My favorite song of his! I remember being in high school and seeing this on MTV (possibly even on 120 Minutes) when it first came out. Then, a few years later live with Crowded House on MTV Unplugged.
I look up to Tim as one of the greatest songwriters of his generation and this is a beautiful song, no question about it. Unfortunately the late '80s production does it no favours and the hair looks like he's borrowed it from Michael Bolton. It says so much for Tim that the quality of the song shines through despite it.
Great song - always loved it. Heard him sing it live and it was amazing!!! However, the hairstyle going on around this time can never be forgiven!!!!!!
I saw the vid today for the first time in my life. Amazing, pure faith, hope. I got the record since 1990. I was always a big fan of crowded house and than I bought this Lp twenty years ago and it started to make me an artist. I was drawing the cover first..and than the strory continues....follow your dreams, I did it!
This video is exquisite... it so perfectly captures the mood of the song, and Tim's frame of mind around that time. God bless YouTube and the fans who take the time to post videos that might otherwise be lost and forgotten!
I woke up in the middle of the night remembering the line "When you're, nobody's baby" and had to find the song again. I was fortunate to meet Tim and 'Gretchin' as he called her. At the time I didn't actually know who she was and wondered why she had a kinda puzzled look on her face, a 'what about me' look. Love this song, the coat, the hair, the cane, the sea. Oh, and fridrixfanclub in the comments, I am a singer living in Albufeira Portugal and yeah, next to the sea. Have a great life ya'll
there should be a very best of tim finn.theres escapade, big canoe, tim finn ,before and after, even stuff from finn, split enz, crowded house woodface etc
I directed this video in January 1990 for Capitol Records. We shot the ocean scenes at El Matador Beach near Mailbu and the rest on a stage in L.A.. The jacket is Tim's. I believe he had just broken up with longtime flame, Greta Scaachi, and was very introspective during the shoot. The women executives on the set all commented on how fantastic he looked. The great hair and those piercing eyes that seemed incredibly electric in his close-ups. Fond memories. A great song and a great guy.
Yes Tim looks fantastic here (I hadn't seen him with long hair before!) and this is a beautiful video! Fabulous job, and thanks very much for providing all these details!
This song always kind of reminded me of being a lounge singer by the sea. Seeing the video for the first time, I'm pleased to see all the water. I love the feel of this album, this song in particular; it suits his voice so well.
First and only place I heard this song...on muzak. The folks at muzak sure have a knack at picking great songs that most media outlets ignore! Back when this song came out it was all FM subcarrier recievers!
This is another one of those beautiful and brilliant songs from Tim that just didn't get the recognition it deserved. Tim Finn has had a huge influence on my music.
I've never seen this video! This is my favorite solo Tim song. And my, doesn't he look GORGEOUS! Sigh...Whatta find! Thank you SOOOO much for posting this!
"When I came running to you I was following the light from a dead star!" Sheer poetry! Tim is surely one of the finest, most underrated songwriters ever to grace Rock!
Oh my gosh. This is my all time favorite Tim Finn song, and he looks so beautiful in this video I can't stand it. That long hair absolutely KILLS me. Boy he's beautiful.
you took the words right outta my mouth! I've always said Tim never looked more GORGEOUS than he did during this highly stressful period of his life. He had such thick, wavy, lush hair and it never looked better than it does in this video. He looks so..well, MAJESTIC walking along the ocean shore, as if he could command the very waves with his sheer presence! WHAT A GUY!!!
Tim is such a chameleon. Looking at, and listening to this, then to the ALT stuff later, then the songs with his brother, Neil, evoke such different responses. It's as if he's different people.

You can buy a copy of this song from iTunes. "Not Even Close" is from Tim Finn (album name), released in 1989.
If you, like me, do not want to give iTunes your credit card, you can buy gift-cards to redeem on-line.
