Where are the girls like wendy? The soft of skin, the delicate ways and a voice of an angel. Gentle girls you'd fight for and dance waltzes in the rain. The kind of girl that holds your drunken, spinning head and soothes you quietly in her warm dark room. Where are those girls?
Prefab were a one hit wonder because Paddy wouldn't tour (he is shy). His brother took his songs to a record company. Anyway their albums were big hits.
When Loves Breaks Down made No. 25 in the UK, Cars and Girls made No.44, The Sound of Crying made No. 23, Life of Surprises made No. 24, A Prisoner of the Past made No. 30
@NolaMckenzie unlike most one hit wonders they wrote so many great songs. who cares about hits? have you heard the album "from langley park to memphis"? its fucking genius.
Oh to be 24, utterly defeated and living in a guest house in Northampton with nothing but alcohol, Radio One and music like this between you and oblivion.
It took me a while to get into Prefab, but this was the song that hooked me in. Within a few months i loved the whole Swoon album, and got every album after. Paddy is the Fred Astaire of words indeed. Very sorry to read in the Guardian interview with him a couple of weeks ago that he has had terrible tinitus over the last few years - probably the worst thing a musician can suffer from. Still, he seems positive and has a bunch of material up his sleeve.
I remember watching this at the time and the next day I went out and bought Swoon. What an amazing album, an amazing band and this is one of their best, if not their best ever song.
Wonderful... brings back memories of sitting in a little pub near the Elephant when this album first came out and hearing it on the jukebox. "Couldn't Bear to be Special" is a masterpiece.
This was by far their best album. When asked about it Paddy seems a little embarrased. True the production wasn't great, the songs were maybe naive and the band were all young. It's all the right ingredients for a perfect album. Fantastic.
I remember seeing this on the Tube too and thinking what a unique and special song. I went out the next day and bought Swoon. They made fantastic music, but for some reason they never had the success that they deserved.

Paddy has made a huge contribution to urban blues, definitely the Fred Astaire of words....

Its cruel to end so abruptly when after a minute I was just getting into it. What happened to the rest?

I was near the blind beggar and had a few friends down from the north when this was released.
No I wasn't, I was 3 years off being sent down - a legacy still to be lived down to this day just like all their songs....

A brillian song although video obviously produced on a very tight budget.
