I'd assume that it would be because being that tall and seeming assertive can be quite intimidating. I wouldn't think it's racial. Well, where i'm from it's only the older people that are racist, the ones my ages don't even notice race when describing someone. I think that's quite nice.

the reason why you might be getting rejected is some businesses now are trying not just to umm focse on the man and also draw the woman in the coversation cause back in the day it was all the man they where the top, but completly leaveing you out was alittle crazy.
It happens to my husband and myself too. He is the primary speaker and the personwe are speaking to always direct their full attention to me. My husband's reasoning for why women do it, is to reduce any potential conflict with a woman who may be the jealous type. Why men do it, it has to be because I am a woman. Infact, I can go to the store with my husband and a man will offer to take my bags to the car, etc. My husband asked why don't he get serviced like that?!

I personally address who ever is more outspoken but I know when me and my fiancee go out to eat somewhere they always talk to him and try to joke with him but that's not who he is I'm the loud outspoken one I address people and I joke and I'm friendly he's kind of got this "go away" attitude lol I'm not really sure why that is I notice more in mixed couples they tend to speak to the woman whether she's black, white, Chinese etc it's usually the woman :\ except with me lol!!!

I work in a restaurant, and when a man and a woman come in, i usually speak to the woman first, (usually because some girls get mad when you talk to their boyfriends) but I never ignore either one.
This is a new one on me. When I'm out with others I'm more than happy to let the others be the spokesperson for the group, or couple. Occaisionally I'm with people who also are uncomfortable being spokespersons. That's when I'll step up as the spokesperson. Lisa has piercing eyes. I'm guessing this is what draws people to her.
There seems to be alot of people agreeing on attributing this to how gorgeous Lisa is, but come on guys, Iman is utterly gorgeous as well! (haha sorry guys I know you probably hate it when random people hit on both of you on here, but it is what it is)

its not about lisa getting attention, its about the feeling of being disrespected, which a lot of couples who are not known or famous, who have already stated in these comments how they could relate to this situation.
As a woman, I usually talk to the woman because I feel more comfortable with them, but if it was in a work setting, I'd try to speak to both and then gravitate toward whoever was doing more talking just to simplify things. When I used to go out with my ex, I was usually the one being addressed even though I am a minority and my ex is white...but maybe that's only because you can tell he is uber gross just by looking at him lol Maybe it's not racial discrimination but facial discrimination.

I'm so glad Iman brought this subject up. My partner and I also thought this was just us and it turns out that it happens to so many IR couples. It amazes me how people don't even know when they are making judgments and being racist. That's why it makes me so mad when people say racism is dead etc... no it is not! There are subconscious behaviors that still happen. So the thing is we need to speak on this more and make people aware that it IS happening even tho they may not consciously know it!
Oh guys, it's interesting u say this as J and I experience this all the time. And guess what, we are an IR couple also. I'm white, he's black. I don't think it's a couples thing... it's a racism thing. I can pretty much guarantee that if u where a white man, you would be the one being addressed. It's something we've observed over the time we've been together.
BTW I also want to say that when I was with a white guy this never happened. My partner was ALWAYS the one first addressed and rarely was I addressed/acknowledged first. So I see BLATANTLY that this happens when I am in an IR situation. I am always the one looked at and addressed and he is not really regarded or spoken to directly. Also, I my Black partner if pulled over will get asked 'who's car is this' my white partner never had that happen. Racism is still very much alive in the US.

I think people are less intimidated by females. One of my friends that worked as a server (female at that) was told she had to address the males first even if the females spoke first. The restaurant was forcing servers to address males since nautrally people address females.

That happens to myself and my black boyfriend all the time too. (I'm white) And it bothers me greatly because he speaks for us and I don't like being addressed when it's obvious that he's trying to. I would rather he speak for us both but customer service people constantly address me instead.

My female friend and me were both foreign exchange students from 2 different countries. we were sitting in cafeteria, then 3 ppl came to me and were like "Hi" to me at first, cuz they knew I'm exchange student but didn't know my female friend was the same too. they chill to me a bit, then I introduced my female friend to them, and they just seemed more curious about her, started addressing to her a lot like something was wrong with me : /

Me and my husband have the EXACT same issue.
We frequently get asked "are you together?" when we are ordering things or when the check comes. People frequently address him only when we are out but when that happens, he'll quickly say,"well my wife......" and then brings me into the equation.
People are shocked that we still get treated in such a way. I would hate to believe that it's a racial issue also, but it's so blatant and disrespectful that it's hard to see it another way.

I'm a female and I'm married, in a biracial relationship bw/wm and it's either because they think she's really pretty, or they think it's respectful to address the woman first or maybe it's racist. I've had people look at me and an ex boyfriend weird just bc we were a biracial couple but that happened in the Hamptons. you shouldn't have a problem with biracial couplage in California, at all. Did it happen there or in Florida?

Northern Cali is pretty racist still. I wonder about SoCal... it happens everywhere. When my bm partner and I are out on tour, it happens in pretty much every town we go to in the States. also when going out to eat and everything, servers generally feel more comfortable addressing women it's assumed women are friendlier but if YOU are the one who calls someone over they should be talking to you especially if they say "hello miss" to your lady and YOU again answer Idk about that one on your end :/ but it's almost completely opposite for me I hate it

I personally address who ever is more outspoken but I know when me and my fiancee go out to eat somewhere they always talk to him and try to joke with him but that's not who he is I'm the loud outspoken one I address people and I joke and I'm friendly he's kind of got this "go away" attitude lol I'm not really sure why that is I notice more in mixed couples they tend to speak to the woman whether she's black, white, Chinese etc it's usually the woman :\ except with me lol!!!

I work in a restaurant, and when a man and a woman come in, i usually speak to the woman first, (usually because some girls get mad when you talk to their boyfriends) but I never ignore either one.

This is a new one on me. When I'm out with others I'm more than happy to let the others be the spokesperson for the group, or couple. Occaisionally I'm with people who also are uncomfortable being spokespersons. That's when I'll step up as the spokesperson. Lisa has piercing eyes. I'm guessing this is what draws people to her.

I know it's kinda redundant but, I think one look in the mirror will explain it all. You are like ..... 6'0" maybe 6'2" you could be intimidating, oh did I mention that you are a black man. I get that, too. I think it is a bit of both. I hate to say it but, it's the only reason I can think of. It's not just race though. I've gone to lunch with my bosses and co-workers. The server assumed I was paying because I was the only guy there, handed me the check. But, never spoke on the way in.

When they do see it on the paper along with Lisa's, like in the airport, they don't call it out because they don't know how to pronounce it and would get embarrassed or offend you.
That seems to be the reason why for the airport problem that just happened, as I didn't know how to pronounce your name either until I heard it out loud.

The ticket agent was so wrong though I would have got upset. He might have been upset a black man was dating a white girl or he was trying to pick her. It could be many things like when you go out to dinner the female is addressed more often I have noticed.

As a woman, I usually talk to the woman because I feel more comfortable with them, but if it was in a work setting, I'd try to speak to both and then gravitate toward whoever was doing more talking just to simplify things. When I used to go out with my ex, I was usually the one being addressed even though I am a minority and my ex is white...but maybe that's only because you can tell he is uber gross just by looking at him lol Maybe it's not racial discrimination but facial discrimination.

I'm so glad Iman brought this subject up. My partner and I also thought this was just us and it turns out that it happens to so many IR couples. It amazes me how people don't even know when they are making judgments and being racist. That's why it makes me so mad when people say racism is dead etc... no it is not! There are subconscious behaviors that still happen. So the thing is we need to speak on this more and make people aware that it IS happening even tho they may not consciously know it!

I don't think it's a couples thing... it's a racism thing. I can pretty much guarantee that if u where a white man, you would be the one being addressed. It's something we've observed over the time we've been together.

BTW I also want to say that when I was with a white guy this never happened. My partner was ALWAYS the one first addressed and rarely was I addressed/acknowledged first. So I see BLATANTLY that this happens when I am in an IR situation. I am always the one looked at and addressed and he is not really regarded or spoken to directly. Also, I my Black partner if pulled over will get asked 'who's car is this' my white partner never had that happen. Racism is still very much alive in the US.

ahahah that's is funny but weird at the sane time. But it is not only happening to couples I think. When I was with my father in the store and we were looking for stuff for his car (my dad is like 49 years older than me) and we went to ask something to the staff and I asked the question he kinda looks at me with a face like "what the hell you know?!" and then answer to my dad like he asked and walk away with him to show him were it is and ignore me!!! I think people are less intimidated by females. One of my friends that worked as a server (female at that) was told she had to address the males first even if the females spoke first. The restaurant was forcing servers to address males since nautrally people address females.
