@siddude The Vietnamese sailors did not fight. They were ordered to keep the flags flying at any cost and not to fire because the Chinese were looking for a reason for an all-out attack, but they didn't have it. Chinese sent in 40 heavily armed marines to face Viet troops and tried to take the Vietnamese flags down. They wrestled on the reefs. The Chinese marines shot and killed 1 Viet sailor who was unarmed holding Vietnam flag and stabbed 2 other sailors.

I am a Malaysia's Chinese, but I did not support China to use this kind of way to settle spratly islands problems. Like Vietnamese, I think some of the inslands are belong to SEA countries from the geography fact. Due to China owned a nuclear weapons, I don't think Vietnamese and other SEA contries are able to defeat China at the present. China has become a Big Bully in Asia, shame on you!

2) According to Geneva Accords 1954, French withdrawed troops from VN. VN was divided 2 countries; Paracel & Spartly islands belong to South Vietnam.
Chinese leader, Zhou Enlai, attended the Geneva Conference & signed the Accords 1954. If those islands belong to China, why didn't Zhou Enlai mention anything about China territory, but signed the Accords to accept S.Vietnam's sovereignty over those islands???
Because those islands did not belong to China before!

Because from 1956, S.Vietnam' began to invade china's inlands which were belong to Republic of China(Taiwan). At that time Chinese navy was so weak to stop S.Vietnam's navy. From 1960 to1967, 15 islands were taken. S. Vietnam's navy destroyed former signs which were build by Taiwan. From 1973 to 1974, another 6 islands were lost. In 1975, North part took over these inlands.
It is true that North Vietnam published maps which shows that they admit China has sovereignty over those islands.

I read the whole Geneva accords signed in JULY 20, 1954, This agreements mentioned the troops of both side evacuate from COSTAL ISLANDS of North and south. Please be carefull, the terms are COSTAL ISLANDS, obviously, the disputed islands is not located costally.

Reason was those ancient Vietnamese aren't Ethnic Chinese but like many other Ethnic that was conquered by Chinese, there were similarity. Old Vietnamese come from the South, hence why many Vietnamese words sound like Cantonese rather than Mandarin.
