They only work on LOCAL calls in the US now where coins are still accepted as payment from THOSE type of phones. AT&T discontinued it's ACTS long distance service in about 2001ish, and since there is no other long distance provider that accepts coin payment you can't use this to redbox LD calls.
Hi, can you still buy these pocket dialers in the USA? I'd like to get some. I have the older ones with out the memories but I notice yours has some memory buttons on it. I'm also interested in getting some payphones sent over here to Australia for some displays using VoIP. .-.-.
i still have mine and it was great in the early 90s. i just found it in a desk drawer, the last one i made. looks like the one on the right. i can't get the memory stored. i forget how to program it again for a quarter,50 cents, or a dollar.
Ahh, the good old days. I put a tiny switch in my black dialer that split off one leg of the crystal. That way with the flip of the switch it could go from normal to modded.
Interesting history. I heard rumor that there are still phones around that it will work on. Of course, I had never actually seen a working redbox until today.
I used these to call from grocery store payphones to call home accross the states- It was great!

I remember those days! Awesome!

I had one of these too and it worked to make all sorts of calls around the world. Dangerous though. If you get caught your going to a federal prison.

was there any other use of these devices other than messing with pay phones?

what is this supposed to be used for?
nikidizzi 2 years ago
For calling for free. You "pay" with the signal, instead putting in money.

oh I see ok

Mine kept both crystals and used a mercury switch to toggle between red box and standard tone dialer, by flipping the unit upside down.

Oh man I used to have one of these. Wish I still did, not that I need it, but just for the historical value.

great old school stuff. I'm pretty sure it works somewhere in the world, a friend reported some really old COs and trunks are still in use in Alaska.
