BlueBannana93 is right. There are several interviews with Groff and/or Lea in which they talk about how he went to L.A. when the shows were down during the strike, and Lea went to hang out w/him & met Ryan Murphy. I have no doubt that if they'd been around, they'd have been out there singing, too.

Lea and Jon weren't there because Jon was filming a pilot for Ryan Murphy in LA coincidentally at the time, and Lea took to opportunity to fly and and spend the week in LA with him - resulting in her meeting RM and him first telling her about Glee and a character hes writing who he has her in mind for.
