Why dont you try to paint it? probably cost you 20$ to do it. Just sand the parts with a light grid sand paper or use steel wool. then use a light color paint like tan and go over it with some acrylic black or dark brown paints making the grain then just use a wood finish on it.

That canteen, my frend, is a Russian canteen. I'm not sure if it's a remake of the WW2 canteen or the actual thing, because of the lighting, but I'm almost positive that it is Russian. The chained top, the X on the back for the belt, and the sincle button on the front all point to a Russian canteen.
