  • Their sound was so powerful and overwhelming in the 1980s. Too bad they had to go all mellow in the mid 1990s.

  • I would venture to say that Mike Mills is the best backing vocalist of all time.

  • What is that little piece of a song he sings at the beggining?

  • @JPNakashima133: It's a bit from the old TV commercial for the US ARMY. They used to advertise for people to enlist in the armed forces.

  • Michael Stipe = Best frontman of all time. Fact.

  • Just remembered they started the concert with Get Up. Green tour was the best. The drums at begining of this song. Machine gun....brilliant energy.

  • Fuckin Brilliant! Saw them on the OC tour in Columbia SC. Was stationed in Charleston SC. Drove up when the broke into the song the place ERUPTED! Ya not a brainwashed Sailor!

  • fuck you stipe. loser liberal from 1987. this country keeps you save. enjoy your 10 million retirement while you pretend to save the whale and do nada looser.

  • awesome!

  • Today I read that R.E.M does not exist anymore.

After finding this video of the 1989 Pinkpop concert, where I was in the audience, I experienced the very same emotional impact as I did that night.

  • lmao hes mad nice this niggas nice

  • Michael Stipe with hair?! Dang man, looks awesome with it!

  • They should have never left this off Tourfilm. They did this song each night with this much energy and they left it off Tourfilm.

  • Best song on the album.

  • Michael Stipe dances as if he's been struck by the Holy Ghost lol

  • thawt this wa l8r than 89??

  • @iamblackismful Coming from someone who thinks Three Days Grace is 'real' music...

  • Digging the spinning backfist at the beginning. Wonder if Mike is a MMA fan?

  • Fantanstic! Sends shivers down mine spine. Wow.

  • Elton john on bass.

  • The sound is great it sounds like a war battle at the beginning.

  • This rips me baaaaadly I'm still in two parts.... bloody awesome!!!!!

  • That was fantastic...

  • greeeat! :D Bill Berry is on drums! REM's always great at live + that dance ))

  • REM got me through being a teenager, sometimes cliches are true.

  • its 1989, what do you expect?

HD in dolby digital surround sound?

  • Indeed. Fucktastic sound quality.

  • @budbadbig i tottally agree sound quality is awesome, also the word "fucktastic" should be introduced into the dictionary lol

  • fantstic sound quality!

  • haha look at wee Stripey go, reminds me of my mate Koofy he's barking mad and loves swearing at my mates parents when he's been drinking whisky, do any of you know him?

  • CVC111 is lier :D

  • Comment removed

  • Nope, I really was there :)

  • I was there :)

  • I like the intro a lot. I've seen all these veterans for 20 years in L.A. and S.F. Look what the army has done for them.

  • Great intro~~!!!

  • That intro is a bit grating, and I forgot how goofy looking Michael Stipe is. But a great song and a good performance of it.

  • Oh dear Mike Mills' glasses fell off.

  • youre all idiots. whats the point of living, fuck society

  • i luv this song the audio on this moving is a little off but the song is great

  • Fucken great!!!!!!!!

  • I love Stipe's intensity in this performance. He's like this wonderful geek messiah who's been stripped of all inhibition and given his body and soul entirely to the music.

  • @Booga2006 geek?

  • I was once told this song was about agent orange use in vietnam, but i have read on a REM cd sleeve that they dont know what this song is about? I believe the 'nam/agent orange line

  • Apparently the Agent Orange thing is true. Look up "Peter Buck Interview 1989." There's one point in the interview where Peter talks about the song, and he mentions Vietnam and Agent Orange or something like that.

I think Michael Stipe has also said the song was based off of stories about Vietnam that he heard from his father, who is apparently a veteran. But I could be wrong.

  • no idiot agent orange was a chemical weapon along the lines of mustard gas

  • i know what agent orange is my grandpa has suffered severe health problems because of it. agent orange was banned after the vietnam war in the 60's. this song was written in the 80's its about orange crush the weed. also agent orange is NOT like mustard gas its a highly effective and harmful herbicide that was used to clear jungle brush to expose the hidden viet cong. dont even try

  • no it's your mom's name.

  • Is he singing about weed?

  • "Follow me, don't follow me

I've got my spine, I've got my orange crush

    Collar me, don't collar me

I've got my spine, I've got my orange crush

We are agents of the free

I've had my fun and now its time to

    Serve your conscience overseas"

It's about a soldier in Vietnam

  • asking for a date cock sucker?

  • Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the ultra douchebag of the year DurBanPoison420uh (also recipient of the slobbery cocksucker of the year 2009 and ass pumper of the year 2009 - need we mention he does gay for pay?)

  • Shit...I'm pissed I can't see the reply! Anyway...LOL! This is a great vid.

  • People like you need to go.

  • No, but you can kill yourself and save everyone the trouble you ultra douchebag of the year.

  • There is nothing you can do with that poor excuse for a troll.

Ignore him and don't give him the satisfaction of angering people thats a form of him being dead.

  • It's actually about Agent Orange.

  • that is some cool dancing

  • I love you Michael, now and for ever!

  • The best Orange Crush live I think... thank you very much !

  • I agree! Best version in my opinion.

  • really cuz rockband likes to have the singer say and another one come on the waves tonight

  • I was in front of this gig, about 60.000 people ore so,don't no for sure, but what i remember .. the hole hugh large feeld was almost shaking when this song started,REM on her TOP,thanks for share!

  • keine worte können das beschreiben

  • i wish i could dance like that!

  • Back when some skinny white guy mumbling cryptic lyrics and writhing on stage might have changed the world...

  • the megaphone part gives me thrills ^^

  • that is the best performance ive seen until now, rockin band

  • High on the roof thin the blood .????? Comin' in yovr home

  • the third line is "another one on the waves tonight"

  • what is that he says in the megaphone

  • Stipe's so unique.

  • the Gord Downie of the States lol

    REM rules

  • good band

  • Saw REM in 1987 for the first time...AWESOME. Can't listen to anything of theirs post-1989. :(

  • True. Their only good major label album was the first one. Out of Time was disappointing, Automatic was maybe a bit better, but still not like the IRS days, Monster was AWFUL; at that point I quit listening and haven't heard anything since to make me change my mind and tune back in. This stuff on Youtube brings back the glory days, though.

  • Mike Mills is the best!

  • yes he is! Whoever says he isnt is a fag!

  • r they in the US right now

  • no, they're currently touring europe

  • this is probably their best audition ever.

  • saw REM live last night and they played this, fantastic!

  • You have no idea how fucking jealous I am of you.

  • lol, i saw them on saturday, they played this also, it was amazing.

  • awesome song! the bass player looks awesome!!!!!!!

  • Mike Mills is the shit.

  • like fuck it hey???????????????????

  • Heh. I'm in first row here.

  • i'm jealous like hell

    i wasn't even born in '89 though

  • omg this is amazing

  • In time of war nothing makes sense including dropping the government experimental agent orange to eliminate the enemy as well as to loose a few good american soldiers to fight for someones cause

  • this song is about Orange Crush, the pop. whats wrong with you people LOL

  • ... what?

  • thats fucked man

  • BEST...INTRO...EVER

  • that is gold.

  • i like this song i sing or play guitar on the rock band game

  • Awesome version, when REM really did rock! Bill Gates on bass, wtf? :P

  • Hahahaha I know right?

  • best live concert i ever saw

  • Well actually I agree with this song but some of there others I don't. Sorry to make a confusion. Yes use of agent orange was wrong.

  • here i discoverd R.E.M. so sweet memories!!!!

  • best live act ever...

  • dang, stype is acting crazy on the stage here!

  • gotta love R.E.M

  • Michael jest wspaniały! Cały zespół przez niemal 30 lat utrzymuje się na wysokim poziomie. Nic nie stracili ze swego uroku - im starsi, tym lepsi:)

  • what great energy Michael is showing here

  • I dont agree with some of the bands politics but the music is so amazing i dont care. And its uncanny how close this song sounds to the original recording. I would go see them next week but i found out i had to get my wisdom teeth pulled the day of the concert =(

  • well, considering this is R.E.M.'s most political song, I take it you, what, support the use of Agent Orange? In other words, how could you disagree with THIS song (since your comment about not agreeing with the band's politics is posted HERE and not, say, on a clip of Nightswimming) and still have a conscience, or a sense of ethics?

How bout trying some Agent Orange on yourself first and then get back to us about what you agree or disagree about.

  • screw that, just go to the concert, you can see the dentist some other time

  • wow

  • Stipe with HAIR! woot!

Yeah, he had a lot more zest in his step when he was younger, for sure lol. BAD ASS!

  • so great song

  • I wish I had stipe's energy

  • i wish i had Stipe's voice!!!!!

  • lol, touche

If I were a guy I would totally want his voice.

heck I'm a girl and I still want his voice. lol

  • i totally agree, i mean, this is almost 20 yrs ago, seeing this and his performance at dublin on their live dvd shows he just has soooo much energy

  • i wish i WAS stipe!

  • only he can make a spin like that AWESOME!

  • fuck you both

  • you think R.E.M are stupid? id like to see what music you listen to

  • One thing's for sure, the effects of "Orange Crush" in Vietnam were tragic and senseless and there is a depth and message to REM lyrics.

  • *Byrne

  • The white suit is very David Brne-esque. Great performance of the song, looking forward to seeing them live in August!

  • twickenham stadium? 30th? im gona be there as well!!!

  • looks like Mills lost his glasses during that one

  • When i saw them on this tour Michael started Orange Crush by playing a drum roll on the back of a metal folding chair while glaring at us through his mascara. It was cool.

  • He visto las interpretaciones más recientes y no tienen comparación con esta. Sin duda, R.E.M. en su apogeo.

  • christ, stipe's going mentil!!

  • more videos from this concert would be great. this performance ranks up there with one I saw by Patti Labelle, and one other about 25 years ago by anthony newley, both on television. electrifying.

  • porco dio che versione..spacca l'anima!!!!

    great,thanks for posting

  • best live performace of any song ever?

  • Whilst this is a powerful politicallly outstanding performance, its just ousted by Tony WILSON intrducing The Sex Pistols [live 1st time ever] on British TV. I think Michael Stipe would agree.

  • Man they were a terrifyingly good live band, wish I could have seen them back then. They're still great, but not like this.

  • Too true, then again if Stipe danced like that now he'd probably dislocate something

  • lol! but it would be worth it! :P

  • Just splendid, beautiful, uncredible! This song is a must of rock's music. I love it.

  • The song is about Veitnam, so Stipe probs acted like that for a reason.

  • PERFECTTTTT

    REM RLZ

  • Did anyone notice Mike loses his glasses? They disappear around the instrumental break. I didn't notice 'til the very end because keeps playing like nothing happened. That's control. I'd be freakin' out.

  • i was just going to say that

  • Michael Stipe with a lot of hair! I'm sure a lot of people will agree with me when I say that R.E.M. are an amazing band and although they aren't as famous here in the U.K. (people here only know "Losing My Religion" and "Shiny Happy People," I'm sure they have had a subconscious influence on people here. By the way, loving the dance at the start!

  • great vid, his megaphone pisses me off tho kinda cheesy

  • i love to watch how they've changed thru the years. Just get better with time.

  • I remember this tour.**ckin' incredible!

  • Fuck!!! That's great!! Didnt see this performance yet. Its even better than the one on Tourfilm. Very energetic!

  • I don't know why but I love the sharp sound quality on this video. And the black border.

Great song, and Michael Stipe is a legend.

Buck's solo is not quite clear is it?

    Lovin' Mike's dance.

  • I've watched this clip a gazillion times and it never gets old, or tiring. I always feel better when I watch this clip. No band can ever top this, really! Can't wait for their upcoming album! ^__^
