@ horshodg....please tell me wat is meant by Abhashwaram?....personally i liked this rendition par excellence.....i am a singer myself and have sung this song in live concerts as per the Pt.Ajit KAdkade Version......Arunaji has a different rendiition style and her forte.....its bliss to listen the song in a very different style....though her voice sounds exerted due to prolonged singing may be......
@ mgnanamani: at 2.57, it is not exactly abaswaram, but i think her "perattal" or voice modulation slipped a little bit making it sound a little bit off, but I could be wrong.
Many of my Marathi friends heard this and did not feel that the diction was terrible. even if it was- so what? It sounds beautiful and can any one tell me how many Marathi singers sing in Tamill, Kannada or Telugu. She sings in all these languages and also in Sanskrit. Thanks to Carnatic musicians we get to hear different styles of singing and appreciate our diverse culture
Aruna is absolutely amazing! She is the first woman Carnatic singer that lets her body free when she sings! Usually performances are very sullen, but she is letting loose. Not all Carnatic music has to be portrayed as sullen and dower for it to be considered holy or pensive. Who decided that anyway, and why do Carnatic goers believe it? Yay, Aruna!
I think also, there is a lot of male chauvinism. Males singers are seemingly given a pass for all kinds of facial contortions and actions that are considered unbecoming for women. As if its somehow inferior for women to enjoy the music they are immersed in.
Agreed, I always thought such nice singing needs to be appreciated. In the north if someone say wah or kya baat hae it really inspires the performer. Why is this sort of appreciation lacking in Carnatic music.?
u r right may be it is abhaswaram....but think this song is a thukkada sung after 2.5 hours in the concert...after magnificient alapana...singer would definetely be tired.....so it shd be fine :-)
Buy Charsur CD of Aruna Amma (2005 Live Concert at Parthasarathy Swami Sabha). In that she had sund brindavani (same thukkada after 2.5 hrs only), but the brigas she gave was amazing with full energy...I went for the concert and bought the CD as well....
The talented artist has demonstrated the versatility of Karnataka Classical music founded by Sri Purandara Daasa to incorporate other forms of music. Thanks for posting.
nice clip thks ;if you can read tamil read thukaram biography by balakumaran so moving
during sarabhoji raja perhaps these came down to south; nice the sindians sing all languages; one day may come when you can hear oothhukadu and tyagaraja swatitirunal in sitar
great work. Thanks for posting v. good clippings. Abhangs are mostly in Marati and Sant Tukkaram has done 40 crores of them and the lord came down in his chariot and took the Sant in the same body. One of the fe who went to Swami with the human body beacause of his abhungs and Sant refused go with the lord saying that he can not do more. We miss many as these abhangs and the current singers are rare. They are divine bliss.
In Tamilnadu Sri.Tukharam Ganapati sings Abhangs in Varkari sampradaya. He has dedicated himself to spread the Namasankirtan movement. His satsangs are very good as he also explains the meanings.
Abhangs were popularised by Sant Tukaram, Namdev, Gynashwer, among others. Abhangs are sung in the praise of Lord Panduranga Vithal and Rukmabhai, presiding deities of Pandharpur.
It is a musical form in Marathi and most frequently sung in Maharashtra. Abhangs have since crossed the national borders and sung in Carnatic music concerts as well.
The word Abhang represents "that which cannot be destroyed". It is synonymous to Namasankeerthanam in South India. Instruments like Pakawaj, Tabla, Tanpura and Taal play the supporting role for an Abhang-singer.
There are different styles of Abhangs. The most popular one is Varkari Sampradaya. Sant Tukaram and Sant Namdev's Abhang Gatha and Abhang Granth are some of the important texts of Varkari Sampradaya. The presiding deity is Panduraga Vithal.
Similarly, Sant Ramadas had composed Abhangs in South India. He was instrumental in spreading this to Tanjavur as Bhajan Padhathi Sampradaya. It is sung mostly in South India.
Splendid performance... FYI, this is ragam Abheri with a touch of Gowri Manohari in there and then going back to Abheri through Akaaram and then pallavi.
