When the 3 nights at Wembley took place, the album had sold less than a million. Months after the concerts, the album went to sell 14 million. So Rick did make the money back from sales after.
@TheOwl Punk was marketing too - all you gotta do is pay attention. It's no different than In Sync. Johnny was a tool and look what happened. Wakeman was his own man!
what's the matter with prog? Greg lake was pilloried for having one persian carpet, the Sterophonices have three!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wake up. Spinal Tap covers Sex Pistols revivals as well. Also, Hawkwind and the Space Ritual - space travellers? What;s the difference between that and Prog's fantsasies? The difference is vindictive journalists, that;s what the difference is.
I think it funny. I was listening to a DJ in Virginia Beach, VA not long ago, and he was saying that it was Wakeman's birthday. He went on to say that after leaving YES, Wakeman embarked on a solo tour, which never really got off the ground. I don't know where that DJ got his stats from, but with over a dozen solo albums to his credit (or is it more than that), I would definately say that Wakeman has been a most successful solo artist.
I'm afraid I agree with the "this is atrocious" crowd. There were really good things done in the genre. There was also an industry and when bands weren't doing things like Brain Salad Surgery or Close to the Edge, they still had to eat.
I even dig the Six Wives excerpt from Yessongs, but selling out Wembley for this pretentious crap is WAY over the top.

Let me elaborate: when people who weren't there want to know why the 70s SUCKED so much--I was there and I know--this will be the perfect video to show them. People who think SPINAL TAP was some sort of joke will see that it really can't compete with the true level of dumb awfulness that permeated pop music culture of the time. It's why punk rock was so necessary, to cleanse away the garbage.
Excuse me but The Eagles, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Bad Company, The Doobie Brothers, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Genesis, Queen and the list goes on and on.
You were clearly in prison in the 70's or should have been cuz what you are saying is criminal!!!!!!!!!!!!! The 70's ROCKED!

This is why punk happened!

Punk was just a sort of back to basics rock and roll. Johnny Rotten was the John Major of Rock, really.
CharlesDickens99 2 years ago
Punk "happened" because musicians stopped caring about the quality of their performance. You could never same the same about Rick Wakeman.

I managed to fool my friend into believing that Bruce Dickinson played with Wakeman before joining Iron Maiden. The other singer does look like him.

He should of spent the couple hundred extra pounds for the real skating horses! Still pretty over the top, in a good way.

Dudee! There's no audio of the Minimoog on the left! In this (original) version, Wakeman played a double solo using two Minimoogs at the same time.

Actually this is really very good. Even if you don't like it, it contibutes to prog rock´s own demise at the hands of punk so everyone wins.

Minor quibble I admit but.... Eagles? Doobies? Queen? Are you covertly posting to support Robert101455's statement?
I'd pay to avoid any & all of those three ;-)
And, well, how to put it?
The rest are 60s bands originally except Bad Company....
.... who were 50% (at one point 75%)the 60s band Free, plus players from Mott the Hoople & 'Crimson!
Mind you, *they* were good enough to support the pro-70s argument alone.
