when i hear this song it makes me cry because i remember the stories of harsh poverty my mother went through. she started picking cotton at the age of 12 in the texas panhandle area during the mid 1950's. she and her parents and brothers and sisters left for california in the mid 1960's and settled there permanently. they are part of a large generation of Tejanos who left Texas in search for a better life. i am proud of my mom for her courage and strength. y que viva la raza!
This song became sort of like the anthem for Mexican American farmworkers of the 1970's and 80's. Now most farmworkers who work the fields of California and Texas and other states are mostly illegal immigrants from Mexico and other countries. The Mexican American farmworker has aged and retired, some are no longer with us, but their children are now some of todays teachers, lawyers, judges, police, etc. and have surpassed the struggles and sufferings of their parents. I am grateful to them.
@scannercommuniKtions Well said. The struggles and the suffering we went through were not in vain. Each generation unlocks the door for those that come after. My father could not read nor write, but his grandson is now in an Ivy League school. I can't hear this song without thinking of those long summers spent working in the hot sun, but it also reminds me of the spirit of those who did so with the hope that it would allow their kids to make it. I am also grateful to them.
