I saw this live in 1963 and thought they seemed very nervous. It was such a stuffy occasion and I think they were surprised how well they won over the flunkies. After this, the Royal Variety Performance became less formal and poncy.
Well, it proves one thing and that is how so much younger we all were in 1963 (I was 16 and a half when this went out on television and I'm 64 and a half now). We thought The Beatles were totally fabulous and when they broke onto the pop scene like a huge tornado, there'd never been anything like them before...ever. They all had talent with a capital "T" and we'll never see their like again. There's nothing remotely like them today, that's for sure!
Well people - by watching this video you are looking at one of my first memories - it was a big deal in my house ...and I remember - despite being 5 years of age - everyone was around the TV waiting for the show to finish and the Beatles to come on. I banged my little tin drum all the way thru!! Yes it was a bit theatrical, that's the way it was then - it was of its time. BTW is the Prince of Wales Theatre the same as the Palladium? I still dont get the "Sophie Tucker" joke - can anyone explain?
They dont half like to wiggle! Paul's head goes crazy, ringo nods to his beats, Georges guitar is up and down up and down, johns the only one that seems to be able to keep still!
@cluciano63 Now when older people are there, I tie them into their seats, and force-feed them Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" at 300 watts. That rings their bells for sure.
No, sorry, she wasn't. On that day duties fell to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, not Elizabeth II. It's the QM we see acknowledging Lennon's comment.
A perfect performance by a perfect band makes me proud to come from Liverpool - Great shout from John - please check out my new song "Hero In The Hearr" written for all the british soldiers on my channel Subscribe - Like - Comment please... Thank You
Beatleboy well ill answer for our queen, before the Beatles we only had a queen but now we have four kings as well what you got to say now not a lot i bet.....they don't sing twist n shout they sing (pissed on stout) i hope that answered your ?....... Allen. UK..(England)
When "Twist and Shout" first came out some of us kids could only play it when our parents weren't home. It was too raunchy for them. So tell me about your "totally uncool" parents. Haha!
fucking class and charisma to say some like this in front of the best monarchy in the world, the english one, this april big time wedding in london, 29th april, john wiston lennon class man, elvis is the king but the beatles the best r&r band in the universe.
Sick shit!! the best rock&roll band for life!!! just came back from london, abbey road studios, abbey road street, crazy man, in my blood for life, the beatles, going to liverpool again next week. got to get beatles oxigen once again. I can die in peace now.
Damn, this is historic! John Lennon so looks the part of the leader of the Best Band in the World doing his bloody best for Her Majesty The Queen of England. He looks so professional and relaxed and powerful yet remote. He looks as if he is actually controlling everything.
Dig George playing octaves on the From Me To You solo. What an innovator!
everytime john lennon sang twist and shout his face always had a specific look almost like a cry for help , well clearly we couldnt help him :'( RIP john you will be forever loved and missed !!
Hehe...Paul and that Sophie Tucker line was funny. Till There Was You was an interesting choice of song but considering the audience a wise choice because it signalled to the "parents" of their fans that they are not just a rawcus electric rock group...then follow it with Twist & Shout...brilliant!
Ive been playing guitar for many years and grew up on zeppelin, rush, etc... always loved the beatles but never thought of them as a technical band....until I saw this version of till there was you. George was a very very talented player, he earned every dime of being in that group. Excellent chords and playing inversions, suspended chords, etc....
@baronsting When Till There Was You was first released, many thought they had hired a session musician. George was voted best guitarist in England when he was 17!
Paul is in his moment during "Til There Was You." It's like he was auditioning for his chance to be a member of this audience. He won. He's now rattling his jewelry. It's been well earned. Very well earned. Well done.
Maybe I'm missing something, but John's guitar doesnt sound like its plugged in. Especially in Till There Was You, I can only hear George's lead guitar work
Just take a look at John's face when he makes his famous remark about the jewelry. I think noone before dared to say something like that in front of The Queen. But they were already on top and got away with anything. Also watch how George plays the "Gretty chord" in his solo for Till there was you......
@carlosbettanin George would be 20, Paul would be 21, and Ringo and John would be (John only just, his birthday is in October, Ringo's is July) 22. Just kids, really.
@carlosbettanin In November of '63, George would be 20, Paul would be 21, Ringo and John just 22 (Ringo's birthday is in July, and John's is in October, I believe).
@5COT5MAN She was pregnant with Prince Edward at the time, and it wouldn't do for Her Majesty to be seen in a "delicate condition" in front of her subjects! In fact, the Palace press office put out an announcement saying that the Queen was in an "interesting" condition and would not be undertaking any official engagements for 6 months.
I love how nervous they are when they're doing their introductions. If they're not nervous, and out of breath, they're horrid people. I'm glad that they're not. (This is just one of the many pieces of proof out there.)
they are performing for the queen so if they messed up its to the dungeon. you can sorta tell that jhon is nervous cause if you look carefully he is sweating
I know that that is the urban legend but at this stage in their career Lennon would never have said that:He knew he was on to a good thing and it was only a year or so since they had decided to wear suits.I dont doubt that he said that he was gonna do it in the dressing room for a laugh and to wind the others up.
This is a great Beatles video - whoever managed to save this for us should be 'knighted' - watch it all and particularly at 4:45 when John makes his famous "rattle your jewelries" comment - classic John Lennon humor. Then he proceeds to lead the band in a rockin' out version of 'Twist and Shout'. Never better.
I remember watching them on Ed Sullivan - my grandpa called them "hippies" -look at them, short hair and wearing suites and ties - LOL - how times have changed! hehehehe
This event happened 18 days before the assassaination of President John F. Kennedy. One month later, Capitol Records decided to release "I Want To Hold Your Hand", and in January 1964, Beatles manager Brian Epstein, decided to bring the Fab Four to the USA in order to help the country get over the loss of President Kennedy. Although they appeared on a clip of "The Jack Paar Show", it wouldn't be until the Beatles appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show that Beatlemania took off.
@Jaybird1103 "manager Brian Epstein, decided to bring the Fab Four to the USA in order to help the country get over the loss of President Kennedy." That's nonsense. Ed Sullivan happened to be going through Heathrow airport in Oct. 63 when The Beatles were returning from Sweden and he saw "Bealtemania" first hand. So Sullivan booked them after their trip to Paris in Jan. '64. The reason for The Beatles success was because "I Want to Hold Your Hand" became No. 1 and the country was coming out of
Enjoy this while you can. With a release of the Beatles remastered catalog coming in September, the powers that be are sure to shut down most of YT's posted Beatles videos. It's a shame really. It's not like fans won't buy them just because there here.
Notice how John pauses just before making his famous "rattle your jewelry" remark. To sing a line such as "...Shake It Up! Baby..." in 1963 was a pretty daring thing to do before royalty - let alone before H.M.The Queen Mother. John might have sought to diffuse the tension - both Paul and John look nervous on the video. An example of John's wit at his best - he didn't offend anyone, and managed to get away with it. You can even see The Queen Mother glancing away... it took her by surprise!
Paul was very nervous because back stage before the show John told Paul that he intended to say "and will the rest of you just rattle your f_ _ _ _ _ _ jewelry" so Paul nearly had a heart attack back stage before the show and was not sure John would not do it-And actually the Beatles were all big fans of the 3 Stooges and took the Ah, Ah,Ah with the John, Paul and George in Twist and Shout from the Stooges-
No Jaybird, the haircuts came from a German girl named Astrid Kercherr who cut their hair for them in 1962 during their stay in Hamburg-Stu Sutcliffe, the Beatles bassist at the time who was no good but a great pal of John's fell in love and married Astrid-It was she who introduced the hair styles to the Beatles-John was the last to accept it-
@BOZO32851 Stu didn't marry Astrid, he died from a rare condition that caused his brain to expand, he was rushed into hospital but died in the ambulance in Astrids arms. :(
@BOZO32851 That's absurd, the AH, AH, AH vocal part is in the original version by the Isley Brothers, which the Beatles covered. Your explanation is BS. Honestly, i can't believe some of the patent nonsense people subscribe to when talking about The Beatles. If anything, John loved Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers, and the Goons-(who George Martin also produced)-which is one of the reasons why The Beatles liked George Martin.
They sang far away from the mics. As a sound man I can say the mics prolly picked up alot of the drums and guitars too. Today, that's a no no. But, I wasn't even born then, so what do I know, But, the Beats rule.
Look at 0:52 when ringo gets a boost of confidence and shows off with a loud drum beat at 0:54 or 0:55 . THEN look at paul and george they can tell hes showing off and cant help but smile at it. OMG RINGO IS ADORABLE
if thats his showing off then he's worse than i thought lol. in my opinion the band are great but ringo is awful, no offence. i play drums and to be honest people who say he's the best drummer in the world are mad.. lol
I saw this live in 1963 and thought they seemed very nervous. It was such a stuffy occasion and I think they were surprised how well they won over the flunkies. After this, the Royal Variety Performance became less formal and poncy.

I like the moment, when they pull the cables out from the guitars, and taking the microphones, two steps back.

Enjoy this while you can. With a release of the Beatles remastered catalog coming in September, the powers that be are sure to shut down most of YT's posted Beatles videos. It's a shame really. It's not like fans won't buy them just because there here.
Fuckin' corporate morons!

Seriously, YT is the best free advertising ever, I don't get why they have to take the videos down.

Yeah,poor Paulie is nervous! lol

I think their haircuts were influenced by the Three Stooges' Moe Howard.
Jaybird1103 2 years ago
No Jaybird, the haircuts came from a German girl named Astrid Kercherr who cut their hair for them in 1962 during their stay in Hamburg-Stu Sutcliffe, the Beatles bassist at the time who was no good but a great pal of John's fell in love and married Astrid-It was she who introduced the hair styles to the Beatles-John was the last to accept it-

wasnt paul the bassist tho
