@44USELESS44 - That's the idea behind the "carbon fiber technology" that is being used in a lot of aircraft and things these days. They 'paint' on layers of carbon fibers and it becomes very strong, especially when the layers are different directions.

The large surface area of the inter-connected leaves of paper result in very high friction, and the more you pull, the more the perpendicular forces between the pages (it has the same effect as a chinese finger trap).

It is just a friction thing. The pages are pressed together, so a vacuum can't form as there is no space for an absence of air. When you have hundreds upon hundreds of pages not only pressing together but also pinched together, you have a great amount of force to overcome.
