The truth as I see it: who the best drummer is will always be in debate. It depends on your age and level of emotional attachment to a particular kind of music. I suppose, if I was a teenager, or someone in my twenties, I might think that Travis Barker is the fastest drummer ever - but I know better. The Dynamic Loonies, Mr. Buddy Rich, Ian Paice, etc. were easily as fast, if not faster than Travis Barker - for instance.
@loufromperu65 Yes you are correct. I think people also over look potential. Most of the drummers you hear about have peaked their potential and maintain it (unless you are neil peart). Aside from neil, i think bonham was the best drummer to play rock music. Considering his age and how well he played really shows that he could have been something special at this point in time. People compare bonham to all the greats, but bonham is dead, and the others arent or were older. One way to look at it
The big 3 of drummers for me will always be Buddy Rich, Keith Moon, and Mr. John Henry Bonham. Also on that record I previously mentioned, you hear Keith Moon grabbing the mic and saying: "Go John go, whip Buddy Rich's ass. That tells me that the "Dynamic Loonies" were very aware of Mr. Buddy Rich, whom I believe to be the true master of the drums. I am, however also a huge fan of Ian Paice from Deep Purple, and Mitch Mitchell from The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
Some of the best drumming I've ever heard in my life on record was from John Bonham and Keith Moon. It came from this very tour in 1977. I got a bootleg on multicolored vinyl called: Live in the LA Forum: For Badge Holders Only. On this recording: Out On The Tiles into John Bohham's solo, introduced by Keith Moon. It appears that Keith Moon joins in on the kettle drums. You talk about amazing. For sure, there is no one drummer that can pull off what these 2 did on that record.
Woah! That was awesome. What I particularly like about JB is he's so laid back when druming, as if he's just having fun, and performs some truly inimitable drum beats and melodies. He doesn't play with painful intensity and madness like so many other drummers, whose solos are half drum bashing, half constipated facial expressions.
Attention Drummers/musicians!!! Get the book "realistic rock" by Carmine Appice!! If you like 60's-70's rock drumming it's the Bible. It turned my hopeless brother into a real rock guy. He would work on it every day and half way through the book and after learning the first Zeppelin record beat for beat he would go back to the jams and sound exactly like Simon Kirk of Free and Bad Company...with bonham fills to boot. It could save rock drumming im serious. Amazon.com
What youre all missing is the jazz influence. Bonzo played around the beat like the great jazz drummers. Ginger Baker (who was also a huge influence) did it as well. Listen to the album called "Steamin' With The Miles Davis Quintet" from 1956. The drummer is Philly Joe Jones. You will hear what I'm talking about. Also the drumming from very early James Brown influenced Bonzo. The guy was amazing and is well known for his raw power but all the little things he was doing made him great.
got to look the guy from deep purple first did the thing where he used the high hat with out hitting it he did it in one song for about 30 seconds bonham heard it and thought it was the coolest shit ever and he started useing it all the time hints moby dick he mastered that sound granted there was alot of drummers that was his influences so to speak but he took what he heard and mastered them a great drummer
TO bgj150 ! You can sit here on YouTube all you want and pontific your pathetic opinion of John Henry Bonham, but your opinion holds little weight in the world. Those are multiple combinations of about 32 seperate rudiments - then multiplexed across the tom and floor toms and incorporating the bass drum in and out. He has control of both hemispheres of his brain! Later on he pounds out the tympani and pounds with his hands! Your opinion holds no merit! Bonzo's catalogue of work is amazing!
@JohnBindon sorry john boy.......sorry to tell the truth..i guess the truth hurts some people, and unfortunaley your one of them...bonham played great on songs'' or in the studio'' as a soloist not at all...they are sooo many better then him..... hes looked at as being better then he was because he was in the great led zeppelin... im not saying he was bad...by no means...but wasnt as good as people made him out to be....
@bgj150 In reality, John Bonham played better live, than he ever did in the studio. It depends on the show. I'm fairly certain, you haven't come close to hearing everything that he played. ah, by the year 1977 i know john was using a 15' x 12' rack tom and by the video it looks like one of the rare occasions were bonham had 18' x 16' & 20' x 18' floor toms instead of his usual 16' x 16' and 18' x 16'
Yes Buddy Rich... Rich's technique has been one of the most standardized and coveted in drumming. His dexterity, musicality of playing style, speed and smooth execution are considered "holy grails" of drum technique and have been considered almost next to impossible to duplicate
@1VISHIOUS So many great drummers over the years.Buddy Rich was sometimes amazing but my personal favourite is Mel Taylor from the Ventures.Check out their performance of Caravan in the 1966 Ventures special in japan.
@doabe1. Well said. May not have been the most technical drummer or fastest (although he was up there) but NOBODY has ever had a deeper pocket (groove) IMO. I've been playing to Zep albums all my life, and there's nobody your gonna learn more from than Bonzo
@doable1 very true man, Bonzo was the powerhouse behind Led Zeppelin, he was their secret weapon, they wud never have been as good without his feel for the groove and of course those legendary triplets
Bonzo did a drum solo at every show. There must be more vids of his work.
One of the greatest rock drummers, ever!
(Moon, Mitch Mitchell, Bonham, Tommy Aldridge, Carmine Appice, Billy Cobham-jazz, too-Ringo-his basic beat and high hat-Ginger Baker-again the jazz thing s there-Michael Shrieve)
bonham was the best...there are more technically sound guys in death metal and other shit but drums are about rythym, abidextruousness and trance... and NO one did this like Bonham so far that I've ever herd.
don't forget janice joplin, jimi hendrix, both drug related deaths. I think what made bonham so great was all you said about his ability to end songs, and his style, plus his increadably fast foot. he played a single bass with a single pedal and made it sound like a double bass...back when no one was doing heel toe technique. he practicaly invented it
anyone who thinks they can play like bonham is bullshitting. he can move both his feet faster than hell, he only uses a double kick at a fewgigs but never recording". how many of you bastards can drumrole with one foot. im a crappy drummer but he is my idol and i get a little bit better everytime i listen to him
@novedekne nobody is gonna be able to do something like a double bass roll on a single pedal. its just not gonna happen. the technique he used on the single pedal was the slide technique, but it was modified. what he did, and what anyone can do, is that once you get adept at sliding, u dont have to slide anymore. u just bounce the pedal and use the momentum of the pedal to get that double hit.
@stacy208 (part 2) to get the triple hit, the third note of the triplet with your single bass pedal, u just drop the the heel on the bass of the pedal. or u could pull your foot back down the pedal which also can achieve this third hit, but thats another story. also if u want to do fast 16th notes with one foot, jojo mayer goes into detail on that or u could just do the steve smith constant release, which wasnt called that in bonham's time, but was probably what he used anyway.

Time Machine I hear ya - simple is best at least to the listeners ears. I have always been in awe of buddys awesome chops but could never really hear what he was doing it was so astonishingly complex. Bonzo was more in line with Krupa - drum sounds for the working man!

Theres no argument, Buddy Rich is the greatest drummer to ever walk the earth. Bonham, Peart and Smith are great but nowhere near Rich. Actually, this solo is quite boring!
i gotta agree man, buddy rich was one bad ass...mainly cuz he was one of the earliest ones, or pioneers that was doing what he was doing. Jus like any sport greater athletes come but u gotta honor the first ones as the best, because they inspired others to be greater. There really is no BEST.
me and my friend John (Zeplin fan) are in an arguement.. Who's better JOHN BONHAM or NEIL PEART. and whoever you decide from that, who's better, JOHN BONHAM or STEVE SMITH. and WHOEVER YOU THINK, or BUDDY RICH!
I actually have this concert on dvd, it is almost 4 hrs long chock full of solos by everyone but Plant...The drum solo is about 20 minutes long and although it may not be one of his best it is very EPIC to say the least.. oh and btw they butchered stairway at this show..
are you a mental case fuck you and die young..plant..page.bonhan,jones..the greatest musicians who ever walked this earth..how dare you disrespect them......

ZEP mates didn't call him PERCY for no reason, what a poser !!!!!!!.jones nee' john baldwin, and bonham were the most original of the lot. willie dixon sued the pants off these british walker boys and won for stealing songs. page was better as a session player, and playing with the yARdBirds. needs to learn to use his pinkie and quit being a run of the mill copycat guitarist. kudos for being a fan of ricky nelson and JAMES BURTON. cease your anger, and chill out !!!!!
uh dude that's kinda creepy man they're good alive too you think Jimmy doesn't rock out anymore? He's a frickin guitar wizard now he's like Gandalf with a guitar
One of the best. Oddly enough, had it not been for Bonham, I probably wouldn't be half the guitarist I am today. Drum solos are one thing but what set Bonham apart from the rest aside from his unorthodox technique was his killer fills at the end of phrases in Zeps music. Pure genius. Drums were an instrument to Bonham, not just something to pound on or keep time.
@doable1 That's right - what set him apart was the whole enchilada. The fills, the grooves he invented, the solos, and THE WAY HE PLAYED THEM. It was visceral, neural, it was in his bones and muscles.
@Vahagnll He sounded good, was solid as a rock. But he didn't really "invent" anything. The beats he played are the basic beats, rudiments you learn. His "big bottom" bass drum sound came courtesy of Carmine Appice who was a big influence on Bonham.( Zep opened for his band Vanilla Fudge early on) Bonham even went as far as to get a (rarely seen) double bass drum kit just like Carmines. Appice is the true founder of heavy bottom in hard rock. Bonham gets all the props though.
@GalaxyRover1020 I know he was influenced by Appice and that Appice could historically speaking be a more pioneering drummer than Bonham. Bonham was influenced by many other pioneering drummers (Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, some latin-style drummers). This is natural. However he did come up with some very original stuff himself. Unless you think that a groove cannot be invented, he invented many good ones. "When the Levee Breaks", "Achilles Last Stand", "Fool in the Rain", etc.
@Vahagnll No doubt he was a fine drummer. Carmine himself respects John Bonham very highly. And it's refreshing that all the tunes you name checked aren't the usual played out Zep tunes.
I just think (for my taste at least) there were far superior underrated drummers from that era. Deep Purple's Ian Paice comes to mind.
@GalaxyRover1020 so let me get this straight- you don't think john bonham is the greatest drummer of all time? if you think ian paice is underrated, i don't think we're talking about the same ian paice. he pretty much sits at the bottom of the totem-pole where he belongs. he can go fast. that's about it. john bonham was the most well-rounded drummer of all time. and if it's material you're lacking... then we have a whole different conversation here.
@zaneman35 - Paice on the bottom of the totem pole? NEVER heard anyone every bad mouth his playing. Oh well, you're entitled and obviously a Bonham diehard. See here's the thing, a drummer like Paice can play any genre fluently with skill. Bonham i have never heard play jazz etc. He had his trademark heavy simplistic heavy bottom that's about it as technique. Sorry ,but like you I'm entitled to my opinion.
@GalaxyRover1020 because he wasn't in a jazz band, although he does have a real swing feel. i'm confident that he could have played drums of any genre. i know we are all entitled to our opinions, and i don't think i'm gonna be able to change anyone's mind here. so i guess we should just agree to disagree.
@bman546 - Very well aware of Joe Morello. He was a resident where I'm from and my bassist friend jammed with him @ a party and another drummer friend took lessons from him. I dunno know I recall Appice getting name checked quite often as his main influence. Many are "influenced" by others,it's when you actually "hear' it in their playing that counts imo. I hear plenty of Appice, no Morello.Which is rather interesting as Morello was a big influence on Carmine.
@doable1 I couldn't agree more with you! I am a student, disciple and believer of Led Zeppelin. The way each song and improvised passage are linked together by their energy is phenomenal, beyond words! I tune and strive to play in the manner of Bonzo, it does however also require a guitarist/songwriter of equal prowess and ability to pull it off!
it isn't wasnt the alcohol that killed them, over doin' in a huge way killed them , except for Kurt Cobain, we're all reletively certain that bitch Courtney Love killed him ;) and the rock and roll lifestyle has been known to be harsh on people, I think more that the lifestyle killed 'em.... the drugs and alcohol was merely the tool they used , unfortunate the greats died that way but, at least we had them for a time , and will always have tape , LP, CD and Video so they can live forever thru us
@twelvefingered well its never gonna change...or go away its apart of the culture with bands...it was an accident with bonham , name a band that dosnt take drugs or alcohol.?
Bonham is absolutely brilliant, and a truly magical player. Nobody else even comes close to his level in rock music, and few do in jazz with the exception of Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa who "Bonzo" idolized.
james89027 nobody gives a fuck how you learned to suck ass at drums or how fast you think you are, not that it matters anyway. you will never have half the talent bonham had so go eat shit you fucking cock jockey
You idiot, playing fast isn't a measure of drumming prowess. Any thrash metal drummer is fast, but couldn't match Bonham for power, musicality or innovation. And, his right foot was pretty fast when appropriate - with only a single pedal - how many 'fast' drummers do likewise?
You suck dick it doesn't matter how fast you can go any drummer can go fast. Boham is one of the best drummers ever. I bet you couldn't do that with one foot. So fuck of.
if u think ur so good, why wont u upload a video of yourself playing the drums? u said u r better than the greatest drummer of all time, so i want to see.
I was at this show and even though I'm a huge Zep and Bonham fan, This concert was a letdown after seeing them in their prime. All of them except John Paul Jones was having massive personal problems.
yea and at tthat came with the creation of disco and punk well....i did not live that era but acording to wat ive heard n read the zeppelin where at that time on their decending.....with disco and punk taking over...nowdays to young ppl zeppelin is as populare as any new band...ans increasing with as they go older
Everyone show some fucking respect. Who cares what the guy looked like in the last few years. Focus more on his skills rather than looks, or is that what being a musician is all about now?
tiernan is rite john bonham could be 600 ponds and still be the greatest drummer he could be freckin mental and to me that would make him even more better
By that, do you mean his physical appearance or drumming capabilities? I for one think that his drumming capabilities grew with his age- i.e. In My Time Of Dying, Achilles Last Stand, Kashmir, In The Evening, and Bonzo's Montreux. He did have some incredible solos and works early on, too, but as he progressed in age, it seems as though his drumming became heavier, faster, and more epic in a way.
Cool guy, but he dressed like he was a fucking hill billy. lmao

Yes Buddy Rich... Rich's technique has been one of the most standardized and coveted in drumming. His dexterity, musicality of playing style, speed and smooth execution are considered "holy grails" of drum technique and have been considered almost next to impossible to duplicate

I think your right. I was jamming to Led Zep and teling my brother how great
Bonham was. He told me to check out Buddy Rich and I was Blown away.

don't forget janice joplin, jimi hendrix, both drug related deaths. I think what made bonham so great was all you said about his ability to end songs, and his style, plus his increadably fast foot. he played a single bass with a single pedal and made it sound like a double bass...back when no one was doing heel toe technique. he practicaly invented it

novedekne 1 year ago
@novedekne nobody is gonna be able to do something like a double bass roll on a single pedal. its just not gonna happen. the technique he used on the single pedal was the slide technique, but it was modified. what he did, and what anyone can do, is that once you get adept at sliding, u dont have to slide anymore. u just bounce the pedal and use the momentum of the pedal to get that double hit.
stacy208 1 year ago
@stacy208 (part 2) to get the triple hit, the third note of the triplet with your single bass pedal, u just drop the the heel on the bass of the pedal. or u could pull your foot back down the pedal which also can achieve this third hit, but thats another story. also if u want to do fast 16th notes with one foot, jojo mayer goes into detail on that or u could just do the steve smith constant release, which wasnt called that in bonham's time, but was probably what he used anyway.
stacy208 1 year ago

goodygoody23 2 years ago 2
One of the best. Oddly enough, had it not been for Bonham, I probably wouldn't be half the guitarist I am today. Drum solos are one thing but what set Bonham apart from the rest aside from his unorthodox technique was his killer fills at the end of phrases in Zeps music. Pure genius. Drums were an instrument to Bonham, not just something to pound on or keep time.
doable1 2 years ago 23
nice. drums should be treated as such. An instrument.
paradiddle1389 2 years ago 3
Bonham has influenced my guitar playing too. Can't explain it really.
MrDrProfessorJrMD 2 years ago
@doable1 That's right - what set him apart was the whole enchilada. The fills, the grooves he invented, the solos, and THE WAY HE PLAYED THEM. It was visceral, neural, it was in his bones and muscles.
Vahagnll 1 year ago
@Vahagnll He sounded good, was solid as a rock. But he didn't really "invent" anything. The beats he played are the basic beats, rudiments you learn. His "big bottom" bass drum sound came courtesy of Carmine Appice who was a big influence on Bonham.( Zep opened for his band Vanilla Fudge early on) Bonham even went as far as to get a (rarely seen) double bass drum kit just like Carmines. Appice is the true founder of heavy bottom in hard rock. Bonham gets all the props though.
GalaxyRover1020 8 months ago
@GalaxyRover1020 I know he was influenced by Appice and that Appice could historically speaking be a more pioneering drummer than Bonham. Bonham was influenced by many other pioneering drummers (Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, some latin-style drummers). This is natural. However he did come up with some very original stuff himself. Unless you think that a groove cannot be invented, he invented many good ones. "When the Levee Breaks", "Achilles Last Stand", "Fool in the Rain", etc.
Vahagnll 8 months ago
@Vahagnll No doubt he was a fine drummer. Carmine himself respects John Bonham very highly. And it's refreshing that all the tunes you name checked aren't the usual played out Zep tunes.
I just think (for my taste at least) there were far superior underrated drummers from that era. Deep Purple's Ian Paice comes to mind.
GalaxyRover1020 8 months ago
@GalaxyRover1020 so let me get this straight- you don't think john bonham is the greatest drummer of all time? if you think ian paice is underrated, i don't think we're talking about the same ian paice. he pretty much sits at the bottom of the totem-pole where he belongs. he can go fast. that's about it. john bonham was the most well-rounded drummer of all time. and if it's material you're lacking... then we have a whole different conversation here.
zaneman35 6 months ago
@zaneman35 - Paice on the bottom of the totem pole? NEVER heard anyone every bad mouth his playing. Oh well, you're entitled and obviously a Bonham diehard. See here's the thing, a drummer like Paice can play any genre fluently with skill. Bonham i have never heard play jazz etc. He had his trademark heavy simplistic heavy bottom that's about it as technique. Sorry ,but like you I'm entitled to my opinion.
GalaxyRover1020 6 months ago
@GalaxyRover1020 because he wasn't in a jazz band, although he does have a real swing feel. i'm confident that he could have played drums of any genre. i know we are all entitled to our opinions, and i don't think i'm gonna be able to change anyone's mind here. so i guess we should just agree to disagree.
zaneman35 6 months ago
@GalaxyRover1020
Bonham's biggest influence was the great Jazz drummer Joe Morello, so any thoughts he couldn't or didn't play jazz are ridiculous.
bman546 5 months ago
@bman546 - Very well aware of Joe Morello. He was a resident where I'm from and my bassist friend jammed with him @ a party and another drummer friend took lessons from him. I dunno know I recall Appice getting name checked quite often as his main influence. Many are "influenced" by others,it's when you actually "hear' it in their playing that counts imo. I hear plenty of Appice, no Morello.Which is rather interesting as Morello was a big influence on Carmine.
GalaxyRover1020 5 months ago

@doable1 I couldn't agree more with you! I am a student, disciple and believer of Led Zeppelin. You idiot, playing fast isn't a measure of drumming prowess. Any thrash metal drummer is fast, but couldn't match Bonham for power, musicality or innovation. And, his right foot was pretty fast when appropriate - with only a single pedal - how many 'fast' drummers do likewise?

By that, do you mean his physical appearance or drumming capabilities? I for one think that his drumming capabilities grew with his age- i.e. In My Time Of Dying, Achilles Last Stand, Kashmir, In The Evening, and Bonzo's Montreux. He did have some incredible solos and works early on, too, but as he progressed in age, it seems as though his drumming became heavier, faster, and more epic in a way.
