It seems the ACLU is on the wrong side of this. Prop 8 doesn't impose anyone's morality on anybody. Gay couples still have their first amendment rights to publicly declare their commit to each other and to live together. They even have equality under the (state) law, because of the registered domestic partnership laws.
What prop 8. does is have the government impose the view that gay marriage is a good thing upon the people, and force private organizations to recognize that.

The difference between civil union and marriage is like a GED and High School Diploma. Technically, they're "equal", but we know they really aren't. Why do we have to add "marriage" after the word gay? Because it carries the connotations of that word, and is conducive to both legal and SOCIAL/CULTURAL equality.

The 14th amendment says "equality under the law". Social/cultural equality is not the business of the government. For the government to attempt impose social or cultural equality, they would have to significantly infringe on our civil liberties.
If gay marriage is considered to be legally equivalent to civil unions, then it's legal redundancy. Meaning the distinction between "marriage" and "civil union" would be completely arbitrary. The fact that civil unions and marriage are legally equivalent is an argument for gay marriage, not against it. Why does the government need to draw a completely arbitrary line between two legally identical labels?

The majority at one time were against interracial marriage and the right of African-Americans to vote, and Congress eventually that what was ruled in courts was unconstitutional. 40 years after Congress ruled that blacks and whites should be segregated in schools, they decided their previous ruling was unconstitutional and put civil rights at risk.
Just because the majority has voted, does not override the fact that the right of equality should be ignored.

It seems the ACLU is on the wrong side of this. Prop 8 doesn't impose anyone's morality on anybody. Gay couples still have their first amendment rights to publicly declare their commit to each other and to live together. They even have equality under the (state) law, because of the registered domestic partnership laws.
What prop 8. does is have the government impose the view that gay marriage is a good thing upon the people, and force private organizations to recognize that.

The difference between civil union and marriage is like a GED and High School Diploma. Technically, they're "equal", but we know they really aren't. Not imposing the view that "Gay marriage" is a "good thing", asking for gays to be allowed to marry is asking for gay marriage to be socially acceptable I.E. TOLERANCE. If straight couples can get married, why not gays? there's the issue of "separate but equal". Allowing gay marriage is about more than legal equality, it's about social acceptance. Saying gays are allowed to form civil unions but not get married is like saying that a homosexual relationship isn't "equal" to a straight one.

The fact that civil unions and marriage are legally equivalent is an argument for gay marriage, not against it. Although I don't agree with everything they do, i support the ACLU through a monthly donation. it would be impossible to find an organization that you support 100% of the time, so i suggest that if you agree with 80% of what an organization stands for, then you can say they strongly agree with your views. anyway, i believe the ACLU is doing very good work, and i encourage others here to help out as well. the ACLU stands for everyone's rights to freedom regardless of gender or background!

Sorry, marriage in this issue is a legal term, not a part of common language. Marriage comes with specific benefits, which cannot be attained by a same-sex couple. Giving same-sex couples the same right to marry as any one else allows them to receive the same benefits. This is what the issue is about, not about semantics.

Regarding my "original claim", that is only sourced by a medical program I had seen where scientists had manipulated the genetics of mice to turn homosexuality on and off repeatedly. Though I have no source citation, I did witness the events being tested.

Americans also believed that marriage should be kept between the same-race, with many believing that blacks were inferior to whites. Of course race and sexual orientation are two different things, but using the argument of "majority" does not mean supporting rights.

It's alive kja5, but I'm not so sure it's all that well. I think there is a shift, subtle though it may be, but a shift away from this mindset somewhat. There has always only been a small core of real haters - the rest just go along with the tide and the tide is moving away from the haters.

They are sending a message to the American people that justifys "ANYTHING" you do is okay as long as you are "Living Your Life As You See Fit"... and that means "ANYTHING"...

The majority at one time were against interracial marriage and the right of African-Americans to vote, and Congress eventually that what was ruled in courts was unconstitutional. 40 years after Congress ruled that blacks and whites should be segregated in schools, they decided their previous ruling was unconstitutional and put civil rights at risk.
Just because the majority has voted, does not override the fact that the right of equality should be ignored.

Let's not get off topic. There is a differeance between race and sexual orientation. This mans comment was to "Live Your Life As You See Fit". Am I wrong in what he said? What does that mean? Am I to believe that I am allowed to live my life which "Includes" voting as I see fit? If I lived my life as I see fit and voted for prop 8 is that living my life as I see fit? Or is it not living my life as the ACLU Sees as "Fit". Am I suppose to simply "Not Be Me"? Is that the message?

ACLU never stopped people from voting, or expressed that people should stop voting. "Live your life as you see fit" means that everyone, including homosexuals, should be allowed to live without judgment or the removal of their civil rights. Of course, I say that with caution. I would live as I see fit, as long as I don't take away other people's civil liberties.
The ACLU isn't asking for votes to be taken away. You're allowed to vote if you'd like. But they're encouraging equality for all.

What the ACLU wants to do is say "California Voters, you are wrong".
I want marriage equality to pass but not in a courtroom. We need to get it back on the ballot, talk with people and help them understand how wrong prop 8 is. The gay community needs to get out there on their own and win people over. They won me over and I was die hard for prop 8 at one time. If I can see the wrong than so can other California voters. The ACLU needs to stay out of this. It's not their fight.

We live in a nation where everyone preaches equality but not everyone wants to accept it. How will true equality ever be achieved when there are so many different Ideologys and who is to dictate which ideologies are the right ones? It should be the people of this nation and democracy but apparently that doesn't work if it is not in the best interest of one particular group. That to me is where I think the ACLU causes more harm than good.
