I've seen both sides of the debate on whether Cochlear Implants should be inplanted in children. From a Deaf persons' point of view,they feel that it is an attack on their culture and way of life. On the other hand,does deaf culture have a right to force society to pay a so called disabled deaf person (SSI) government assistance for their entire natural life? Since Deaf people tend to gravitate to other Deaf people. There will be more Deaf people in the future.

Not all deaf could benefit from the CI. You are really taking a gamble with the CI. I was warned it is a 50-50 chance. 50% chance it will work and a 50% chance I would lose the remainder of my hearing. With odds like that, I am not about to gamble it. Are you ashamed of your deaf hertitage? 62% unemployed. How many of these are unemployed because they don't want to work? How many of them are collecting SSI or SSDI? When are you getting the CI? And lastly, why alter what God gave you?
I am glad my parents asked me when I was 12 years old to let my decision and I said no then I joined Deaf School in my Sophomore year and I learned alot on Deaf Culture...very interesting facts about them against CI.

After I had to move other town to attend college and the managers wanted me to come back and work with them again.
I am totally against CI...my future wife have one but she's not happy with it. She always want to swim deep but she can't because of CI. She want to touch something is shocked like shock game, shocking pen, etc. from Spencer but she can't because of CI. She got it when she was 4 years old...by hearing parents which doctor offered.
I used to work at 2 different places of Denny's Restaurant...one in Portland and one in Pendleton, Oregon. Both managers were afraid to hire me and I told them that I would use papers and pen to communication also sometimes I can read lips, I always use my eyes movement quickly to see anything happens like someone get hurt and I noticed it first before hearing people hear someone. So they decided to hire me to see how I was doing and I did awesome job and they were very impressed with that.
Gosh, I am tired of hearing those CI stories. I want it to be stop! Myself is deaf and PROUD of it. I understand that most deafies are trying to find jobs but the places they applied at always rejected us not let us to have jobs because of our "deafness" and they are afraid to communication with us.
I am appalled that CI is so controversial! The fact is, deafness is a handicap. Is a CI any different from a child with no legs to use a prosthetic? Should we not allow children to use any type of prosthetic because it is interfering with "nature"? I think deaf people should be "proud" of being deaf, but I also thing that it is a parent's right to help their deaf children be people that have more options. If it was not a disability, then a doctor would not need to hire an interpreter for their deaf patients (the ADA act)....and deaf people would not qualify for SSDI.
