God that guy controlling the vertical spinning bladed bot needs to practice driving that thing or come up with a more controllable design. It looked like that bot was dealing more damage to itself then its opponent. At least the integrity of that machine is strong, everything mounted nice and tight. So nothing important comes loose and disables the blade of the drive or the receiver for the remote.

The spinner in this is mine. My robot is Last Rites, and the wedge here is LNW. These are 220 pound heavyweight class robots. The weapon is powerful, enough to toss around heavyweight class bots, but trust me, these are not small.

Actually, these competitions have been around for a while. Robot Wars simply made a tv show from it.

Robot Wars was the first to come out. Every thing eles was a spin off of robot wars.

actually robot wars came out in the states first. I don't think it was televised but some guys from the BBC saw it and brought it back to the UK, it achieved a great deal of success there and after a while it spilled into the American mainstream from Robot Wars UK and Robot Wars Extreme. I don't think RW or Battlebots are televised ANYWHERE anymore, though, so it's all for moot.

Hoplasa a hybrid wedge/hammer is quite difficult to do, even if quite perfect.

Actually wedges are quite useful, and are more of the cunning type, but I prefer to have a lethal weapon with it (Minion style). The weapon comes handy when you face a srimech bot or worse, an invertible bot.

By the way this wedge was VERY impressive ramming a hs head on. But I suppose the wedge is frint armored.

Wedgebots are difficult to attack, and generally more mobile that weapon-based bots. IMHO, wedgebots should be banned as they are no fun to watch... :P I like to see sparks and bot-parts flying around.

Wedgebots are just as dangerous as any bot with a blade, knife, or flamethrower. They require a different kind of mentality to drive because instead of going in with the simple intention of "smack anything that moves with my weapon", you need to be tactical and survivalistic as you're just an incline plain on wheels.

I'd rather see a cunning wedge/flipper immobilize then a big bladebot making metal julienne fries because having your opponent tip you over and force you out of a match while you could still theoretically fight is just embarrassing to watch.

That and they're easy to design and build.

They sure make one hell of a boring match though. It's like the equivalent of an MMA grappling match: it's technically impressive, but people like to see the blood/sparks fly. For every cool match where, say, a robot with a latex doll's head gets it ripped off and blowtorched, we get 5 boring-ass ramming competitions between doorstops. Technically, it's the way to go, but this is supposed to be entertaining, and wedge-flippers just don't cut it. Literally.

I'm not saying that they would never make for a boring match, because they sure can cause a stinker if you don't utilize them right. Hell, wedges aren't even my favourite bot type. (That goes to Blenderbots)

Still, I defend the wedgebot simply because they go into a gunfight with a slight incline... every fight.

Last Rites vs LNW.

Last Rites is the spinner and LNW is the silver wedge. LNW normally has a vertical spinner but removed it for this fight so they could add more armour.

LNW won that fight.

Mostly correct - LNW lost the fight. Although LNW was winning most of the way through the fight, at the end one of the hits from Last Rites locked up one side of the drivetrain, and he was basically a sitting duck. LNW tapped out at that point.

I never got the robots that use the wedge style as their weapon. This movie shows that some robots perform the same on either side.

Wedges do work. Some creators though know to build around such an obstacle.
