It is the job of the conductor to make sure the orchestra ARE in good form.If they do not know how to perform... get some people who can.I'm sure Beethoven would not make do with people who could not make a great contribution to this fantastic work.
In all likelihoods the early performances of this were under even scrappier orchestras. In the early 19th century this piece was considered difficult, today most orchestras can play it in their sleep.
@cromulus No. This are exactely Beethovens tempi! Carlos Kleiber's interpretation of the 5th symphony is not as good as the 4th symphony. There Kleiber and Furtwängler are best.
The "desteny" motive is no where worked out better than in Furtwängler's interpretations as different as they might be.
Indeed it is tragic to think that Furtwangler passed away more than half a century ago, he is timeless & conducts phenomenally with power, beauty, exelsity & fresh feelings this Masterwork of Beethoven S5!!
Ok, fine and original, but the ensemble problems are incredibly infantile and annoying. I don't understand this myth-making, there are many finer versions by less-feted conductors and orchestras.
@viandante It's an old recording, technologie was not fantastique like solti's Ring. And it is not for the estetic we like his interpretation, it's because he played like nobody can. How he play it like a Horror movie just fantastic. Karajan changed the orchestrations because he was not the height. Understand Furtwangler is difficult but we have to :P
Even the surprising use of the "AGC" (Automatic Gain Control) cant hide the power and beauty of this historical gem.
The AGC was used in primitive cassette recorders but I didnt knew that it was being employed as late as 1954. In the 1930s (and to avoid overload distortion or clipping) some type of peak reduction techniques were common.
Furtwangler seems to have a very personal connection to this piece- I hear a great urgency, joy and energy here missing from other conductor's performances.
Certainly does not exist. But what for then to spread video which is not present? It is possible to listen simply to music in the best sounding...Excellent records on quality, and more recently, were let out by firm "Melody
It's more than 50 years since he passed away, but he is still there now, playing The Fifth, which we could listen to thousand times, every time with fresh feelings. Thanks for th posting.
Nothing but perfect, makes me weep.

I agree...and they should have all been made to eat cheese triangles until they learnt the fundamentals of the music they were challenged to perform.

Too damned slow! Karajan's and Kleiber's interpretations are so much better.

I have been searching YouTube to hear more of the symphonies composed by Furtwangler himself. I have only heard his 4th symphony.

Это нахальство - выкладывать музыку без видео... Послущать я и так могу, причём, в гораздо лучшем качестве..

If you have a video of Furtwangler conducting this symphony that you want to offer up then do so and amaze me, but to my knowledge none exist.
