.

This guy is the reason I researched about police lies in court, and found out it happened a lot. When I was on jury duty, I was able to educate the other jurors to that fact (using evidence like this) and thankfully the police testimony was ignored.

What this video shows is a bicyclist getting into a protective posture because the pig is going to ram him. On a bicycle if you lower your center of gravity towards an oncoming object the collision with the ground is not as severe. Had he not done this and had been upright, the pig might well have injured him severely.

She was watching towards where he would be coming from.

@111roark I can't speak for cops in NYC, but having worked with the local cops here in Tucson, I can say that TPD cops are good folks. I went on several ride-alongs and saw how they interact with the public, and I never saw any kind of behavior that struck me as unprofessional. Also, there's the fact that the department doesn't tolerate things like that, and the citizen's oversight committee actually gets along with internal affairs and they work together.
What's amazing is that his supervisor wrote the arrest report of the cyclist - and both he and his colleagues claim that he did the right thing! It demonstrates that police believe they can do anything they like, and the law is there to protect their crimes. No wonder the NYPD is internationally famous as violent and corrupt.
Think about the time when there were no cameras all the false convictions and ruin lives, the sins amount clearly to the heavens. God has not forgotten there sins and victims.

The best way for determining such awards would be an anonymous survey, asking for how much money people would be willing to suffer the injury in question, on top of any medical expenses.

This guy is the reason I researched about police lies in court, and found out it happened a lot. When I was on jury duty, I was able to educate the other jurors to that fact (using evidence like this) and thankfully the police testimony was ignored.

What this video shows is a bicyclist getting into a protective posture because the pig is going to ram him. On a bicycle if you lower your center of gravity towards an oncoming object the collision with the ground is not as severe. Had he not done this and had been upright, the pig might well have injured him severely.

As for flipping off the pedestrians and what not, there's no way to know for sure BUT the lady in the pink that's on the left side of the camera was smiling and didn't watch him...last time I flipped someone off, they didn't smile and they stared me down. She was watching towards where he would be coming from.

@hobson8778 Wrong! There are other bicyclists passing at the same time Mr. Long did and they were NOT detained by the other officer. I don't know why the officer chose Mr. Long to knock him down. Maybe the bicyclist showed his fingers or something but the way he was stopped was brutal. That's not the way to stop a guy in a bicycle. He may have suffered a bone fracture.
I wouldn't want to live in a country where policemen act the way that you expect.

@111roark I can't speak for cops in NYC, but having worked with the local cops here in Tucson, I can say that TPD cops are good folks. I went on several ride-alongs and saw how they interact with the public, and I never saw any kind of behavior that struck me as unprofessional. Also, there's the fact that the department doesn't tolerate things like that, and the citizen's oversight committee actually gets along with internal affairs and they work together.

@boskejug most cops are not like this but there is high tolerance for cops like this. they rarely get in trouble. he only got fired because he was caught on video. if no one filmed it, he would be working still. one of the problems is that other cops will cover up what guys like this do.

It looks like he picked someone out at random and knocked them down. He probably thought he would "make an example out of them". Its police officers like that that give all police a bad name. He probably didn't realize he was being videotaped and thought he could just make up whatever story he wanted to afterwards.

I can't understand how some people can condone this, side with the cop & applaud his behavior. The cop just committed assault! That crowd should have made a citizens arrest on him! Let me ask this. If a bicycle cop was riding by, and out of the blue, a person did the exact same thing to that cop, what would happen to that person? I think we all know! So if a cop breaks the law, why should it be any different? People could start consistently arresting cops when they deliberately break the law!
