Can really hear the Stravinsky influence here. Check out my original song tribute, "Here's To Alfred Hitchcock," where I reference "North By Northwest." Just click on my name below or search "CraigASilver."
WHAT THE FUCK! I was watching Batman: The Animated Series(Episode 4: The Last Laugh) and from the very beginning the music playing in the background seemed very familiar(and it kept on playing for most of the episode). I couldn't be sure until I checked and yes, it's pretty much just like the theme for North by Northwest.
The words "North Northwest" can actually be seen in the movie. In the scene where Cary Grant and Leo G. Carroll are walking on the tarmac to the plane look at the airline logos on the stairs in the background. The "Northwest" on one covers the "west" on the "Northwest" behind it and we see "North Northwest". Since the two are next to each other they are "by" each other which means we see "North" by "Northwest".
Cary Grant is a real man, why couldnt we stay in 50's where men always wore suits, walked on the right side of the sidewalk, and smoked liked a chimney
I'm going through the mother of all Alfred Hitchcock fazes right now! I've been watching every one of his movies starting with The Lodger! I have to say my favorites are Blackmail, Vertigo, and of course North By Northwest! I think I love North By Northwest for the music score almost as much as the movie itself! They are both so amazingly brilliant!
BH didn't compose the entire soundtrack music for N/NW. There are the obvious cues of old standards like "It's A Most Unusual Day" and "Rosalie." AND--there's a Chappell music library cue and another cue that was the theme for an old radio show called "The Unexpected." Can't locate the composers of those. But they aren't BH. That's not unusual to pickup cues from pop songs and libraries.
@AndyMarquisLIVE it was my right tone too, anytime my phone went off people would ask where it came from, and i'll have to restrain myself from slapping them, i changed it back to the good the bad and the ugly and people still don't know, assholes.
What about Sir Ian McKellan? Although he seems to be in everything these days i think his acting is superb (and he lives down my street!! Bumped into him on occasion!)
@vomitgorefromheaven Give him time. Look at Hitchcock's eighth film. "The Farmer's Wife." And don't tell me you've seen THAT one (confession: I have not). Nolan's is Inception. It wasn't until YEARS that Hitchcock became known for his suspense masterpieces. Imagine what Nolan will be like once he's reached Hitchcock's years in the business? I think it's safe to say that Christopher Nolan is Hitchcock's rightful successor.
@LSnicket4 You got a nice point, I didn't think about that. But personaly, I think that Chugyeogja is closer to what would a Hitchock successor's craft. Batman Begin's didn't pleased me at all, but I was 11 years old when I saw it, so maybe I would change if I see it again. Dark Knight is good, but it didn't impress me, neither did inception...But ok, as I said before, I did't think from your point of view, so I will give him time. Yet, as far as I know, Chugyeogja was the first Hon-Jin's movie.
@klepto126 But why are you saying that Park movies are'nt intelligent and original? They are not just beautifully build aesthicaly, but also beautifully written. Im a Cyborg, But Thats Ok is plainly one of the most interesting pieces of today's cinema IMO, so are Oldboy, Mr/Lady vegeance and Cut. Nolan's movies are much more commercial, and IMO they are good but unipressive.
@vomitgorefromheaven The gore in his movies are what turn me off to them. I see gore in movies as an easy, cheap way to make audiences feel uncomfortable and freak them out. What is the audience feeling suspence about, the movie itself or the next time the protagonist rips some guys tooth out?
@klepto126 There is no graphic violence in Lady Vegeance as far I remember, neither in Joint Security Area and Im a Cyborg but Thats Ok, wich is a romantic movie. And I believe the audiences of his movies usualy feel suspense by the well constructed plots with twists as intelligent as hollywodian movies will never be. And please, don't you think I putting Nolan in this hollywoodian cartegory. I like Nolan. But I personally dont believe his movies are as original as many say so.
@vomitgorefromheaven I don't think it's an insult to Hitchcock; he did extraordinary things with film. Imagine if he had the tools of modern filmmakers.
Anyone that loves Bernard Hermann will appreciate this: YouTube search for Blue Devils Methods of Madness. The first video is the audio from their brilliant 2000 rendition of this and other favorites like Taxi Driver, Scene d Amour from Vertigo, and Psycho...
This is absolutely mind blowing crazyness. Bernard Hermann was the greatest giant ever to roam the movie theatres! A true genious master! A mad man with a orchestra, on a mission to tear down all the musician, by insain music writings of pure instrument breakdown. This is rebellios anarchy at is absolutely best! Herman is the Elvis of the silver screens musicians.
I'm still reeling since i saw the RTE concert orchestra perform Music to be Murdered by , hermann's repertoire last week in the national concert hall . They opened with this theme followed by vertigo, psycho, taxi driver, I can't express how amazing it felt to see an orchestra play all those pieces right in front of me. Here's to Bernard Hermann and Alfred Hitchcock what a pair of visionary legends
James Mason and Grant were basically the whole show. I think Alfred could have done better than eva Marie Saint. Otherwise, a superior movie in every respect.
Cary Grant is probably one of the best, No not probably, IS one of the best. He ranked second best actor of all time on AFI's 100 best actors. This song and Mind Hiest are on par as greatest movie theme songs (gonna find some more but right now those are my favourite)
Bernard Herrmann was indeed a musical genius!! One the best composers of his, or any, age...And *North By Northwest* is definitely one of his very best, a masterpiece!
Yes, this song voiced many things about the secrets that Roger Thornhill kept secretive! It's a really profound story that it has, especially during a time like that. Cary Grant is also a fantastic actor, I can't acknowledge that enough. His interactions with the villains and agents are priceless.
Just saw this for the first time, i enjoyed it but i thought Rear Window was much better =/ I thought it was a little over rated, but still a good movie.
That's not to say I don't love Herrmann. The guy really was a musical genius and whatever influence he was on Elfman was a great thing. Elfman is a talent composer in his own right and doesn't deserve to be ragged on, especially when he is openly a fan.
.superior score. Truley, only the master himself, Hitchcock, could have orchestrated such a phenominal flick. Probably inspired the Bond movies, and all the derivitives that ensued. What a boone to my childhood! I saw most of his movies first run. Where do we go from here?
Also Meryl Streep, Kenneth Branagh (though he's not good at that "humble" thing, and Kevin Kline. Oh, and Dustin Hoffmann, Julie Andrews, Daniel Day Lewis, Philip Seymour Hoffman (is this the "Hoffman" you were referring to?), and Cate Blanchett. When you add them to DiCaprio, De Niro, Nicholson, Winslet, Fiennes, Depp, Caine, Swinton, and Norton, it is indeed clear we live in an impoverished age of acting.
This stamemnt is both dumb and factually inaccurate. Glass made his name with "Einstein on the Beach" and "Music in Twelve" parts - works that are about as far removed from Herrmann as you can get. If you think that he "stole" Herrmann's style, the you probably know nothing about either composer.
Also, what millions? Glass used to drive cabs even after Einstein and now he constantly tours the world. He is a man that didn't choose an easy way and deserves everything he achieved!
All the good actors are gone. Nowadays most actors only care about fame and looks, i think that Damon, DiCaprio, Pacino, De Niro, Hoffman, Nicholson, and Kate Winslet are the only good ones who are pretty humble and proffessional. RIP Cary Grant
It's not the actors who care about looks. It's the studios and producers. Remember, actors are chosen after an audition. By the way, Hitchcock, too, cared about looks. His actresses had to be perfect, blondes or otherwise.
I'd agree only on the stipulation that the audience has to realize how much the direction of filming and acting has gone since the time of, let's say "North by Northwest" The roles of both females and males have changed dramatically. Also the language, as well as the way we talk has changed as well.
It seems that celebrities are in the spotlight more because of social media networks. it's difficult not to see them every day and know everything about them.
@aBIGFOOTproduction Daniel Day Lewis and Sean Penn are also up there...there are some very good films out there but the amount of turgid rubbish that is put out by Hollywood these days seem to overshadow the few truly great films that it has released in the last few years.
